Wow! What a wonderful time we had at ASPAN S 35 th National Conference in Philadelphia. The theme was Renew Perianesthesia Passion: Inspire Excellence. The conference gave us an opportunity to network with peers, leaders, and experts from diverse geographic and healthcare arenas. How nice it was to meet girls from RMPANA, and new leaders from around Colorado and Wyoming, (cheesesteaks and soft pretzels were a bonus.) Katrina Bickerstaff is our new ASPAN President. Congratulations to Valerie Watkins ASPAN s new Secretary. Our new web site is up and running and our newsletter which will be published twice a year. Keep tuned into our website, rmpana.nursingnetwork.com. Don t miss new workshops and seminars being offered by our districts. It also provides the opportunity to contact other nurses and gives you informational information about RMPANA. Staying on track with our Strategic plan, we summited our gold leaf application this year, and will do so again next year. We will also be applying for Shining star next year. Please go to ASPAN s and ABPANC s web site to review what information is required for submitting the applications. RMPANA leaders, I will be asking you to submit information that is required for the application process. Keep in mind two important educational offerings. Leadership Development Institute (LDI) to be held in Covington Kentucky -September RMPANA leaders are asked to participate. RMPANA does have scholarship monies put aside for this event. Retreat in the Rockies will be held in Winter Park this year October 6,7,8. What a lineup of speakers we have for this year s conference. Remember to register for the conference on the website. So much preparation, but beyond that, so much learning and of course, the socializing. It was so wonderful to see so many Region 1 members participating in this amazing experience. For those of you lucky enough to attend, I hope you took away new knowledge and great memories. Share your new information with your peers and encourage others to do the same. If you weren t able to attend this past year, know that you were missed and I hope you will consider participating in There are many things that I love about going to conference. The most important aspect of conference for me is having the opportunity to be filled up again. Our days are long and we are a caring profession. We care for patients, families, older nurses, younger nurses, student nurses and our peers. We then go home and care for partners, children, parents and friends. It s easy to see how our buckets continue to be emptied with very little coming in at times. But conference fills me. It reminds me why I love nursing, and especially, perianesthesia nursing. Be reflective and think of the one major reason you entered our sacred profession. If it s taking a few minutes to pin point this reason, you need your bucket refilled. We had so many opportunities to do this at conference. Our Immediate past president, Armi Holcomb inspired us to find passion in our practice. Our now President, Katrina Bickerstaff, encourages us to reach across all generations to discover the gifts we all have to share. Our newly revised strategic plan extends out to grow our professional organization, but that will require every one s participation to share this vision and actualize its message. Beyond all the amazing lectures that taught us physiology, best practices and new processes, we were inspired to be better nurses, better self-care takers, as well as recognizing the super hero in each of us. I feel filled. So plan on coming to Indianapolis next year. Go on line this summer to apply for scholarship to support making this a reality. But in the meantime, join in, share your gifts and reach your potential at your state level. We need everyone.

4 PAGE 4 Bridget Miller RN CAPA District II, President Greetings from District #2! District #2 proudly held their annual Spring Educational workshop Essentials for PeriAnesthesia Nurses on Saturday, April 2, Although, there were a few last minute obstacles that had to be overcome in order to hold the workshop. For example, an unexpected change in venue needed to be made quickly to avoid cancellation of the workshop. With the change of venue came other unexpected details to organize in a timely manner, too. It was not an easy task to find space for 100 attendees that was suitable for speakers. But, the program committee pulled together and the day was a great success. Based upon the evaluations, attendees enjoyed and considered the day a great educational offering for the value. It was stated that overall it was an excellent workshop, speakers and the topics were awesome. Most felt attending will assist in caring for their patients and especially the legal presentation was invaluable. Also, the program committee gained constructive feedback for improvement of next year s event. District #2 is excited to plan the 2017 Spring Workshop, tentatively scheduled for Saturday, March 11, 2017, utilizing new ideas and implementing lessons learned from this year s workshop. We have already received some topic suggestions. The ground work has been started. Thank you to all RMPANA members who attended this Spring educational workshop and we look forward to seeing you next time. Your support is most appreciated. In addition, due to the success of this year s workshop, the District # 2 scholarship budget was amended. We are now offering three Retreat in the Rockies Oct 7-9, 2016 scholarships and two for the ASPAN Leadership Institute Sept 16-18, Please refer to the scholarship policy and criteria to submit your request. A copy of it was placed in the April 2 workshop folders and ed previously to all RMPANA district #2 members. Finally, the summer meeting for district #2 is in the planning stage and information will be forwarded by when the date and location are finalized. 10 EVIDENCE BASED PRACTICE Happy Summer! I hope you are all enjoying this hot weather! If you ve followed me on our past newsletters or on Facebook, you know that I like to find relevant evidenced based research outside of perianesthesia nursing. Our colleagues who publish for ASPAN do great work, but we can learn so much more and affect so many more patients if we utilize research from other disciplines as well. Let s break out of our silos! For this newsletter, I ve found an article that looks at mortality rates between Magnet and non-magnet hospitals. Interestingly enough, the research found that in comparing patients who had coronary artery bypass graft surgery, colectomy, or lower extremity bypass, the mortality rates were higher among non-magnet facilities than their Magnet counterparts. This doesn t necessarily mean that Magnet is better, though. The study also looked at hospitals who weren t Magnet at the beginning of their study and then looked at them again when they achieved their Magnet status. They found these hospitals mortality rates still didn t decrease just because they became Magnet. The study concluded that perhaps Magnet status has nothing to do with mortality rates, rather, it s the other way around. Magnet, perhaps, just recognizes excellent patient care, rather than contributes to it (Friese, Xia, Ghaferi, Birkmeyer, & Banerjee, M., 2015). I think this article also ties into the research done on mortality rates when you look at associates prepared nurses versus bachelor s prepared nurses. What do you think? I ve posted a link to the abstract of this article on our Facebook page. Please offer your feedback. It would be great to generate discussion. For more information, you can find the article by searching for the title, Hospitals In 'Magnet' Program Show Better Patient Outcomes On Mortality Measures Compared To Non -'Magnet' Hospitals or by following this link: PMC / As always, if you re interested in what the literature shows on a particular topic, please reach out to me at gabrielle.ingalsbe@uchealth.org and I will do a literature search to hopefully help you find what you re looking for! Gabrielle Ingalsbe, MS, RN, CPAN
