2 overview Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) is one of the leading causes of death in the United States claiming more lives than lung cancer, breast cancer and AIDS combined. Each year more than 335,000 people die of SCA (a sudden and abrupt loss of heart function caused by a chaotic heart rhythm disturbance, resulting in death, if not prevented with early defibrillation). Heart rhythm problems that result in SCA are related to the electrical impulses and muscle strength of the heart and can attack anyone of almost any age. Despite best practice efforts, it is estimated that only 20-30% of those that have indication or are at risk for SCA are receiving treatment to prevent it. This educational activity will provide the attendee with the competencies necessary to diagnose, to treat and/or to refer patients for treatment in order to prevent SCA. Some of the topics to be presented will include an up to date review of the causes of SCA, current and future risk stratification for predicting SCA, including racial and gender differences, a review of genetic predisposition to SCA, antiarrhythmia drug therapy and ICD s available to protect those at risk for SCA. In addition, discussion of various disease states such as heart failure and atrial fibrillation, and their relation to SCA will take place. This program will provide attendees with information on cardiac imaging methods and their use in indentifying those at risk for SCA and providing effective treatment. target audience The program s target audience will include primary care physicians, cardiologists, electrophysiologists, nurses, emergency medical technicians and other healthcare professionals with an interest in arrhythmias and Sudden Cardiac Arrest prevention. course objectives After participating in this course, the attendee should be able to: Discuss the significance and etiologies of Sudden Cardiac Arrest. Apply current and future risk stratification strategies. Describe the indications for Implantable Defibrillator (ICD) Therapy; including pros and cons. Assess the role of antiarrhythmia drug therapy in the prevention and treatment of Sudden Cardiac Arrest. Identify the co-existing disease states and the associated risk of Sudden Cardiac Arrest. Formulate and/or implement strategies for diagnosing, treating, and/or referring patients with Sudden Cardiac Arrest. accreditation Scripps Health is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (AC- CME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians. Scripps Health designates this educational activity for a maximum number of 10.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s).
