2 Pediatric Hospital Medicine BOOT CAMP UCSF Medical Center, Parnassus Campus Kanbar Simulation Center and Lange Room June 19-21, 2014 This innovative 3-day course focuses on hands-on skills building for physicians and allied health professionals who are actively engaged in the care of acutely ill, hospitalized children. Using a patient centered approach, course participants will spend the majority of the time in small group settings, each led by experienced UCSF faculty. In addition, each participant will be taught, directly observed, and given feedback using UCSF's state-of-the-art simulation center. The course enrollment is limited to facilitate close interactions with UCSF Pediatric Hospital Medicine faculty. TARGET AUDIENCE Designed for early career hospitalists, fellows, and senior residents whose clinical focus is the care of the hospitalized child. ACCREDITATION The University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine (UCSF) is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians. UCSF designates this live activity for a maximum of AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s) TM. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. This CME activity meets the requirements under California Assembly Bill 1195, continuing education and cultural and linguistic competency. EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES The purpose of this course is to increase competence and improve clinical practice in pediatric hospital medicine. We specifically anticipate improvements in skills and strategies to: Implement a plan of care apply key clinical advances in the field of pediatric hospital medicine such as advances for the care of the child with UTI, pneumonia, and seizures; Interpret signs and symptoms of clinical deterioration such as status asthmaticus/epilepticus and develop team-based management strategies to stabilize the child during these urgent clinical situations utilizing simulations; Manage acute and chronic pain in the hospitalized child; Improve key procedural skills during the care of the hospitalized child such as umbilical line placement, sedation, and intraosseous access; Examine the role of everyday communication in the hospital setting and practicing strategies to improve performance with difficult situations during family centered rounds and end of life discussions.
