1 what we currently do better? We received a lot of constructive feedback and creative ideas that I believe will enhance and strengthen our chapter. And, for those of you who could not attend the business meeting, we will be sending out a chapter member opinion survey, which will also be another opportunity for members to give input. President s Message What also inspires me is this chapter s strong support for professional growth. The chapter has for a long time provided educational offerings to both members and nonmembers. They have always promoted and nurtured certification, as well as learning best practices for the care of the rehabilitation patient. What you may not see, is the work and planning it takes to put on these classes. Thank your chapter board members, they do a great job. Some upcoming events include: Inspired. As I write this message, that is what comes to mind for many reasons... I am inspired by the willingness of our chapter members to recommend solutions. Yes, give me feedback, but tag it with possible solutions even better. In January we held our Annual Business Dinner Meeting at Long Beach Memorial Hospital, where we reviewed the 2016 LA/OC Chapter activities, as well as the current state of the chapter. With those who attended, we began to brainstorm ideas for future chapter activities and focus. And what a brainstorm it was! It was like what is called Going to the Gemba from the Toyota Way by Jeffrey Liker. Essentially, best process improvement ideas come from those who do the work. In our case the chapter members! We asked our members What are ways the chapter can better meet your professional growth needs? What is the best way to keep you informed? How can we do The CRRN Certification Review Course hosted by the LA/OC ARN Chapter together with Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center. This year, it will be held March 31-April 1. (For more information and to register, go to: ). This is a great course for nurses who are planning to take the CRRN certification exam. The Potpourri will be held at Long Beach Memorial Medical Center on April 28. The Potpourri is comprised of multiple expert speakers presenting on current rehabilitation nursing topics. This year, we are focusing on informatics, technology and the electronic medical record. 1

2 And finally, I am inspired by the diversity of our chapter.and on so many levels. We have rehab nurses who work in all sorts of roles (bedside nurse, clinic nurse, nurse managers, clinical nurse specialists, researchers, professors, case managers) and who work in many different settings (acute inpatient, outpatient programming, long term care, in the community, etc.) The LA/OC Chapter has a legacy of members who have been involved at the national level for ARN, as well as at the local chapter level. As I meet more members, I am learning there is a myriad of specialty expertise within our membership, such as wound ostomy care, spinal cord injury patient care, brain injury patient care, etc. Now, that is a great resource pool, as well as a collective of rehabilitation nursing perspectives! And it is in our own back yard. As it has been shared with me there is richness in diversity. As I reflect, there is much to be inspired by. But more importantly, it is what we do with that energy that will create the impact. Together, let s create that movement to make a difference, motivate change and strengthen our nursing specialty and inspire others. It was a relaxing time with good food, good tea and of course good company. The chapter hosts two 'just for fun' social events per year and it's a great way for members to get to know each other and explore different venues in LA and Orange County. Planning is under way for our Summer Social so keep an eye open for the details and plan to join us. 5 Annual Business Meeting, January 25 th, 2017 o Stephanie Vaughn PhD, RN, CNS, CRRN was inaugurated as the ARN National President. Congratulations Stephanie. The Annual Business meeting was held January 25 th at Long Beach Memorial. This is the first year that we have offered the meeting free of charge to members and guests, a great deal for a networking opportunity and dinner. After a delicious dinner catered by Buono s Pizza, Laura Ferber called the meeting to order. After introducing the board members and their roles, she reviewed the chapter activities of The year 2016 had several highlights including: o These members of our local chapter presented posters at the conference: Dale Wong, Polly Martin, Lynn Wetherwax, Paddy Higgins, Lisa Fahey and Meredith Ross. After the retrospective of the last year, Laura addressed issues of chapter membership. She reminded members to add their chapter dues when renewing their membership with their national ARN membership renewal. She also asked for suggestions of ideas to increase chapter membership. January 27, The Annual Dinner & Business Meeting at Long Beach Memorial February CRRN Review Course at Rancho Los Amigos, a newly formatted review course taught by expert instructor Linda Jones MSN, RN, CRRN. April 23- Annual Potpourri: Integrative Medicine in the Rehabilitation Setting. July Summer Social at Tagata Restaurant (Bowers Museum), Santa Ana. September 14- Fall Education Program: The Pressure is On- Updates on the latest NPUAP prevention and treatment guidelines for pressure ulcers at Health South Tustin Rehabilitation. September 28- October 1, ARN REACH Conference, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Highlights of the conference included: Yvette Ngann then discussed the local chapter s finances. She discussed the recent adoption of conference software adopted by the board. She also said that Linda Jones has donated her stipend for the CRRN review course back to the chapter. She also informed the attendees of the current chapter account balances. Vance Shaw reported that the website continues to be improved. Recent improvements include the use of PayPal to collect payments for events, the recent addition of a vendor page so that vendors may pay for events and a device to collect payments by credit card at events. Laura then discussed member and chapter awards. She encouraged the attendees to submit applications for awards. Dale Wong, our historian wasn t present at the meeting. Laura recognized Dale for the lovely DVD of the past year s events that Dale provided for the business meeting. o Paddy Higgins MN, RN, CNS, CRRN, PHN- facilitated discussions at the Leadership Reception. Paddy also concluded her term on the ARN National Board as Board Member at Large. Thank you Paddy! Laura then discussed the upcoming events for The CRRN review course will again be taught by Linda Jones at Rancho Los Amigos on 3/31 to 4/1. The Potpourri will be held at Long Beach Memorial on 4/28. The Summer Social will be in July. The Fall Education Event will be in September. The Winter Social will be held in December. The ARN REACH Conference will be held in Seattle, Washington this year on 11/8 to 11/11. 5

6 Laura then discussed the many benefits of membership in the Association of Rehabilitation Nurses including opportunities for networking, education, promoting the profession and certification. She also explained that the ARN Bucks program has been changed to a raffle for tuition to the next chapter event. During the business meeting tuition to the CRRN Review was raffled. Paddy Higgins won the raffle but she gifted the CRRN Review tuition to Ferdinand Rojo, RN. Laura then discussed the $500 donation which is traditionally given each year by the Los Angeles/Orange County ARN chapter to a non-profit organization that helps individuals in the community. Some suggestions were made for possible recipients of the donation. The suggestion was also made that a smaller grassroots organization should be chosen for the donation, since the money would have a greater direct impact to individuals. Attendees at the business meeting were encouraged to complete the upcoming survey which will be going out soon to all members of the local chapter by . The survey will ask for input from members about the benefits that they receive from membership; what type of education programs, topics and speakers that they would like; and social events that they would like. We would like all members of the chapter to complete this survey. Laura then adjourned the meeting. It was great to see longtime friends and new friends too at the meeting. If you didn t attend the business meeting this year, please consider attending next year. It s a great time to get together for dinner with other rehabilitation nurses and give your input into planning programs for your chapter for the coming year. 6

Paddy Higgins, MN, RN, CRRN, CNS was recently appointed to the ARN Leadership Development and Nominating Committee, Vance Shaw, MSN, RN, CRRN and Paddy Higgins, MN, RN, CRRN, CNS are Rehabilitation Nursing Journal Reviewers. Vance Shaw, MSN, RN, CRRN retired from Long Beach Memorial Rehab Institute after 35+ years of service. He continues to be an active member of the LA OC ARN Board and Chapter. CRRN COURSE- MARCH 31-APRIL 1, 2017 The LA/OC ARN and Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center (NRC) are joining forces again in 2017 to offer this popular and affordable CRRN preparation course. This intensive two-day course will provide registered nurses with a detailed focus on concepts from the CRRN exam content. In addition, this course will provide test taking strategies and helpful hints to prepare the participant to be successful. The course will be held at Rancho Los Amigos NRC in Downey, California. Light breakfast and lunch will be provided on both days with vendor exhibits from our sponsors occurring on Saturday.
