2 The American Neurogastroenterology and Motility Society s 4th Biennial Course on Gastrointestinal Motility & Neurogastroenterology in Clinical Practice Course Directors, Professor of Medicine, Gastroenterology Section, Department of Medicine, Temple University Hospital, Philadelphia, Pa., Professor of Medicine, Director, The Center for Gastrointestinal Nerve & Muscle Function & Division of GI Motility, University of Kansas Medical Center, Kansas City, Kan., PhD, FRCP, Professor of Medicine, Director, Neurogastroenterology and GI Motility, University of Iowa, Iowa City, Iowa. Overview This will be a comprehensive, clinically oriented course on gastrointestinal motility in clinical practice. This fourth course of the American Neurogastroenterology and Motility Society will build on and further expand the content of the first three courses in 2002, 2004, and 2006, which received extraordinarily positive feedback and success. The course will emphasize new developments in diagnosis, evaluation and treatments of GI motility and functional GI disorders and will stress the role and application of these new developments to the practitioner. The course faculty are experts actively practicing and publishing in the field of gastrointestinal motility, functional GI disorders and neurogastroenterology. Course Goal The goal of this course is to familiarize and update participants on the current indications, methodology, and interpretation of clinical GI motility tests. In addition, the course will provide in-depth discussion of the physiology and pathophysiology and treatment of GI motility and functional bowel disorders as well as emphasizing the spectrum of gastroesophageal reflux disease, esophageal motility disorders, gastroparesis, irritable bowel syndrome, and chronic constipation. Multiple formats will be used, including didactic lectures, workshop discussions and case-based presentations. Each of these will involve audience participation at three particular levels the practicing physician, the GI motility nurse/technician, and the gastroenterology fellow. Case presentations will be used to help drive home key points from the lectures and stress applicability and practical aspects of adding new knowledge to the clinical care of patients. Information from society-based practice guidelines will be covered. Target Audience This course is intended for gastroenterologists in academic and clinical practice, GI fellows, nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, technicians and medical assistants involved in adult and pediatric GI motility testing and research. The course will provide information that is particularly applicable to the practice setting. Objectives Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to: Explain the indications and proper methodology, as well as how to interpret a broad range of clinical GI motility tests frequently utilized in patient care, including esophageal manometry, esophageal ph monitoring, gastric emptying scintigraphy, breath testing for bacterial overgrowth, and anorectal manometry. Review new pharmacology and new therapeutic advances in GI motility and functional bowel disorders including treatment strategies based on the results of motility tests. Assess the role of new equipment available for the GI motility laboratory high resolution manometry, SmartPill, and breath testing in order to better evaluate and treat patients with GI motility disorders and persistent symptoms of GERD. Discuss the importance of how recent basic scientific concepts in GI motility apply to our diagnosis and treatment of clinical GI motility and functional bowel disorders. Assess how new developments in diagnosis, evaluation and treatments of GI motility and functional GI disorders affect patient-care decision making in order to improve patient care outcomes. Special Features Use of Audience Response System to allow audience participation in decision making Focus on applications of GI motility in clinical practice Workshops geared to different levels: Physicians, nurses/technicians, and fellows Case-based learning for physicians, nurses, and GI fellows Acknowledgments Financial contributions and supporters of this program will be acknowledged in print at the symposium. Accreditation All participants are required to sign attendance rosters at the beginning of each day.
