2 Commander: Robert Palmer, SN Lauren Lane Midlothian, VA (804) It has finally happened! The National Marketing Director, Tammy Brown, has reported the Board of Directors approved the use of the name America s Boating Club in marketing United States Power Squadrons as a move to better promote us with boaters everywhere. In addition, the Board of Directors approved a new logo for America s Boating Club and a new tag line, "For Boaters, By Boaters". This tagline was chosen after both members and nonmembers were surveyed. In the interim, national committees, squadrons, and districts are encouraged to use America s Boating Club and when used to link the old name and the new one in one of the following ways: United States Power Squadrons is America s Boating Club United States Power Squadrons. We are America s Boating Club (Your Squadron Name). We are America s Boating Club America s Boating Club, trademark of the United States Power Squadrons The new logo: soon be available as camera-ready artwork through the National Marketing Committee website and details found in the brand standards manual. You will start to see this new logo in marketing and promotional materials in August help spread the word of America s Boating Club. Adding to the list of D5 membership that have actively worked to support our nation-wide marketing and educational image, special thanks go to P/D/C Marty Lafferty, who has spearheaded and managed a terrific set of videos for the Digital Media Library (DML) as well as producing a range of USPS promotional videos to be used at the national, district, and squadron levels. It could not have been done without the participation and support of members from Kent Narrows and Annapolis, who volunteered to serve as on-camera talent helping USPS introduce 'AMERICA'S BOATING CLUB ' to the public by leveraging the internet and social media. Many of you will recall that the use of America s Boating Club began when D5 presented Sea Vester as a marketing tool in (See Commander - continued on page 4 ) blends graphics for paddle boats, power boats and sailboats and will The Bullhorn 2

3 Educational Officer Lt/C Frank Timpano, SN Estate Lane Montpelier, VA (804) Asst. Educational Officer 1 st Lt. Bill Simpson, AP 5618 Virginia Park Dr Providence Forge, VA bcsimpson1@aol.com (804) I thought I'd take a few minutes to recap this year's Boot Camp program as much of our membership may not have heard all the details. This year's program differed from the 2016 program in that we only had two sessions rather than the three we had last year. Also, this year's sessions were held earlier in the season with the expectation that more boaters would prefer to get the training sooner and to avoid the oppressive heat we had with the August class last summer. The programs were advertised in a manner similar to last year's program, but our student population was significantly lower than In discussing this with Onna Grimm, our partner at Deltaville Yachting Center, the location of the classes, she indicated that, in her experience, this is normal--attendance fluctuates from year to year for no known reason. While we had 36 students in 2016, we only had a dozen this year. With four years of Boot Camps under our belts, we are adjusting the program for 2018 by adding an advanced class to follow the beginner's class. Our Assistant Educational Officer, 1/Lt Bill Simpson, is taking on the role of leadership for Boot Camps going forward. He's proposed the new curriculum for the 2018 classes, and you'll hear more about them in upcoming issues. We still intend to hold a May and June class, and the dates are being finalized now. As part of this realignment of the classes, some of the advanced content we had in this year's beginner's boot camp will be moved to the advanced class. Of course, Boot Camp isn't all we are up to! P/C Jim Zeigler, SN, taught Seamanship and Piloting classes earlier this spring and Cdr. Bob Palmer, SN, taught Advanced Piloting. We are making final arrangements for this fall and winter's classes, so look for an update here next month with a class schedule. Meanwhile, be safe on the water, and remember, there's no substitute for education! - Lt/C Frank Timpano The Bullhorn 3

4 Executive Officer: Lt/C Frederick Eddowes, AP Doronhurst Drive Providence Forge, VA (804) The picnic was a success and upcoming are two more opportunities to get together. Let s make the James River Clean Up on September 9 th and the Big Bash on September 16 th two more great events next month. Unfortunately, Betty and I missed the D5 Summer Counsel because Betty suffered a foot injury on Friday that required medical attention. She s feeling better now but is in a wheelchair with an ankle brace and applying ice packs during the day. Our VSCs are continuing this year and examiners need to be ready for next year. Two additional members have the book and I am encouraging them to take the test. Just four of us are current now so we need more folks to become Examiners. Boating safety is what it is all about so if you re thinking about it, please contact me and become an Examiner and help us promote Boating Safety. -Lt/C Fred Eddowes (Commander - continued from page 2 ) I recently participated in the regular session of the James River Advisory Council (JRAC) and learned of three significant opportunities through 1) James River Days; 2) James River Clean Up set for 9 Sept 2017{save the date} and 3) the planned opening of an Appomattox River Trail. All these are posted on the JRAC website ( - P/C George Bruner, AP, is coordinating Richmond s participation in the Clean- Up effort launched from Osbourne Landing in Henrico County. -Cdr Bob Palmer Secretary Lt/C Mary H. Palmer, P Lauren Ln Midlothian, VA R2pmhp@mindspring.com Treasurer Lt/C Michael Silvay, P 5233 Cobblers Stone Ct Glen Allen, VA silv285@verizon.net (804) A great picnic was held at the Virginia Boat Club on the James River. A special thanks to Bob and P/C Barbara Woodburn who made the picnic pavilion available to us and did the set up and clean up for us. Bob suggested fried chicken and it was well accepted and the goodies brought by everyone were enjoyed and all gone. Thanks so much, Woodburns. We had 32 members present including 5 new members who enjoyed the friendship of our members, Linda and Don Goodman, Marji and Gregg Collings and Celeste Ray. P/C Jim Zeigler, SN led the knot tying contest and helped members learn how to safely set off flares. - Lt/C Mary Palmer The Squadron Picnic was a success thanks to the many volunteers who pitched in. Financially, the Squadron Picnic was a success coming in within $20 of break-even. Details of the Squadron's budget and financial status are available from the Treasurer or any Bridge Officer. You may contact us directly or catch us at one of the meetings and we'll be happy to share the financial statements. -Lt/C Michael Silvay Wright Stuff Compliments of Compliments of MOX NIX (no more) The Bullhorn 4 Susan & J.T. 9 WEATHER FOR THE BOATER The safety and comfort of those who venture outdoors and out-on-the water have always been weather dependent. In this course students will become keener observers of the weather, but weather observations only have meaning in the context of the basic principles of meteorology the science of the atmosphere. This course focuses on how weather systems form, behave, move, and interact with one another and reflects the availability of all sorts of weather reports and forecasts on the Internet. This is a general weather course benefiting those sitting in their living rooms, as much as those standing behind the helm. Each student receives a student manual, example weather maps and a cloud chart. The course is planned for one night a week for 9 weeks on Tuesday nights, 7:00 to 9:00 PM, October 3 thru December 5 at the First Baptist Church at Boulevard and Monument Avenue. Cost is $90 to cover course materials, mailing and exam. Please call Jim Zeigler at or at jim@jpzeigler.com
