2 The Wayside Chapel draws people out of social isolation and invites them into the healing place of community. People marginalised by homelessness, mental health issues and substance abuse can turn to Wayside for compassion, tolerance and support. Our community services centres in Bondi and Kings Cross, youth space and outreach service, mental health program, community cafe and Aboriginal program are all designed to ensure the most disadvantaged members of our community have access to essential health, welfare, social and recreational services. Vision: Love over hate. Mission: Creating community with no us and them. Values: Openness (No secrets): We have a profoundly simple mission, which is to create a community, and our message and work are undiluted with other agendas. Teamwork (No cowboys): Our goal of creating community is also our method. We work in a collaborative way to invite people out of singular, individual life into the risky and healing place of community. Patience (No rush): We cannot make people change. If we could, we d be guilty of manipulation of some kind. Instead we are on the lookout for sparks of life, signs that people long for better, and we look to engage and help people move to better days and better health. Wayside is not an intensive care unit but an invitation into life and community. Respect (No Judges): People have the right to make their own decisions. People have the right to make bad decisions. Wayside s mission is not to fix people but to love them and be with them, knowing that if they are really met, they ll really move toward health and life.
3 About Wayside s Aboriginal Program The Aboriginal Program operates 5 days a week at Kings Cross. The Aboriginal Program aims to provide a meeting place for the Aboriginal community in a culturally sensitive, safe, stimulating and welcoming environment. The Aboriginal Program brings the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community at Wayside together in such a way that is culturally sensitive, respectful and appropriate. It engages and supports Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander visitors and tailors the program to the needs of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community, which makes up a significant percentage of all visitors to Wayside. The activities program provides the opportunity for our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander visitors to develop a sense of belonging and place. The program operates in a dedicated safe space, accessible to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, the only one of its kind in Sydney s inner city area. Regular activities include a weekly community lunch, a living skills program, storey-telling workshops, boxing and fitness classes and an arts program. The weekly Wednesday Mob Lunch provides visitors with access to health, housing and other advocacy agencies. This service hub has developed because of the popularity of the lunch and the opportunity created to assist visitors to move toward greater health and life. The program supports Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander visitors through various pathways including education, employment and referral out of disadvantaged areas and domestic violence situations. Through outreach, the Aboriginal Program staff provide support in court matters, medical cases and other means of advocacy to meet community members needs.
4 Position Description Aboriginal Worker Position Summary The Aboriginal Worker is employed to work as an active part of the Wayside Chapel s Aboriginal Program team in facilitating this specialist program. The Aboriginal Worker will work to deliver a culturally sensitive and appropriate program which: Promotes independence, self-determination and self-worth in all visitors through community engagement; Provides service and support that bridges the gap between visitors and existing primary health care, welfare and mainstream services in the inner city and eastern suburbs area; Promotes harm minimisation especially in the areas of safe sex and alcohol and other drug use and injecting practices; Promotes equitable access to a basic standard of living including personal health and hygiene and accommodation; Identifies and creates recreational, vocational and/or educational pathways and opportunities for visitors; and Creates and promotes opportunities and pathways for participation in the Wayside community. Key Accountabilities & Responsibilities General Supervise and maintain a relaxed, stimulating, clean and safe drop in environment which at all times maintains appropriate cultural sensitivity to all visitors, staff and volunteers; Facilitate group activities to provide opportunities for living skills, educational, social and recreational engagement and relationship building; Assess risks and undertake conflict management and resolution including de-escalation of violent incidents as required. Promote a harm minimisation model and provide information on health and welfare issues. Assist the creation of an environment of social inclusion and engagement for Aboriginal visitors within the broader Wayside Chapel
5 Care Coordination Advocate for and provide practical support, information and referrals to visitors regarding health, welfare and other essential services; Provide planned individualised support and care coordination for visitors who need assistance to achieve longer term goals; Undertake outreach support as directed including court support, hospital visits, prison visits, etc. Undertake all relevant administration duties, including accurate documentation of all relevant visitor information, individualised support provision, monthly statistical reports and incident management reporting. Planning Develop, implement and evaluate group activities for Aboriginal visitors; Consult with Aboriginal visitors to identify their needs and tailor program activities accordingly. Create opportunities for Aboriginal visitors to access other programs already available at The Wayside Chapel. Work with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community to identify and document needs to inform future program development at The Wayside Chapel. Assist the Aboriginal Program Manager to evaluate the program, including statistics analysis, program goals and objectives and measurements; Actively participate in formal evaluations of Aboriginal Programs and services; Actively participate in team meetings; Attend all organisational and external meetings as required; Actively participate in service and organisational planning; Participate in the review and further development of policy and procedures. People Supervise and support volunteers in the provision of service in the Aboriginal Program including the provision of orientation, ongoing education, training and debriefing. Supervise students and assist them with formal supervision and practical learning requirements of their placement. Identify need for volunteer or student involvement in provision of services within the Aboriginal Program. Maintain work-life balance by practicing appropriate self-care on an individual, team and organization-wide basis, taking into account any relevant cultural obligations; Promote the objectives of Wayside s Supported Employment Program by walking alongside Wayside supported staff with sensitivity to the barriers they face to open employment and celebrating contribution to community.
6 Workplace Health & Safety Actively promote health and safety, and take reasonably practicable steps to control risks, ensuring a safe workplace for visitors, staff and volunteers. Comply with legislation and all Wayside WHS policies and procedures and instructions, reporting any hazards or safety issues and performing all tasks in a manner which guards against risk to self and others within the workplace. Other Undertake duties across all programs of The Wayside Chapel as required Any other duties as directed by the Aboriginal Program Manager Undertake training as required and directed. Note This position description and associated information should not be considered as comprehensive in its description of responsibilities, criteria or outcomes. It is indicative of the position. The Aboriginal Worker can and will be asked to undertake duties within their competencies, skills and abilities and training that may not be mentioned in this document. The Aboriginal Worker should be aware that their position within The Wayside Chapel is dynamic. The Wayside Chapel expects continuing development, change and improvement of processes, practices, knowledge and skills. Selection Criteria Applications must address each essential selection criteria individually. Applications which do not individually address each selection criteria will not be considered. Essential Criteria Experience performing care coordination and supporting people with complex needs including issues of homelessness, mental health and alcohol and other drugs; Demonstrated ability to ensure a stimulating and safe environment including the implementation of programs and activities; Demonstrated ability and experience supporting and supervising volunteers and/or students; Experience working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in a culturally appropriate way

All applications will be assessed by this panel against the essential and desirable criteria based on their resume and cover letter. Applicants who are successful at this stage will be offered an interview with the selection panel. Interviews will be scheduled in the week commencing Monday 18 September o Applicants with a disability should inform the convenor of the selection panel of any special requirements upon contact to arrange an interview. o A short-list of successful applicants will be created. Referees will be checked at this time to substantiate information provided by successful applicants. o An offer will be made to the successful candidate pending the satisfactory completion of a police criminal record and working with children check. o Unsuccessful interviewees will be contacted personally and informed of the outcome of their application.
