Submitted by: Tara Hinnenkamp, Treasurer In January the board hosted a retreat to help mentor and welcome new board members. We spent a majority of the day finalizing strategic plans and planning events for our members for On January 31st, we hosted a pizza and election party to help our members vote for current national board leaders. We also held an educational session created by board members who attended ONS Congress last year. CEU s were given for those who attended. In March we held a board meeting and finalized plans for our Connecting & Caring Event coming up on Tuesday, May 2nd. Scholarship : Who needs some cash?! Submitted by: Teagen Lambert, President Elect Are you new to ONS? Are you advancing your nursing degree? Do you want to attend a conference? If you answered yes to any of these questions you are in the right spot! You could qualify for a scholarship from ONS! Happy Spring! I found this nursing requirements post quite entertaining; especially as I was reviewing all of the requirements of the position of a treasurer... I guess we nurses wear many hats! From a financial standpoint, the WCMONS continues to be doing well. The current balance is roughly $17,750 with $7,000 of that secured in a savings account. We have many great events planned throughout this year to help best support you. The budget has numerous scholarship opportunities available, as listed above, so be sure to check out which one you may qualify for and submit your application! I hope your 2017 is off to a great start and I look forward to the year ahead! There are many ONS scholarship opportunities for multiple different things like: ONS Congress attendance, nursing school scholarship, continuing education scholarship and even a general scholarship that can be used for things like membership reimbursement! Where do I find out more? The applications are found online, they are easy to complete and can be submitted by mail or . We want to encourage each and everyone of you to apply! To find the scholarship applications: Go to: wcminnesota.vc.ons.org/ resources log in and select the correct scholarship to apply for!
3 Volume 1, Issue 1 Page 3 Nominating : We need YOU! Submitted by: Carol Primus, Nominating Chair Have you ever wondered why our chapter hosts a special event? Do you have some GREAT ideas for new chapter events? Becoming a board member is an opportunity to bring your ideas forward and to utilize your leadership skills. We will have 6 positions open for reelection this fall. Voting will take place in September and the elected officers are sworn in at our November event. Now is a great time to Inquire about if this would be a great fit for you! Fun Fact Submitted by: Sara Maciej, Secretary Positions that are up for election include: --Program Chair- This is for two different members. Responsibilities include establishing meeting dates, times, and location. Educational needs are assessed and utilized in planning programming for the year. --Treasurer- Responsibilities include developing an annual budget based on chapter history and managing financial records for the chapter. --Membership Chair- Responsibilities include promoting initial and renewal membership in the chapter and the national ONS along with maintaining records and reports in accordance with ONS standards. --Nominating Chair- Responsibilities include finding candidates for open officer positions along with the election process and notifying the new officers. --Social Media Chair- Responsibilities include using Facebook and other social media as appropriate to keep membership informed of ONS events. Each board member has particular duties, but they are not alone. There is a great cooperative effort among the board to work together to get the job done. Here is an opportunity to join a great team. Feel free to contact me or any one of the board members with questions about what a particular position involves. Did you know? Supported by the American Nurses Association and American Cancer Society, ONS traces its roots to the first National Cancer Nursing Research Conference in A small group of oncology nurses met to find a national organization to support their profession. ONS began its official incorporation in 1975 and now has grown to 225 local chapters! Membership : What we do for you! Submitted by: Jill Libbesmeier, Membership Chair Did you know that for each meeting/event you come to you can get closer to earning yourself a prize? The best part is all you have to do is to show up! If you bring a friend it helps you as well! When you attend all you need to do is punch your card (available at the events) and when you get to a prize point you can choose your prize! When your card is full you will be entered into a drawing for even bigger prizes. You may have received a post card letting you know you are due to renew your membership or thanking your for renewing your membership. These are just something we thought would be helpful and also fun to get some mail! We are also sending out packets to new members to welcome them to the chapter and encourage attendance at events. If you have any feedback on any of these things we would love to hear it!

Humerous Section Submitted by: Sara Maciej, Secretary I had to take my son to hospital after he swallowed ten quarters. He was rushed to surgery. After half an hour I saw a nurse so I asked her how he was. She said, "There's no change yet." When I went to get my vaccinations the young nurse told me she was very nervous as it was her first time. I told her to give it her best shot. Reminder to all: Nurses dispense comfort, compassion, and caring without even a prescription Val Saintsbury
