2 Certificate IV in Mental Health Are you an existing or potential Mental Health Support Worker who would like a nationally recognised formal qualification? 1 in 5 Australians experience mental illness each year. With a rewarding career as a qualified mental health support worker, you can be part of the solution. Designed to provide participants with a range of rehabilitation and support skills, this six month course will focus on recovery oriented, community based support, intervention and promotional work. Who should enrol? Suitable for those interested in supporting people with mental illness, this course is ideal for anyone who does not yet have a formal tertiary qualification in the mental health field. Although this is a mainstream course designed for everyone, potential peer workers are very welcome to apply. Career Opportunities Demand for Mental Health Workers is high and with the industry facing a shortage of qualified workers, employment prospects will continue to grow and provide new opportunities. This course will equip you for roles such as: Mental Health Worker, Psychosocial Rehabilitation Worker, Mental Health Promoter, Community Support Worker and Outreach Worker. Graduates may find work in clinical settings or home-based outreach along with community services such as supported employment, residential facilities, support groups, corrective, youth services and recreational services.

3 About WAAMH This course is run by The WA Association for Mental Health (WAAMH), the peak body for the community-managed mental health sector in WA. Engaged in the sector for more than 50 years, WAAMH is a non-profit organisation who advocate on mental health issues, deliver sector support services and promote positive attitudes to mental health. What is Recovery? 'Recovery' is a widely accepted philosophy of practice for mental health enhancement. More than simply overcoming mental illness, it is an individual s unique personal journey towards wellbeing. The core principles of recovery include hope, empowerment, choice and building on personal strength. WAAMH s Certificate IV in Mental Health has a strong emphasis on supporting the recovery process. What is a Community Mental Health Service? Community based mental health services are those which are: Community managed: not government or commercial Community based: outside a hospital setting There are hundreds of different community based mental health services around WA, who employ mental health workers. WAAMH s Certificate IV in Mental Health is WA s only qualification specialising in community-based recovery.

4 Course Overview Length This part-time, 15 unit, one Semester course includes: 104 class hours (16 days) 4 site visits Mental Health Careers Seminar Welcome and orientation event 80 workplace / field placement hours Lecturers Our teaching staff are qualified adult educators who draw on years of experience in the mental health sector and have up to date knowledge of mental health practice. Passionate about mental health, our engaging and approachable teachers have backgrounds such as psychology, mental health nursing and health promotion. 5 Units The course consists of the following 15 units: CHCDIV001 Work with diverse people CHCDIV002 Promote Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander cultural safety CHCLEG001 Work legally and ethically CHCMHS002 Establish self-directed recovery relationships CHCMHS003 Provide recovery oriented mental health services CHCMHS004 Work collaboratively with the care network and other services CHCMHS005 Provide services to people with co-existing mental health and alcohol and other drugs issues CHCMHS007 Work effectively in trauma informed care CHCMHS008 Promote and facilitate self advocacy CHCMHS011 Assess and promote social, emotional and physical wellbeing HLTWHS001 Participate in workplace health and safety CHCCCS003 Increase the safety of individuals at risk of suicide CHCCOM002 Use communication to build relationships CHCDIS008 Facilitate community participation and social inclusion HLTWHS006 Manage personal stressors in the work environment

7 Work Placements Placements can be completed at a wide range of community mental health services to suit your availability and career interests. You will be required to work a minimum of 80 placement hours which is approximately 18 x eight hour shifts or the equivalent. If you are already working in the mental health sector, you can choose to complete your placement at your existing workplace. If not, or if you would prefer to broaden your experience, we will assist you to select and secure an appropriate placement. Your placement must be completed within six months of the conclusion of your classes. Assessments Each unit includes a series of competency based assessments which may be required to be completed in class, in your own time, or as part of your work placement. Assessments may include: Written assignments, projects or reports Class activities, discussions and group work Knowledge based tests Verbal presentations Practical activities and problem solving Workplace activities as part of your placement There are no exams, but you will receive individual feedback and comments on your work. Individual assistance is available to students having difficulty with an assessment and resubmission opportunities may be negotiated if an initial submission is not marked as competent.

8 Student Information Prerequisites: All students require: Sound basic English skills (speaking, reading and writing) A positive attitude towards mental health recovery Basic computer literacy and computer access Registration: You can register online at There are three payment options: Upfront payment of $2,875 online by credit card Deposit of $600 by credit card plus 5 monthly payments of $500 ($3,100 total) Attendance: Due to the intensive nature of this course, attendance at all sessions is essential. Missing just one day would be the equivalent of missing six weeks of classes in a traditional course, and every class day will include assessment. If a class is missed, students will be responsible for arranging to cover what was missed in their own time. Qualification: This course is a Nationally Recognised Qualification. Completion of this course is through an auspice partnership with Aspire to Succeed Pty Ltd, Registered Training Organisation, National Training Provider All competent students who successfully complete this course will attain CHC43315 Certificate IV in Mental Health.
