1 SHARP LINES Issue 2, Winter 2017 AORN RICHMOND AREA President s Message Embrace Action: Mind, Body and Spirit. This past month we celebrated Thanksgiving, so in the spirit of thanksgiving, let us be thankful for our family, friends and colleagues. We recently observed Perioperative Nurse Week, November 12 through 18, which recognizes and honors perioperative nurses across the U.S. who advocate for the safety of surgical patients. Thank you for all you do to keep our patients safe. We are also thankful for the many activities our AORN Chapter members have completed this year: Our annual golf tournament that was held at the Hunting Hawk Golf Club on September 21 st was a big success! Thank you to our Ways & Means co-chairs Bonnie Garretson and Diane Evans and their committee, for coordinating this event. We also want to thank the sponsors, players and many volunteers. This fundraising effort allows us the opportunity to support nursing education through scholarships: o On October 5, 2017, Janet Shortt and I had the honor of presenting the annual Caspari Nursing Scholarship to Karen Pak, a VCU School of Nursing student. The presentation took place during the 2017 Department of Orthopedic Surgery Caspari Lectures. o The Owens and Minor by AORN of Richmond and the AORN Foundation Educational Scholarship was awarded to Lori Coates of Richmond. At the October 16 th chapter meeting, the 2017 Mary C. Evans Scholarship Award was presented to Janice Heizer, BSN, RN, CNOR. This award was established to recognize a perioperative nurse who has made a significant contribution to the growth, progress and welfare of the Richmond AORN Chapter. Congratulations Jan and thank you for your many contributions. Our members are working together to meet the needs of the community. So far, we have: o collected 45 coats for Puritan Cleaners Coats for Kids drive o served 2 meals at The Reinhart Guest House o collected donations for Luv4Paws Rescue o o participated with the Salvation Army Angel Tree volunteered at the Celtic Festival, whose proceeds benefit local charities. Thank you Jessica Ooms and members of the Marketing committee for coordinating the many volunteer opportunities and the chapter members who have participated. The Fall VCORN Meeting was held in Lynchburg on November 4, Great educational sessions were offered and four contact hours were provided. The Richmond AORN Chapter will host the VCORN meeting in the Fall of We are thankful for the Program/ Education Committee members who have already begun planning for this event. Finally, we are thankful to be a part of our perioperative community and to be surrounded by members and leaders who contribute their insight, wisdom and efforts. Let us continue to Embrace Action as we move into the New Year. I wish you all a wonderful Holiday season. The poster will be presented at the 2018 AORN Global Surgical Conference & Expo by Debbie Bartol. Legislative Committee Report The VNA Central Virginia Nurses Legislative Reception held on October 17, 2017 was very well attended. Ten of our members including Bonnie Vencill, Nicole Meredith, Janet Wingfield, Jan Heizer, Janet Shortt, Cathy Sweeney, Anne Bliss, Debbie Bartol, Carla Beattie, and Debbie Sherrod participated. It was encouraging to see women and nurses joining the political arena and running for general assembly seats. We hope each of the members took time to VOTE! The VNA sponsored The Legislative Summit on November 14, 2017 at the John Marshall Ballrooms. Six contact hours were awarded for completion of the event. Please remember to forward pictures taken from your facility celebrating PNW to The next AORN legislative advocacy event will be National Time Out Day - date to be determined. If you are interested in getting more involved legislatively, AORN has a monthly National Legislative Forum conference call on the third Monday of each month that is recorded. 5 Upcoming Donation Drives & Volunteer Activities Donation Drive for ASK Childhood Cancer Foundation: This organization doesn t currently have a volunteer activity for us, but they would like some donations. We are collecting small items for treasure boxes for the children. Think of something fun that you would like to pick out as a treasure if you were a child. Here are some examples of things that you can donate: deck of cards, gas or gift cards, Slinky, colored pencils, stickers, coloring books, small stuffed animals, or Matchbox cars. Please bring the items to the January chapter meeting. Volunteer at the Masonic Home of Virginia: 4 th or 5 th week in January (date to be determined) We want to show some love to the residents of this nursing home by singing, participating in arts & crafts or playing games. There will be more information & a sign-up sheet at the January chapter meeting. Serve a meal at the Reinhart Guest House: Monday Feb. 26, Tuesday Feb. 27 and/or Wednesday Feb. 28 (depending on the amount of people interested in volunteering). This is always a fun and easy volunteer event & that s why we keep doing it. Donation Drive for CARITAS: We plan to volunteer at the Furniture Bank in April, but we also want to contribute donations to this wonderful organization. They collect a wide variety of items for people that have transitioned to permeant housing. They are always in need of pots and pans, so the Marketing committee has decided to conduct a pots & pans drive in the months of February and March. Please bring these items (gently used or brand new) to the chapter meetings and they will be donated when we volunteer the following month. Volunteer at CARITAS: Saturday April 7, 9am-12pm: Transform a Warehouse into a Showroom Volunteer tasks may include unloading donation trucks of furniture and household items, sorting donations, matching and folding linens, sorting dishes, and organizing the Furniture Bank, to make it easily shoppable for clients exiting homelessness and moving into their first home. If you volunteer, remember to dress in layers (the warehouse is not temperature controlled & usually quite cold). Wear closed toe shoes and bring work gloves and water. There are currently no volunteer activities scheduled for March. The Marketing Committee is working hard to bring you more activities and will keep you updated. Thank you everyone that volunteered or made donations in We did a wonderful job collecting for the Luv4Pawz Rescue and the Coats for Kids drive with Puritan cleaners. We donated a car load of items to the animal rescue and collected 45 coats for adults and children. Everyone was so appreciative of our efforts. Keep up the good work showing love to our community!
