Taking place in the Martin State Forest, the challenge will feature eight stations, each involving a test of your basic Scout skills. Working together as a patrol, you will go from station to station earning Klondike gold nuggets in pursuit of earning top honors! Will you and your patrol prevail over the winter conditions? Will you prove your mastery of Scouting s basic skills and stand above the other patrols? Find out when the White River Trails District gathers in February at the KLONDIKE CHALLENGE! Page 1 of 6

3 SCOUT SKILLS CHALLENGE COURSE The Klondike Challenge is a patrol-based event. The patrol will succeed or fail on the strength of its members. Adult leaders may accompany their Scouts only as observers and may not lend assistance or offer advice. Patrol members must work together to navigate the course and complete the challenges. The ideal patrol size is six (6) to eight (8) Scouts. Patrols with more than six (6) Scouts will have to sit out members in each event on a rotational basis. The Patrol Leader will have to track the order of who does not participate in each event. The decision of who sits out must be made before the event task is given to the patrol. The patrol should plan to carry with them the following equipment and supplies: Compass Sack Lunch for each Patrol Member First Aid Kit Flint and Steel (No Matches, Lighters, etc.) Boy Scout Handbook (4) Lengths of Rope, approx. 6 each Pencil and Notebook Adequate Water for each Patrol Member FIRE BUILDING Scouts must build a fire to burn through a string. Two matches will be provided. Use of additional matches will result in a time penalty. Use of flint and steel will subtract from the total time. FIRST AID You have located an injured person in a disaster area. Use your Scout skills to properly secure the scene and treat the injury, then move the victim to safety without causing further injury! KNOT TYING Scouts will be expected to tie the 1) square knot, 2) sheet bend, 3) two half hitches, 4) taut-line hitch, 5) bowline, 6) clove hitch, and 7) timber hitch, then whip a rope. Every Scout in the patrol must complete one (1) task. Results will be based on time. LASHINGS Scouts will be tasked with building two (2) camp gadgets a flag pole and a tripod using the correct lashings. The flag pole must be erected and stand on its own. STOWING YOUR GEAR Several items for a backpacking trip will be displayed on a tarp. Properly pack the necessary items in the provided backpack, then put the rest of the gear in a bear bag and hang it safely in a tree. LOG PULL RELAY A team of six (6) Scouts with a 10-foot rope will be judged based on time. Teams will be arranged with three (3) Scouts at each end of the course. The first Scout ties the rope to a long and pulls the log to the other end of the course. The next Scout pulls it back to the beginning of the course, and so on until all Scouts have completed the course. Page 3 of 6
4 BLINDFOLDED TENT SET-UP All members of the patrol will be blindfolded with the exception of the Patrol Leader. The Patrol Leader must guide the rest of the patrol in setting up a tent. The Patrol Leader may not touch any part of the tent in the process of the set-up. SLINGSHOTS Scouts will use slingshots to shoot clay pigeon targets from a distance. Protective eyewear will be provided to the Scouts at the station. COMPETITION SCORING Patrols will have a chance to win gold nuggets at each station. These nuggets will be counted at the end of the day to determine the competition winners. Nuggets will be awarded at each station based on the criteria listed below. Nuggets can also be awarded at any time by the discretion of the Klondike Challenge staff. 1 Nugget Patrol completes the station s challenge 1 Nugget Patrol demonstrates teamwork in completing the challenge 1 Nugget Patrol showed Scout Spirit in completing the challenge 1 Nugget Patrol has the required gear for the station 1 Nugget Patrol is at the correct station in the proper order 1 Nugget Patrol Leader demonstrates leadership of the patrol We will provide recognition to the 1 st Place, 2 nd Place, and 3 rd Place patrols after the Delectable Dessert Competition at 8:00 PM. DELECTABLE DESSERT COMPETITION The Delectable Dessert Competition will be held similar to Iron Chef or Chopped with our own twist! There will be two divisions to the competition, Scout and Adult. Individuals interested in participating in the competition must notify camporee staff no later than 1:00 PM on Saturday. After the Closing Flag Ceremony at 3:15 PM, individuals who have registered for the competition will gather for ingredient distribution. Scouts will go first, followed by Adults. Ingredients will be divided into categories. For each category, one (1) playing card will be given to each participant. The highest card will get to make the first selection, and subsequent selections will be made in decreasing order. Aces will be counted as a value of 1. In the case of two cards of the same value, the tying parties will be issued a second card. Dessert creations must be presented at the Tower Hill Shelter no later than 8:00 PM to begin judging. We will recognize the top Scout creation and the top Adult creation. Page 4 of 6
