Besides being a conference to set forth all the business of running an organization, it was also a time for fun and fellowship. Pamlico Sail & Power Squadron and the Fort Macon Power Squadron hosted one of the many hospitality suites. The theme was the great explorers and we chose Thor Heyerdahl as our explorer. We had wonderful creative talent from our members and the Pamlico Hula Dancers (Jean Shook, Joyce Colwell, Mary Jo Hatala, Donna Dunlap along with Cdr. Ken Mizell of the Fort Macon Squadron) were a smash! Donna and Mary Jo also provided some exquisite artwork, historical research, and wonderfully crafted models for our display. Our squadron came in second in the Best Squadron Yearbook Contest, thanks again to Donna Dunlap. P/C Don Dunlap was elected to the District Bridge as Administrative Officer and P/C Bob Hatala was elected as Assistant Educational Officer. My congratulations to both of them. Squadron Tasks. Our goals are to promote recreational boating through education and activities, as well as to promote the fellowship of our members. To accomplish what we have set out to do, we need your help. We have, in the membership, tremendous talent from all areas of expertise. I have listed below some of the committees that need volunteers. It is our squadron and you are the engine that provides the power. Please get in touch with one of the people listed below: Boating Activities Lt/C John Shook, P Teaching Courses Lt/C Chip Hayes, AP Summer Festival Lt/C Clif Heidel, P District Rendezvous for 2002 Lt/C Clif Heidel, P Cooperative Charting Lt/C Clif Heidel, P Membership Involvement Lt/C John Shook, P (Continued on Page 3) There is still time to attend the Cooperative Charting Workshop in Wilmington, NC. Look inside for the details!!!

Let s all welcome aboard the following new members: Bob & Virginia Jenks Morton Kotler Normandie Doar Jim & Frances Pressley Charles & Brenda Boklage Jay Butler John & Terri Hardtle As of the end of January, the Ship s Company includes: Regular Members 130 Woman s Cert. Holder 1 Family Members 21 Associate Members 8 Honorary Members 2 Total Membership 162 Executive Officer Lt/C Clif Heidel, P As they say, there is always the good news and the bad news. First, the good news. As I write this, three members have been certified as Vessel Safety Inspectors. They are: Ed Smith, Fred Schroeder, and Jon Tingelstad. My congratulations to these men and my thanks to P/C Ben Reed, AP for his efforts in our behalf. We hope to have three more certified by early summer. If you are interested in a safety inspection of your boat, contact either Ben Reed or me. The bad news. As you may know, Lt Jerry Hannon, P has left us. I will miss him dearly. Jerry was the Chairman of our Cooperative Charting Committee and the position is now open. COOP Charting is an important safety program within USPS. (Continued on Page 3) Education Thoughts Lt/C Chip Hayes, AP The Spring Boating Course will be finished when you read this. We had 21 students in the class. We hope that many members of the class will join the squadron. On 1 May, we will start a Boat Smart class which will be completed by the end of May. Since January, we have had several members complete classes (and I hope I have remembered everyone). They are: BJ Reckman Seamanship & Piloting John Capsavage Piloting Bud Crampton Piloting John Shook Piloting Mike Staples Piloting Allan Weaver Piloting Ed Mann Cruise Planning We currently have Seamanship, Advanced Piloting, Junior Navigation, and Navigation courses in progress. In the late summer there will be a Weather Course starting on 22 August. There are also plans for Seamanship and Piloting in the Fall. What courses do you want to take? Call me (Chip Hayes) and let me know. All things are possible (well, almost). I have also learned from members who attended the Governing Board meeting in Denver that prices for courses have changed. Now, the price includes the course and exams (to include grading Sight Folders). The increase, if any, will be relatively minor. Also, Instructor Qualification will be offered as a free course with funding provided by the USPS Educational Foundation. This may be the best time to take IQ! Page 2

3 April, 2001 Sound of the Pamlico, Vol. 3, No. 3 Commander s Message (continued from page 1) There are exciting boating activities planned for this year. These should be fun and give us a chance to get to know each other better. What Is Cooperative Charting? You can still learn about Cooperative Charting by attending the Co-Op Charting Workshop at the Cape Fear Community College, Wilmington, NC, on 19 May The workshop goes from 0800 to 1630 on Saturday. Special rates are available from the Howard Johnson Express Inn, 3901 Market St., Wilmington, NC. Their phone number is: There will be a Wine & Cheese Party on Friday night, before the workshop, at Grouper Nancy s at The cost of this is $7.00 per person. Send your check to: Jim Green, 1488 Trogen Place, Shallotte, NC At the workshop you will learn that we recommend corrections to several important government documents. The corrections we provide saves the federal government millions of dollars each year! We can make corrections to the U.S. Coast Pilot, Aeronautical Charts, and Nautical Charts. For those who have never outgrown the love of an Easter Egg Hunt, we can find and report on Geodetic Marks. Really, there is something for everyone in the Cooperative Charting Program. Is there anything else in the program for us? Well, we can deduct our expenses while doing Cooperative Charting from our taxes. For example, if we did a Cooperative Charting program this year to coincide with our Ocracoke Rendezvous, then we could deduct our food, fuel, and hotel expenses from our taxes. So, we have fun on the water while we do something worthwhile and we get a tax break! That is not a bad deal! If we attend the workshop in Wilmington, we can deduct our expenses from our taxes also. Anyone interested in making the Ocracoke Rendezvous into a Cooperative Charting event? We can check out the charts for the Pamlico Sound between here and Ocracoke and report on any changes to marina facilities that should be included in the U.S. Coast Pilot! We must not forget that teaching boating safety is our primary goal. One of the initiatives this year will be the introduction of America s Boating Course, which will debut this summer. The public will buy a CD or get on the Internet and study Boating Safety. We will then administer the exams. This can provide us with a wonderful source of new members. Education is still the cornerstone of USPS. It s fun to take courses and work our little gray cells. It is also rewarding to study, do some homework, and take an exam. Some of the courses are challenging and it is a source of pride to complete these courses. Everyone should take a class. Let s be involved! Commander Larry Colwell, JN Executive Officer (Continued from Page 2) To quote a recent copy of Boat/US Magazine, There are big hearted people in the world who adopt children, but many more who adopt pets, but it takes a special blend of devotion and tenacity to adopt a nautical chart. The adoptee is not warm and fuzzy and won t show any appreciation for all you ve done. Other than a small printed credit line, the only appreciation is knowing that the work you do could possibly prevent a boating accident some day. (Boat US, May 2001) We need that person to head up our Cooperative Charting Program. I know YOU are out there. Please give me a call. There is much good work to be done. Do You Like to Design Web Pages? If the answer is yes to that question you can help with our web page. Contact P/C Leon Gipson, P. who could use a hand with the PSPS web page and he KNOWS the web design business. You may contact him at most evenings. Page 3

4 April, 2001 Sound Sound of the of the Pamlico Pamlico, Vol. 3, No. 3 Pamlico Sail and Power Squadron USPS Dues Increase Treasurer Lt/C Ed Mann, AP For the first time in almost a decade, the United States Power Squadron voted for a dues increase at the recent Governing Board meeting in Denver. So, how bad will this be? Not bad at all! The dues will go up by the following amounts for the year beginning on 1 June Active Member $6.00 Additional Active Member $3.00 Family Member $1.50 Our squadron and District 27 are currently holding the line on local and district dues. PSPS will depend on continued growth for increased revenue. We certainly hope that all of our members will remain active with our squadron and send in their dues payment as soon as they receive the statement! Without you, there is no squadron. What is a District Meeting? As a new officer on the D/27 Bridge I would like to invite all our members to attend the District meetings. The next meeting will be held on 5 May 2001 at the Radisson Prince Charles Hotel in Fayetteville, NC. (And, as his wife, I can tell you that it is worth it to attend these meetings. I have had the chance to meet new people, learn more about regional and national activities, and have learned about what other squadrons do to address issues that we deal with all the time. It is a great idea factory, a chance to visit new places, and a nice mini-vacation!) Don & Donna Dunlap As the newsletter goes to press, we have a bank balance of $850 and we have no outstanding bills. You should be receiving your dues notice for the new year in early May. The Power Squadron year starts on 1 June and ends on 31 May. Payment will be due by 31 May For the first time since 1992 there will be an increase in the dues. (See USPS Dues Increase on this page) Administrative Officer Lt/C John Shook, P First and foremost, we need everyone to participate in some way to make our Power Squadron what it should be. We want it have a strong public boating educational center and be entertaining to members with many boating activities. Our Boating Activities Chairperson, Lt. Ansell MacMillan, AP, has developed the following 2001 boating activity schedule for this year with the activity coordinator volunteer: 12 May Washington Waterfront Rendezvous Ansell MacMillan May Dowery Creek Rendezvous John Shook June Ocracoke Rendezvous Don Dunlap July Bath Overnight with Dinner Out Ansell MacMillan August Washington Water Front Rendezvous Ansell MacMillan Sept Belhaven Rendezvous Karen Brown Oct South Creek Overnight Rendezvous John Shook Members are continuing to sign up for events and we are looking forward to some fun times on the water. If you are interested in doing any of the above events call the assigned coordinator. The coordinators are responsible for making the events happen. You will notice that Ansell and I are listed as coordinators of many events. We would like to have others share these duties. Call us if you are willing. (Continued on Page 5) Page 4

5 April, 2001 Sound of the Pamlico, Vol. 3, No. 3 Secretary Lt/C Joyce Colwell, AP Those of you who were able to attend our last meeting will remember that we decided to change the time of the meeting slightly. Our cocktail hour will begin at 1800 instead of 1830 and dinner will begin at The next meeting will be held on 24 May 2001 at the Washington Yacht & Country Club. Again, dinner will be $17.00 per person and includes setups. Those who are not members of WYCC can purchase beer or wine at the bar. Otherwise it is a BYOB (except for beer), Please mail your checks to me, made out to PSPS, by 18 May. If you are not able to get the check in the mail by the 18th then give me a call. Checks are not deposited until after the meeting, so if you find you cannot attend and let me know by 23 May, I will either return your check or destroy it. As you all know, we are obligated to pay for the dinners of those who cancel without giving us the required notice. For those who work late, or for some reason, would like to come to the meeting but cannot get there on time for dinner, please feel free to arrive after dinner. Let me know in advance, if possible, so that I can have a place for you to sit. Your check is your reservation. Mail to: Lt/C Joyce Colwell, AP, 127 Fairway Dr., Washington, NC For cancellations or late reservations call (252) Administrative Officer Report (Continued from Page 4) Again, we strongly encourage the full participation by members and their families. If someone has ideas for the kind of things to do as a group during any event, please contact the person who will coordinate the event. The Squadron is looking for a PA systems that can be donated for our use during meetings and other activities. If someone knows of any business or individual with a PA unit that they would like to donate to us, please call me (John Shook). We have scheduled some interesting speakers for the meetings this year. On 22 March, we had Mr. Bert Quay, Marine Surveyor and sometimes columnist for Coastal Cruising Magazine, make a presentation on blisters and deck delaminating. Our speaker for 24 May will be Captain John Longhill. John has made many exciting voyages in small sail boats across blue water. You don t want to miss his interesting presentation! And, some of his voyages have included members of your own squadron. On 20 Sept Mr. Claiborne Young, the author of many cruising guides, will be our guest speaker. On 15 November, Mr. Roger Allen, curator of the NC Maritime Museum in Beaufort and columnist for Coastal Cruising Magazine, will be our speaker. We Need You Let s Get Visible! Your Nominating Committee needs a few good members who are willing to serve on the squadron bridge for the coming year. The pay is terrible and the work is sometimes hard! But, we do need a volunteer or two to step up to the plate and indicate a willingness to serve. If you are interested in being an officer in PSPS, please contact on the following: P/C Harry Sakjas, SN D/Lt/C Don Dunlap, SN P/C Bob Hatala, SN Page 5

6 Pamlico Sail & Power Squadron Loses Charter Member The Pamlico Sail & Power Squadron has lost a good friend and dedicated member. Lt. Jerry Hannon, P, succumbed to cancer on 18 April. He retired to Washington four years ago and joined the USPS in Originally a member of the Tar River Squadron, Jerry worked with me at every function that we put on and won the Tar River Power Squadron Rookie of the Year award in Jerry attended all of the District 27 Meetings with me and worked on the Cooperative Charting Committee. Last year he transferred to the Pamlico Sail & Power Squadron as a Charter Member and one of the strong founders. Jerry continued to work for his new squadron and served as Cooperative Charting Chair and was a member of the Executive Committee. He will surely be missed by both squadrons. I will especially miss him as a long time friend and fellow boater.
