2 Message From ASPAN Region 2 Director It seems to me, that winter has a grip on most of us, regardless of which part of the country we live. Here in Overland Park, we still have about 6 inches of snow on the ground and with the frigid temperatures hovering in the teens; it is not going to melt anytime soon. I love winter most days, mainly because the beauty of it is, that we are closer to spring. With spring comes ASPAN s 33rd National Conference in beautiful Las Vegas. I hope you are making plans to attend this annual conference! It is a time to renew friendships, make new ones, and increase your perianesthesia knowledge base by attending the wonderful concurrent educational sessions being offered. One very important event that occurs on Sunday April 27th is that President Twilla Shrout will convene ASPAN s Representative Assembly. The RA as it is called, is open to all ASPAN members who are curious or interested to know more about how ASPAN conducts its business. It is also where ASPAN will hold its annual election of Officers and Board members including Nominating Committee members. Your component leaders and delegates to the Representative Assembly need your input on who they will be voting for so it is imperative that all component members go online and send their feedback on the candidates (it s the way you vote). This feedback will be tallied at the national office and sent back to your RA delegates to guide them in their official vote during the RA convention. It is extra important for the participation of the Region 2 component members to send their feedback because this year, we are electing the Region 2 Director. We have 3 well qualified candidates for Regional Director so please take the time to read the bios on the ASPAN website and send in your feedback to the national office. It is important to remember that this elected position, once seated on the ASPAN Board, not only will vote for Region 2 issues, but also vote on issues that will affect the entire ASPAN membership. It has been an honor to serve as your Region 2 Director these past 4 years. 2 I have met more people around our Midwest Region and thus learned about best practices in our region. It has been a pleasure to present ASPAN to new and seasoned perianesthesia nurses as I traveled as far north in Nebraska and all the way south in Mississippi. I will continue my excellent journey in ASPAN as I make a run for Vice President/ President elect. I want to make sure that Region 2 is in good hands so use your feedback well. Please keep in touch. I am always at your service for anything related to ASPAN. On a personal note, I will cherish the friendships I have made these past 4 years as your Region 2 Director. Updated goals for Meeting adjourned at 1130 Surgical Corrections of Skeletal & Soft Tissue Deformities of the Face & Neck Diagnosis, Treatment, Planning, Surgical Correction, & Perioperative Care On Saturday January 25 NAPAN hosted an educational meeting at the Nebraska Orthopedic Medical Building. The topic was Surgical Correction of Skeletal & Soft Tissue Deformities of the Face & Neck: Diagnosis, Treatment Planning, Surgical Correction & Perioperative Care. The speaker was Dr Bruce S. Kuhn, MD, DDS. It was a very interesting and informative presentation. Dr Kuhn was very generous with his time and information. Also everyone who attended received a book that contained some of his patients before and after photos along with the corrections that were made. He was a very entertaining speaker, keeping us alert with his occasional inserts of humorous videos. Also at the meeting NAPAN President Bernie Larsen drew names for door prizes of PANAW week items, over half of the attendees won a prize. A breakfast of Egg Casserole, fruit, bagels, juice and coffee was also provided. Three CEU s were awarded for attendance. IMAGE Regional Blocks: From Head to Toe On Saturday February 22, NAPAN held an educational program at Nebraska Orthopedic Hospital on Regional Blocks: From Head to Toe. Our speaker was anesthesiologist Dr Robert Zatechka from Nebraska Orthopedic Hospital. Dr Zatechka was very informative and fun to listen to as well. We learned about the new trends in regional anesthesia. We had over fifty attendees. Three contact hours where awarded for this program. Nurses that attended where provided with breakfast of an egg casserole, fruit salad, bagels, juice and coffee. A $50 NAPAN scholarship was also awarded! Aromatherapy As I network with other PACU/Peri Op nurses around the state, I am finding that many effective antiemetics are missing from our pharmacies. This frustrates me so much as my co workers and I strive to treat our patients with the most effective medications to rescue them from nausea and vomiting. Using multimodal pain meds is one way to decrease the incidence of post op nausea and vomiting, but as science shows us, some patients are just prone to being nauseated after general anesthesia. The need for multimodal treatment of nausea and vomiting is clearly present. With this need in mind, I was pleased to read the article in the February 2014 edition of the Journal of Perianesthesia Nursing. The article is titled A Prospective Randomized Study of the Effectiveness of Aromatherapy for Relief of Postoperative Nausea and Vomiting. The authors Nancy S. Hodge, RN, MSN, BSN, ACNS- BC, Mary S. McCarthy, RN, PhD, MN, BSN and Roslyn M. Pierce, BA did a study using aromatherapy on 121 patients who were experiencing nausea and vomiting after surgery. It is encouraging to note that the conclusion of the study was positive for the use of aromatherapy as an effective treatment for postoperative nausea. As nurses continue to see needs and take the time and energy to conduct research, we will improve the care we extend to our patients. With careful study of research conducted by our nurses at the bedside, we will have more tools to extract evidence based treatments. I want to encourage all of my co nurses to look at the research and conduct a positive change in your work place. Judy Mink BSN, RN, CPAN Past President and Co-Editor 3
4 Celebrating Perianesthethesia Nurses Week 2014 February 3rd to 9th 2014 was a week Lakeside Procedure Center nurses at Alegent Creighton Lakeside Hospital in Omaha enjoyed celebrating. The activities started on Monday. When the nurses arrived at work they found thank-you flyers on their lockers from our director Barb Ricci and Team Leads Gina Semins and Pam Wilder. It was a special recognition and appreciation of our perianesthesia nurses for their knowledge, skills and vital role they bring to our specialty unit. We celebrated with cake that was shared with our entire unit including volunteers, surgeons, anesthesia, OR nurses and techs, housekeeping, lab and radiology. We continued the week with picture taking, games, prizes and ended with a delicious pot luck on Friday. The week inspired team spirit and camaraderie among our staff. The national theme of PANAW week Caring Every Step of the Way is a theme we all practice every day with our patients, families and coworkers. I hope everyone had a great week and best wishes for a great year! Carolyn Carr RN CPAN CAPA Secretary 4
5 ASPAN Clinical Practice Questions Each Friday all Clinical Practice questions that are received by ASPAN s National office are assigned to members of ASPAN s Clinical Practice Committee. I am one of the members of this committee. There are many members of this committee so the work load is spread out, so I receive about two questions per month. After I receive my questions, I research them, with the help of ASPAN s Perianesthesia Nursing: Standards, Practice Recommendations and Interpretive Statements and the internet. Then I the results of my research to the person who sent in the question along with Twilla Shrout, ASPAN s President, Jacque Crosson, ASPAN s Vice President, Susan Russell the Director of the Clinical Practice Committee and Kate Gatt, who is my team leader on the committee. It is very rewarding and increases your understanding of the ASPAN Standards. You too could be on this committee by submitting a Willingness-to-Participate form that is available on ASPAN s website. I am including a response that I sent out last year. Dear Cidalia, Phyliss Bolton RN, CPAN Editor-In-Chief Sample Clinical Practice Question My name is Phyliss Bolton and I am a member of the ASPAN Clinical Practice Committee. It is my privilege to respond to the question you submitted on 03/24/2013. I noticed that you are an ASPAN member and thank you for supporting your professional organization. What s inside this issue: Please define the staffing requirements for Phase I in regards to the critical elements. Does the nurse only have one patient for that critical elements portion? Please discuss the difference. Answer(s): According to The Standards of Perianesthesia Nursing, Practice Recommendation 1, New admissions should be assigned so that the nurse can devote his/ her attention to the care of that admission until critical elements are met. Critical elements can be defined as: Report has been received from the anesthesia care provider, questions answered and the transfer of care has taken place Patient has a stable/secure airway Initial assessment is complete Patient is hemodynamically stable Patient is free from agitation, restlessness, combative behaviors Yes, the nurse should only have that one patient during the critical elements portion, which might last only a short time. In the PACU where I work, we all work together to help get a new patient settled and help watch over another patient that nurse might have until she is able to devote attention to both patients. I hope that this information will assist you achieving and promoting safe patient care and evidence-based practice in your facility. Thank you for contacting the ASPAN Clinical Practice Committee. Let us know if we can assist you with other practice issues. Cordially, Phyliss Bolton RN CPAN ASPAN Clinical Practice Committee **Have a question?
