Ed Dennis, S WEBMASTERS P/D/C Bill Miller, P 1st/L Kevin Kamrath Summer has past, and fall is upon us. At this time we watch beautiful Grand Lake turn from a vibrant green to brilliant colors of orange, red, and yellow. I am sure you will agree it is still lovely. There is no need to feel the fun is over. The activities of Grand Lake Sail and Power Squadron continue year round. It may not be on the lake, but the food, fun, and fellowship continues. The members of Grand Lake Sail and Power Squadron stay busy. Our first event for the fall season was our dinner meeting at Eagle s Landing. It was a huge success. It was decorated very festive, with delicious food and drinks! What a great turnout. After listening to our guest speaker, we might all agree, it is time to go fishing! Our members have an opportunity to reach out and make an impression for the Grove community. This will be at the Pelican Fest. The membership committee has made a new game, the Safety Wheel, to increase participation for all that come to Pelican Fest. The game is not only fun, but promotes boating safety, one of our main goals. Also at Pelican Fest will be the life jackets for the children and a sign up for our ABC class. This event could not be successful without the help of the many members of Grand Lake Sail and Power Squadron who give up their time to reach out to our community. At the same time, several of our members will be traveling to the District 30 conference. Here they will meet with other members of the District to learn what events they have been promoting. This meeting benefits all squadrons that attend. Many events are still in the planning for this fall for Grand Lake Sail and Power Squadron. As always, the events will have food, fun and fellowship with friends. Don t miss out on the fun. Scott Cox, P Commander, Grand Lake Sail and Power Squadron THE PELICAN EDITOR Lt. 7 7 By P/D/C Larry Stout SN-IN Before fueling the boat, mentally go through a checklist to be sure that you have done the following: Fuel in daylight, if possible. Tie your boat securely to the fuel dock. Put out all flames, such as cigarettes, pipes, lamps, galley stoves. Shut off engines and any electrical equipment that might create a spark, including blowers and radios. Close all windows, ports, doors and hatches. Have an operable fire extinguisher close by. Have crew and passengers not needed for fueling go ashore. When winterizing your boat don t neglect your batteries. If the boat is to be hauled and put in dry storage for the winter, remove the battery, clean the exterior and store it where you can periodically charge it. The cable terminals should be wiped with petroleum jelly or other nonmetallic grease to prevent corrosion. If the boat is to remain in the water, it is best to leave the battery in place to provide electrical power for all 12 volt systems such as the bilge pumps and alarms. Be sure the battery stays charged through the winter as a discharged battery can freeze, expand and explode spraying acid in the surrounding area. It is also important to not overcharge a battery in cold weather as it can damage a battery and shorten its life. Many Grand Lake boaters have taken their boats or chartered other boats to cruise distant waters while others have dreamed about their ultimate cruise. We are fortunate to have the ability to transport our boats a short distant to the McClellan-Kerr Arkansas River Navigation System. This waterway provides the means to reach the Mississippi River and eventually enter the Gulf of Mexico where the destinations are limited only by your time, money and ability. Once the decision is made on a cruise, the first task is reading and collecting information from as many sources as possible. There is an abundance of information on the internet including downloading charts from NOAA. Cruising guides for the area provide important information as can cruising clubs and other boating organizations. Several Grand Lakers have completed the Great Loop and have a wealth of information for boaters wanting to do it. There is even a web site dedicated to this cruise for information and planning.
