You can choose courses from the Human Services HSC syllabus Health Services Assistant, Individual Support (Ageing) or Allied Health Services. You may also be interested in Indigenous Primary Health Care or Community Services Social Work. HUMAN SERVICES HEALTH SERVICES ASSISTANCE Offered at Albury, Griffith and Wagga Wagga campuses. Are you looking for a career in Nursing? This course will provide you with the relevant skills and knowledge to specialise as an Assistant in Nursing in a hospital environment. You will be performing practical tasks in assisting nurses to monitor a patient s condition such as taking temperatures, blood pressure and respiration rates in a setting which simulates the acute care environment. You will learn about healthy body systems, medical terminology, infection control, responding to behaviours, working in a safe workplace, attending to patients all whilst working as part of a team. the full Certificate III qualification which means you can obtain employment immediately you finish school! The course can also be used as a pathway to the Diploma in Nursing qualification which following registration requirements will allow you to gain employment in public and private hospitals, aged care facilities, home and community, mental health, doctors surgeries and many other settings. From here an Advanced Diploma of Nursing will allow you to specialise in a range of health disciplines including Palliative Care, Paediatrics or Mental Health. There s never been a better time to choose a career in health as Australia is currently experiencing high growth in employment for graduates and for those who are still studying. 2 HLT33115 Certificate III in Health Services Assistance (assistant in nursing work in acute care) 5 HSC Units 80 hours is mandatory for successful completion of the full Certificate III qualification which means you can obtain employment in an aged care facility immediately you finish school! The course is a pathway to further qualifications in Certificate IV Aged Care or to Certificate IV or Diploma qualifications in Leisure and Health which involves the design, implementation and evaluation of activities programs for the aged. Are you looking for a career in a specialised area of nursing? Our Aged Care course is for those students who have a desire to nurse those that cannot look after themselves and who require care and attention of a professional standard either in an aged care residential or community based care setting. You will achieve a full Certificate III qualification working in a simulated care setting whilst you learn about personal care of the aged, activities of daily living and carrying out activities related to an individualised plan of care. You will learn about healthy body systems, medical terminology, infection control, responding to behaviours, assisting clients with medication, supporting a client s emotional wellbeing, working in a safe workplace, all whilst working as part of a team. 6 HSC Units 120 hours is mandatory for successful completion of

3 HUMAN SERVICES ALLIED HEALTH ASSISTANCE Offered at Cootamundra campus. This course is for those students who wish to pursue a career as an Allied Health Assistant, providing assistance to a range of allied health professionals. It is an entry level qualification and graduates operate under direct supervision of those who conduct programs and therapeutic interventions. You will gain skills and knowledge in recognising healthy body systems, applying medical terminology, assisting with client movement, infection control practices, providing first aid, supporting a client s wellbeing, assisting with physiotherapy and rehabilitation of clients. the full certificate iii qualification which means you can obtain employment immediately you finish school. There are many professions that graduates could be employed as an assistant to including podiatry, physiotherapy, speech and occupational therapies, dietics or rehabilitation. This course will also provide you with advanced standing into certificate IV in Allied Health. HLT33015 Certificate III in Allied Health Assistance 4 HSC Units 80 hours is mandatory for successful completion of INDIGENOUS PRIMARY HEALTH CARE Offered for delivery by virtual classroom and online with face to face workshops at a location to be determined. As its name suggests, this course of study prepares students to work as a health worker with the goal of improving health outcomes of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. You will gain skills and knowledge in first aid, infection control practices and administrative processes. You will also be trained to identify and respond to those at risk whilst supporting clients of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait communities to access appropriate health services. Graduates of this course can play a vital role in the primary health care workforce providing clinical and primary care for individuals, families and community groups. This area of study is ideal for those with an interest in providing care to the communities of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders across Australia. While a large majority of health workers are employed in Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations or the Government Health Sector, many also work within mainstream services such as general practices and other non-government organisations in a range of health support roles. 4 COMMUNITY SERVICES - SOCIAL WORK Offered at Albury, Deniliquin, Griffith, Wagga Wagga and Young campuses. Social work involves working with people who are at challenging times within their lives. This course will provide you with skills and knowledge in the area of social work including the necessary components of communicating with clients and working with others, in addition to working effectively with people, preparing for work involving drugs and alcohol and supporting the work of community service groups. This area is both challenging and rewarding and is primarily for those who would like to be a part of the solution to problems facing our community today. This course prepares you for a career in community services and provides a pathway to further study to Diploma of Community Services Work leading into a university degree in Social Science / Social Work. The community service sector is experiencing rapid growth and there s a high demand for skilled workers in regional areas. Positions in the community service sector commence with entry level support roles through to advanced practitioner and management level opportunities. There is a qualification to suit each level and each is a pathway to further study at the next level. CHC32015 Certificate III in Community Services 4 HSC Units 70 hours is mandatory for successful completion of Immunisation and criminal record check may be required SCHOOL BASED TRAINEESHIPS There are a number of courses students can undertake at Riverina Institute in the health and community services industries as a school based trainee: School Based Traineeships: CHC33015 Certificate III in Individual Support (Ageing) HLT20113 Certificate II in Health Services Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health HLT33015 Certificate III in Health Services Allied Health Assistance HLT33015 Certificate III in Health Services Health Services Assistance All of the above courses will count towards your HSC unit credit and those that are Industry Curriculum Framework courses can also be used for the calculation of your ATAR if you choose to undertake the HSC examination. What are school based traineeships? School based traineeships are available to all Year 10, 11 and 12 students in NSW. They allow students to complete an apprenticeship or traineeship while at school, combining paid work and training to work towards obtaining an industry recognised national qualification and credit towards the HSC. How are they organised? Once a student and an employer identify they would like to enter into a school based traineeship agreement, the student should speak to their school careers advisor who will commence the process on their behalf. School based traineeships are established and protected in the same way as a fulltime traineeship. The parties involved (that is, the trainer, the trainee, the employer, the school and the parent or guardian) sign a training contract. The training contract sets out the responsibilities and obligations of each party. The training contract is prepared and lodged with State Training Services by the chosen Australian Apprenticeship Centre.

5 How long does it take to complete? A school based traineeship is undertaken over two years with completion of the formal training by the end of Term 3 of the HSC year. Trainees are released from school one day per week to undertake the on the job training component. At least 100 days of on the job training is required to successfully complete a traineeship, sometimes more, therefore additional days during holiday breaks or on weekends will be need to be undertaken. All on the job days are negotiated between all parties at the time of signing the training plan. Formal training is delivered at Riverina Institute. Some assessment activities may be completed whilst on the job in the workplace. The training plan A training plan will be developed outlining the units of competency to be undertaken over the duration of the traineeship. There are two components of units mandatory units which encompass the HSC exam and elective units. Units are taken from the Board of Studies syllabus and electives are selected to reflect the needs of the employer and student. Every school based trainee has an individual training plan. The plan also includes a proposed pattern of the on the job and off the job components. Once the plan has been developed in line with Board of Studies requirements, a sign up meeting will be organised for all stakeholders student, parent/guardian, school, Riverina Institute trainer or their representative, employer and apprenticeship centre. HOW AND WHEN TO APPLY FOR TVET COURSES To apply for a TAFE delivered VET course you will need to complete an Expression of Interest through your current school. Your school will submit details on your behalf.
