2 Leisure and recreation two day workshop 29 th & 30 th April 2009 Looking for high quality, profession specific education for your lifestyle and leisure/recreation activities staff? This two day workshop covers the two hot topics of the moment: accreditation and quality leisure programming for people with dementia. Day 1 will focus on preparing for this round of residential aged care accreditation with an emphasis on Standard 3: Resident Lifestyle. Participants will gain invaluable tips and hints for successfully surviving the accreditation visit. Day 2 will focus on how to effectively meet the leisure needs of people with dementia. Contemporary and highly effective approaches to working with people with dementia will be covered including many great practical ideas. Day 2 will suit those working either in a community or residential setting. All speakers are highly qualified and able to offer practice examples based on best practice. 4 Leisure and recreation two day seminar Looking for some stimulation to keep your leisure and recreation program alive along with some much needed motivation for yourself. Then this two day seminar is for you! Seven sessions across the two days packed with fresh ideas and current information. Suitable to those working in both community and residential aged care. Day 1: Wednesday 11 th November 2009 One to one leisure programs An inspirational presentation on the development and implementation of one to one activities within residential and community care. This session will provide some great ideas for developing and implementing one to one activities with your clients. Activities for cognitive stimulation This session will explore the use of cognitive activities within leisure programmes. Tips and hints for conducting effective cognitive stimulation sessions will be discussed along with the sharing of ideas for cognitive activities. Developing leisure based care plans Care planning writing is one of those essential skills that takes lots of practice and time to develop your skills. During this session participants will be provided with tips and hints for making care planning writing easier and more effective. This double session will be run as two groups. One for beginners to care plan writing and another for those more experienced but wanting to further develop their skills. Day 2: Thursday 12 th November 2009 Working with culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) clients An informative session that will provide you with plenty of practical advice on how to ensure you are meeting the needs of clients from a range of cultural backgrounds. Activities for people in the late stages of dementia The provision of suitable leisure programmes for people in the late stages of dementia can be challenging but very rewarding. This session will explore the possibilities and approaches that have found to be effective and valuable. The art of reminiscing A practical session that will provide examples of how to effectively implement reminiscence sessions with your clients. Ideas for reminiscence topics and approaches will be shared. Burnout Research shows that Australians are working longer hours and are losing the natural balance between work, family and leisure. Gabrielle will discuss why this is so and how we can accentuate the positive for ourselves and our clients. 5 Key facilitators: Ms Jacqueline Quirke (MCommHlth; GradDipHlthSc; AssDipAppSc(DT); BSZ) Following graduation from the University of Sydney, Jacqueline worked for six years managing the diversional therapy services at Blacktown Hospital. Her experience includes service provision in the Rehabilitation, Paediatrics, Community Outreach, and general hospital areas. Upon completion of her Masters degree, Jacqueline joined the University of Sydney as a Lecturer and worked there from teaching on the Bachelor of Applied Science (Leisure and Health). Jacqueline has been actively involved over many years in the Aged Care Accreditation process as an Aged Care Quality Assessor. In 2003, she became a member of the higher awards panel for the National Office of the Aged Care Standards and Accreditation Agency. Over the years Jacqueline has also presented at conference and at a variety of workshops to diversional therapy practitioners across Australia. Jacqueline is a Past President of The Diversional Therapy Association (DTA) of New South Wales, was a New South Wales representative on the DTA of Australia National Council Education Committee and the editor of the monthly DTA Newsletter from Jacqueline continues her involvement with the professional Association through working parties and representing the Association at various government meetings. Jacqueline is also the co-author of two diversional therapy manuals and two programming and activity books (Starting Points for Programs and Activities / Books 1 & 2). Dr Gabrielle Koop (PhD; MA; BA; TAA; BSZ) Gabrielle has been an owner and director of Redleaf College since its establishment in 2000 and is directly involved in the day-to-day operations of the college. She represents Redleaf at conferences and trade expos, provides workshops for a number of organisations as well as carrying out consultancy services to service providers in the health care industry. Gabrielle is committed to the advancement of diversional therapy through professional development and workplace education and training. Her work as an aged care quality assessor has provided her with many insights into the professional role of diversional therapists and the needs of their clients. Gabrielle has many years experience in education and training and started her career as a teacher and has taught at school, TAFE and University (undergraduate and postgraduate) levels. She has a PhD in education and her research focused on the education and assessment of adult learners. Gabrielle also has a Masters in Education and Work. From she was involved in the development and co-ordination of the Bachelor of Applied Science (Leisure and Health) at the University of Sydney. Gabrielle is the co-author of two books ~ Starting Points for Programs and Activities / Books 1 & 2. These books provide program and activity ideas for each day of the year and are available through B&S Books. 5

7 Cancellation and transfer policy Should you be unable to attend, a substitute participant is welcome at no extra charge. If you cancel more than 14 days prior to the workshop, you will receive a refund of less $40.00 to cover administrative costs. If you cancel 7 days prior to the workshop you will receive a 50% refund. Regrettably, no refunds can be made for cancellation received less than 7 days prior to the event. All cancellation or transfer notification must be received in writing. Once a registration has been received and either an invoice issued or a letter of acceptance sent the person registered or their organisation accepts the workshop position and is required to pay the full fee for the workshop. Redleaf reserves the right to amend the workshop program without notice. Workshops may be cancelled or re-scheduled if minimum numbers are not reached. Maximum participant limits for each workshop have been set. Venues may be changed if required. 7
