1 MSPAN Mississippi Society of PeriAnesthesia Nurses HEARTBEAT Special Issue 2014 Volume 1 Issue 2 ASPAN Region 2 President s Message for the 2014 ASPAN Conference The 2014 ASPAN Conference is over now, but the training and memories will last a long time. The Vice President/ President Elect has assumed the role of ASPAN President. MSPAN extends a warm, presidential welcome to Jacque Crosson, MSN, RN, CPAN. The ASPAN conference addresses nurses concerns with establishing safe guidelines for practices queried during the past year. Some of those concerns regard patient safety issues but others address nursing practice and set the standards of care. To address these critical issues, resolutions are created and presented during the annual conference. Resolutions for : A Position Statement on Care of the Perinatal Patient; A Practice Recommendation: The Prevention of Unwanted Sedation; A Position Statement on Care of the Nurse in the Future: Minimum BSN Requirement for Practice; and : ASPAN Perianesthesia Nursing Standards, Practice Recommendations and Interpretative Statements were all approved by the Representative Assembly. Bylaws Resolutions: Bylaws Amendment to Section 7.1-Registered Office and Agent; Bylaws Amendment to Article V Board of Directors-Executive Board; Bylaws Amendment to Section 8.2-Submission of Proposed Bylaws Amendments; Bylaws Amendment to Section 3.3 Active Category Member Clerical change were all approved by the Representative Assembly. As a component member of ASPAN, we advance with their recommendations. As a component of ASPAN, it strives to advance nursing practice through education, research and adherence to standards.

2 ASPAN REGION #2 DIRECTOR Please congratulate Jennifer Kilgore as our newly elected director to the National American Society of PeriAnesthesia Nurses (ASPAN) Board! Ms. Kilgore ran against two other candidates and was voted into the national office during the formal session of the ASPAN Representative Assembly. Region # 2 includes Texas, Arkansas, Mississippi, Louisiana, Iowa, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska and Oklahoma. She has dedicated her passion for perianesthesia nurses as a MSPAN board member for a long time. Now she will serve Region # 2 with that same enthusiasm and dedication of service to the perianesthesia nurses in a much broader spectrum. We commend her for her dedication to the State of Mississippi nurses where she will continue to serve, along with the new ASPAN duties. Check them out on the website. 2 CONGRATULATIONS TO ONE OF OUR OWN ASPAN Conference Viva Las Vegas 2014 Words are inadequate to describe the energy, enthusiasm and professionalism seen at this conference. The ASPAN leaders once again awed us in their planning and delivery of the conference. We had Representative Assembly to address needed revisions, conference training classes and some very lively night events for Component Night, President s Reception, Development Night, Military Night, District Meets and Component Meets. There was costume dressing, dancing, laughing, motivational speakers and auctions. The ASPAN Shoppe and Food Train opened for purchases that benefit nurse scholarships and grants. Teleflex Corporation provided entertainment for Frank Sinatra and Elvis Presley imitators with dancing the night away while serving Tex-Mex fajitas and cheese/meat trays. If you think this is a boring conference, then you need to experience the vibrancy of these strong, professional women that are dedicated to improving patients and nurses lives. Their goals are simply to provide the best care for all perianesthesia patients, practice by research evidence and strive for the best improvements in patient care along with protecting nurses at the bedside. See you next year in San Antonio, Texas, Hyatt Regency April 26-30, Don t miss this opportunity to learn, laugh and network.

ASPAN Conference If you want to learn more about your ASPAN professional organization, receive world class training and want to have some fun doing the boot-scootin boogie with nurses like you, then this is the place for you next year. Make plans, save your money and get a buddy to go with you. The destination is about 8.5 hours (600 miles) away from Gulfport and about 12 hours (750 miles) from Southaven, MS. Driving to San Antonio is about the same distance as going to Orlando, FL. The Hyatt Regency is located on the San Antonio River Walk. San Antonio has a phenomenal base of 35 hospitals, a metropolitan population around 1.3 million and another outlying population of around 1 million. There is SeaWorld, Six Flags, Botanical Gardens, the Alamo and numerous other attractions to visit, along with receiving the best training in the world with first class speakers and professional nurses. Don t forget that vendors draw for ipads, other electronic devices and scholarships to the next ASPAN Conference. Come train, network with other nurses, laugh and have some fun. You are the one missing between the sombrero and the boots, so see you next year with your boots and sombrero doing the boot-scootin boogie! 3

Self nominations by ASPAN members are accepted by the ASPAN Nominating Committee and names do not have to be submitted by someone else. 3. After elections are completed by members of the Representative Assembly, there is a separate ballot count by three individuals selected previously by the assembly. Nationwide votes online this year= Online voting by all component members (e.g you as a MSPAN member) for all candidates in all regions, committees and ASPAN Board Members occur before the final voting process and included in the final ballot counting. A deadline date online is set for voting by component members before the annual ASPAN Conference. 5. Various ASPAN committees are available to serve on. The location to volunteer for the committees are on the ASPAN website located under About Us and then fill out the Willingness to Participate.

5 ASPAN Registration Confusion to Understanding the Process: To those attending the conference for the first time. You can do it! If you have questions, or any MSPAN board member at Tips on What to Do and How to Do It. 1. First thing: DO NOT MISS THE EARLY BIRD SPECIAL REGISTRATION! 2. Understand the basic registration is the full ASPAN member $ amount, such as this year it was $395 for the early bird and $445 for the late bird. Non-members fees are a little higher. This covers training for 3.5 days and as many hours as you can squeeze in from 7:00am - 7:00pm. 3. The classes are offered for Direct Care (DC) of patients and Indirect Care (IC). CPAN/CAPA require more Direct Care hours in the earlier years of certification reviews; this lessens as the years progress. 90 hours are required for a 3 year certification renewal. So choose classes that you need. 4. Discounts are offered for 4 or more ASPAN members registering together. So register together with others for discounts. 5. There are pre-conferences and post-conferences that you can add for extra costs. These are separate and you pay for pre-conference or post-conference or both if you need the hours. Be sure to review speakers and classes; this year you had to attend all of the full day of pre-conference classes to receive all 8 credits. Post conference class was half day, different speaker and 4.5 hours credit. Know that you can pay for one day during full conference also. 6. Build a lunch time into your schedule or take a lunch to class. 7. If you have a full day of travel, then be at the ASPAN Conference destination a day earlier to rest before you start classes or it results in a very long week. 8. Book your travel according to the conference classes you are taking like a 9:00pm flight for a day of classes ending at 5:00pm. 9. The Representative Assembly (RA) consist of the ASPAN Board of Directors and Component Presidents and Vice President/President-Elects (or designees). They meet on Sunday morning for reviewing any voting agenda items and hearing any nurse s concern on the resolutions. Any ASPAN member can address the RA for agenda item concerns or position statements. The RA break for lunch and then goes into the formal session on Sunday after lunch where only the agenda items are voted on by RA members and then carried forth by approval or disapproval votes. A great place to be for addressing an issue to the board and observing the governmental proceedings of your national board in action. Quite impressive! They take their responsibilities serious. 10. There are other events you pay extra $ for: Dream Walk (prizes included sometimes); CAPAN/ CPAN Luncheon; Development Reception (scholarship/grant benefit). 11. Free: First Timer Orientation, Component Night (Dance/Music/Food), President Reception (Dance/DJ Music/Food) & Military/International Night. 12. Bring cash as the ASPAN train and cash bars are ONLY cash. 13. Bring a sweater as it is often cold in the meeting rooms even in the hot climates. 14. Three nights are semiformal if you want to participate in the evening events but simple enough for heels, slacks and dressy top. You will see all kinds of dressing. 15.
