What I m doing on my summer vacation. Commander John Beardsley As summer approaches, we have a full schedule of events over the next several months. America s Boating Club s and the Coast Guard Auxiliary s missions overlap in several areas. Both organization s members enjoy boating and other active outdoor activities and both organizations promote boating safety. For many years the two organizations have been rivals, competing for the same constituency. Recently, the United States Power Squadrons and the Coast Guard Auxiliary signed a memo of understanding recognizing that both organizations have similar missions and agreeing to look for ways to work together, wherever possible. In the spirit of the memo of understanding, the Main Line Sail and Power Squadron invited members of the Coast Guard Auxiliary to our April dinner meeting at Peppers in King of Prussia. Several Auxiliary members attended the dinner and enjoyed the camaraderie of our Squadron and listened to the speaker, who spoke about Boathouse Row. All of the auxiliary members I spoke to at the dinner expressed the sentiment that we were a friendly group and it seemed like we liked to have fun. One asked about the possibility of taking part in our summer cruise, explaining that most of the time he logged on a boat with the Auxiliary was patrolling for boaters in trouble, not necessarily having fun on the boat. I think that his comments illustrate the theme come for the education, stay for the friends. Continued on Page 2

Gorge, JN* 16 Richard Lee Lane Phoenixville, PA H: Treasurer P/C Wayne Barrett, JN* 33 Park Ave. East Fallowfield, PA C: H: My summer vacation. continued from Page 1 On June 16 th, we plan to go canoeing/kayaking on the Schuylkill Canal and River. We will start at Fitzwater Station in Phoenixville at 2:00. We ll start by paddling north on the canal about 2 miles. From there, you portage your boat over to the Schuylkill River and paddle back down the river (with the current), before a final portage back to Fitzwater Station. If it s been a few years since you last paddled, do not worry. Paddling in the Canal is like paddling in a pool, and the portages are short and we will help each other out. The last leg is all with the current. The lightweight canoes and kayaks rent for $50/day for canoes, $40 for Kayaks. I m told it takes 2-3 hours to do the loop at a leisurely pace. If you happen to have your own canoe or kayak, they will let you launch from their property. At 5:00, we are going to have dinner on the deck at Fitzwater Station. So, even if you don t want to paddle, come for dinner. Reservations are not required, but the owner of the rental facility has asked that I give him a head count so that he can make sure he has enough boats for us and so he clears out enough space on his deck for our dinner. If you plan to attend, please let Frank Visich or me know, so we can relay the number of people expected to the restaurant and boat rental. If you haven t done so already, complete the Summer Cruise registration form and return it to Russ and Barb Jones. Mark your calendar for August 1 st. That is the day of the Commander s Picnic. Details are not complete yet, but reserve the date and plan to have fun. Our Veteran s Appreciation Event is scheduled for August 25 th at Skipjack Cove from 11:00-3:00. The veterans are all residents at the VA Hospital in Elsmere, Delaware. We ve been told more than once by their aides that many of them look forward all year to attending our picnic. The event is being catered again this year by the Skipjack Cove restaurant. Click here to find us on Facebook! Continued on Page 3!2 United States Power Squadrons, We are America s Boating Club

3 Executive Officer Lt/C Frank Visich Summer of fun-filled festivities As Memorial Day opened the summer season for 2018, I hope everyone is ready for fun-filled festivities with America s Boating Club! Patriots Days is each year for one weekend in June, several thousand Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Camp Fire, and other youth gather at the Daniel Boone Homestead near Reading, Pennsylvania. Each year campers enjoy a wide range of interesting and enjoyable events, activities, and attractions through the entire weekend. Our program includes demonstrations, skill games, a camp fire, a dance, competitions, local craftspeople, and tours of the Daniel Boone Homestead. This year Main Line Sail and Power Squadron are providing the VIRTUAL TRAINER for the scouts to use as a method of showing their skills in boating. We will be there for one day, Saturday, June 9, 2018 from 9 Am 3 Pm to show the scouts how to use as a training tool. Next will be the Summer Kick Off, June 16, 2018, at Port Providence Paddle, where they have Canoe, kayak and tube rentals (or bring your own). We will have dinner at Fitzwater Station Restaurant at 5:00 PM. See attached flyer on Page 12. Don t forget about the Summer Cruise this year from July 13-22, See attached flyer page for details. My summer vaca,on. con, nued from Page 2 This year, to offset increasing costs, we are asking members to contribute $10 to attend. As a bonus Skipjack Cove has agreed to give us use of their pool after the event, so bring your swimsuit. If it s at all possible, plan to attend some of the scheduled activities. Socializing is the glue that holds the squadron together. See you there. MLSPS thanks Clews & Strawbridge and Stoltzfus RV s and Marine for providing classroom space. 4 ! Education Officer P/C Nick Montalto, SN Safer boaters on the rise The Spring classes have been completed. Number of students completing courses were: America s Boating Course 54 Seamanship Class 11 Piloting 5 Russ Jones recently taught the Piloting class with Jim Heckman s and Dave Moretti s assistance. Thanks to Lance Parry, Gary Armstrong, Frank Visich and Dave Moretti as America s Boating Course teaching assistants. Frank Visich built a model to demonstrate boat light requirements, which we will enter in the Fall 2018 Teaching Aides competition. We collaborated with Pete Lacey, USCG Auxiliary, who participated by presenting classes on Lines and Knots and Marine Charts. Extending VSCs to paddle craft The USPS Safety Committee has begun a campaign asking Vessel Examiners to seek out canoe and kayak rental outlets for Vessel Safety Checks. This would be an excellent way to promote America's Boating Club. Recreational paddle craft establishments benefit from displaying the United States Coast Guard approved Vessel Safety Check decal on their rentals by making the public aware of their annual vessel safety check compliance. For paddle craft VSC inspection procedures and needed equipment, refer to form 7012A (forms.cgaux.org/archive/a7012a.pdf).!4 United States Power Squadrons, We are America s Boating Club

5 How can you not be having fun? Administrative Officer Lt/C Patty Pezely There is so much to do in the MLSPS, how can you not be having fun? I just completed the Piloting course. Now I know how to get back home if my GPS breaks. (On a boat, that is.) I was able to practice some of my newly found skills on an Educational Cruise on the Delaware River aboard the Ben Franklin Yacht. Main Line s R/C Bill McManimen, SN and P/DEO Jim Heckman, SN presented traditional and electronic methods of navigation. What a great way to celebrate Safe Boating Week. There were 2 added bonuses to this trip. One being, two of my Piloting classmates were able to join us and they joined MLSPS. Rich McLaughlin and Jim Mergen. Jim brought his lovely wife Nadine and his beautiful daughter, Winry. The second bonus was, we were able to see a few Tall Ships that came into town for the Sail Philadelphia Festival. As you will see throughout this edition of, we have several more events coming up this summer to include Kayaking, having fun with the Scouts and Veterans, the annual cruise, the commanders picnic and more. 7 Spring Conference 2018 Princess Royale Hotel Ocean City, MD A spring ritual for Main Line is to attend the District 5 Spring Conference. This was held the weekend of April 6-8. This meeting is primarily the Change of Watch for the District 5 bridge officers. It is also a time when USPS and D-5 information and ideas are discussed and exchanged. This is when several annual awards are given out for various achievements by the Squadrons and individuals. Main Line received the USPS Educational Fund Certificate of Merit for its annual contribution to the National Education Fund. Cdr. Beardsley also accepted the Distinguished Communicator award from D-5 for our fantastic newsletter, the Pilot. Meredith Barrett received her Life Membership award for 25 merit marks. However the best part of the weekend is the hospitality rooms on Friday evening. Several of the squadrons participate by coming up with ideas to keep the attendees entertained. Main Line has always had fun doing this. Our theme this year was a Casino night. Dressed as casino players and employees, our members provided four nautical games that guests could play. We had fun doing this and so did the others. It was a success a very good weekend. 11 April 2018 Don t let the sun slow you down Look in the sky! What s that big yellow thing? Oh, it s the SUN, bringing warmth, light, and the urge to get outdoors. With the impending arrival of nicer weather, we will soon be out in the yard or on the boat. This means higher sun angles and increased exposure to UV rays. Don t shoot for that perfect mid-summer tan in one day. All you ll do is get scorched and be unhappy for a week. Start getting in the habit of covering up with appropriate headgear, clothing, and sunblock. First thing to do is check the expiration date of the sunblock you saved from last summer s fun. If it s expired or getting close, replace it now. The UV blocking compounds degrade over time, and can be nearly worthless if you are more than a year past the expiration date. When you apply it, try to do so at least 30 minutes before going out so it has a chance to soak into your skin. Don t forget those often missed sensitive spots like under your nose, chin, and ears. Remember to reapply through the day, especially if you are sweating a lot. There is no waterproof sunscreen anymore, so it needs a booster to remain effective. Long-sleeved sun-blocking shirts are another option. They not only protect you from the UV, but may give just enough insulation on those cooler mornings we will have for a while yet. Don t forget to check those medication, ointment and sterile dressing expiration dates in your boat and home first-aid kits. Replace any meds over a year old or approaching the end of their shelf life. You never know when you might need it. 13 ! 2018 MLSPS Commander s Cruise Itinerary Our Main Line Sail and Power Squadron 2018 summer cruise itinerary is set. We estimate that between 15 and 20 boats will participate. If you would like to crew on a boat, let me know. If you are new to boating, we can team you with another similar boat. There will be many interesting activities on the cruise, all of which are optional. They include a beach party, a tour of Fort McHenry, dinner at several great restaurants, more than a few of our celebrated boat crawls, the infamous forward throttle award ceremony of course, and other interesting events still in development.
