The focus of these skills could be: Undertaking pastoral ministry in a Church or other Christian organisation Undertaking chaplaincy in a government, educational, commercial or community organisation. This course is one of two compulsory options put forward by the Federal government for new school Chaplains. Taking the Pastoral/Chaplaincy skills and values into any workplace Industry The course has been developed to meet the demands of industry for a Consultation training package that would provide a recognised qualification to persons seeking to engage in an occupation such as Chaplaincy in schools, or the work of pastoral assistant in a church setting. To this end consultation was engaged in, and continues with, School Chaplaincy ACT administered Unity College Australia 2016 Last edit Page 1 of 6
2 by Scripture Union ACT, who engage chaplains for schools. Connection with a network of church pastors in the ACT, and beyond, is ongoing. Pre-course orientation & assessment strategy All applicants are required to complete a formal application and supply relevant references. These applications provide sufficient information to enable the course coordinator to assess their suitability or otherwise for the course. An orientation session is held for all students prior to course commencement. This covers both academic and environmental aspects. Where appropriate, RPL is offered to clients in order to recognise skills that they have already gained. National recognition is also provided for any units of competency that have been achieved with any other registered training organisation. Delivery and Assessment Arrangements Duration The course is delivered in either a series of intensive modules once in a Semester, with associated field experience, or over a period of 1 year. Schedule Intensives are typically offered in groups of 2 days in a week over a period of 6 weeks. Sessions each day range from 4 ½ hours to 6 hours duration. Field Experience is in the workplace and may exceed the Semester according to opportunity to cover the required Units. Field Experience assessment takes a holistic view due to the nature of the work of Chaplaincy and Pastoral Care. This course can be delivered in conjunction with the 10433NAT Certificate IV in Christian Ministry and Theology which would enable completion within either an additional six month timeframe or in parallel with the above mentioned course. Units from this Course are eligible as Electives in 10433NAT Certificate IV in Christian Ministry and Theology. Further details of the training program can be found in the individual subject outlines including: week by week training breakdown, assessment activities including when in the program they are to be undertaken mapping of the delivery and assessment to relevant units of competency and their elements and performance criteria can be found in the individual subject outlines. Physical Resources and Equipment Appropriate training rooms and equipment are available from the provider of this course. Students are expected have a personal computer in order to undertake relevant training and assessment tasks. Delivery Arrangements The course is delivered at the Unity College campus. It combines face-to-face trainer led classes and practical sessions involving small group and individual activities. This course also entails private study time for each subject. The students also undertake field experience within the context of their local church or Christian organisation, a third party organisation as opportunity presents. 4 Training and Assessment tools may be adjusted to reflect the individual needs of the Assessment learners, for example some students may have a higher proportion of oral or context practical rather than written assessment where their written skills are not as high. Community context There is a strong emphasis on the training being delivered in a community context. Barriers to employment can often be as much about a person's inability to relate and effectively empathise with other people as it is due to the lack of skills. For this reason there is a strong group emphasis on undertaking tasks together and working as a team in addition to the usual training priorities. Partnership Context This Qualification may be delivered in this format in a partnership context. For this to be done the partner must have signed a formal partnership agreement with the college and have met the conditions for this qualification to be added to the courses approved for the partner to offer. Special needs Examples of adjustments that could be made for special needs participants are as follows: acceptance of an external helper to assist a disabled student in the learning process more intense 1-1 training recording of training sessions for slower learners pairing slower students with other more advanced students to provide extra assistance assistance for students with hearing difficulties Providing on-line learning options for specified units Accommodating skills previously acquired Student progress and needs are monitored at a Course level in quarterly interviews, as well as weekly by Trainers. Learner Progress The course involves ongoing formal and informal, formative and summative assessments which would usually occur progressively through a Semester or Term. With field activity a broad range of performance criteria are mapped and signed off on notes, observation and submission of assessment. Types of assessment are noted in the evidence gathering chart above. One-on-one academic counselling and coaching is provided, particularly where the learner is not achieving the required outcomes in a timely manner. 5 Assessment The processes used to moderate & validate assessment in this program are: validation Academic leadership has the responsibility for developing, managing and process monitoring strategies to ensure consistency in assessment. The College consults with representatives from industry / enterprises/ professional bodies on regular basis to validate competency standards required in the courses are consistent with industry practice. The College conducts per course internal moderation. External moderation is used cyclically to test quality of training covering such items as competency assessment, trainer delivery, and materials. All assessors receive information to support quality assessment practices. Internal audits are conducted annually by the academic leadership and/or by an external auditor. Student and trainer evaluation surveys are completed at the end of each subject and course. A continuous feedback process is in place, which involves gathering information from applicants, industry and other users of the assessment process. Infrastructure requirements Pathways All staff (including full time, part time and casual) involved in the delivery and assessment of this qualification, have direct access to the current version of the relevant Training Package, including the appropriate units of competency, assessment guidelines and qualification structure. All staff (including full time, part time and casual) involved in delivering the program have access to trainer, assessor and student support materials relevant to their areas of delivery and assessment. All assessors have access to print and electronic copies of the assessment tools used in this program. The RTO has access to staff and training/assessment resources to meet the requirements of students with special needs and has an assessment process that incorporates reasonable adjustment procedures. Description Unity College s implementation of this qualification is designed to be aligned with more general training in Christian Ministry and Theology. It also lends itself to being preparatory training for a range of other community services courses at the Certificate IV and Diploma levels. Particular pathways are as follows: Christian Ministry: 10433NAT Certificate IV in Christian Ministry and Theology 10434NAT Diploma of Christian Ministry and Theology 10435NAT Advanced Diploma of Christian Ministry and Theology Community services: Certificate IV in Community Services (other streams) Diploma of Community Services (various streams) Job Roles A competent person could undertake varying pastoral roles which could encompass areas such as pastoral care within a church or community organisation or school or workplace chaplaincy roles.
