3 To recap 2012, we have met most of the strategic goals that we formulate at the beginning of each new year and later evaluate in our Annual Report to ONS. Here is a brief review: For the ONS Knowledge Pillar: 1) Kerri Dalton and the Board offered chapter programs and a regional program with CEU s and topics appropriate for APN s; 2) Marty Polovich helped us webcast one program to those who could not attend; 3) We acknowledged new members and member accomplishments at meetings; 4) We provided opportunities for nursing students to participate in NCTONS activities; 5) We fostered memberships in interdisciplinary organizations for cancer care by listing in the 2012 Chapter Excellence Award application what members are doing in these areas and we collaborated with Cornucopia Cancer Support For the Leadership Pillar: 1) We appointed Deborah Allen as Leadership Development Coordinator in order to formalize access to chapter leaders who might serve as mentors for members seeking to advance in the chapter, or their field. 2) We encouraged members to seek local and national leadership roles; and we appointed Lori Laczko as Awards Coordinator to help us identify opportunities. As a result, we nominated members for special awards and for OCN and AOCN of the Year awards; and, we are also competing for a third ONS chapter Excellence Award! 3) In 2010, we felt our weakest area was community involvement. Since then, Mary Dunn has not only managed Nominating chairperson responsibilities, she also coordinated Komen Runs, American Lung Association activities, Kaps for Kids, and a blood drive in collaboration with the UNC SON-- to name a few community activities showcasing CHAPTER involvement. 4) Amy Boswell, Membership Chair, organized a marketing list and contacted workplaces to invite oncology nurses in our catchment area to join NCTONS and to attend our regional program; 5) We featured NCTONS members as speakers at several chapter meetings and the regional program; 6) We supported oncology review courses and chemo/bio trainers by publicizing their activities and by acknowledging that many NCTONS members were teaching these courses. Since many of these courses reside in the medical
4 centers, we decided against sponsoring courses; however, we did give 4 large awards for members to attend national conferences. 7) Kristi Wiggins and Christina Davis coordinated our Virtual Community website for posting jobs, publishing student papers, and posted events and programs. Christina Davis, chapter secretary, managed communications to members; she is also converting records to electronic format. 8) Our chapter sponsored several programs dealing with advocacy issues and political interface: Healthcare Reform, and Drug Shortages, bringing in nationally known speakers. 9) We invited several of the unelected members to participate in leadership of the chapter, and continue to subscribe to this way of incorporating those who step up For the Quality Pillar: 1) We collaborated with HPNA/APHON and Cornucopia Cancer Support Center on two separate programs this year; 2) We made a special effort to encourage members to vote in ONCC and ONS elections, again trying for an award for the highest percentage of members voting in an ONS election. We did not win that one. Locally, we urged action on several political issues, and appreciated the leadership of Deborah Allen to keep us abreast of state issues. Portia Mitchell, Political Liaison chair represented us as our NCNA associate. For the Technology Pillar: We utilized the VC website; we did not need to appoint an IT nurse to help us; we did start converting NCTONS records to electronic format. We will carry over investigating Facebook options, providing monies for online CEU offerings, and investigating our role in international oncology nursing. As we move into 2013, the newly elected Board members will join those staying on another year. We will again revise our strategic plan for NCTONS and try to stay on track as one of the leading large chapters of ONS. I am so pleased to have been associated with such a committed Board and such a dynamic chapter that continuously improves and strives to produce leaders, to make a difference in the community as a chapter as well as through its individual members, and to provide stimulating programs and opportunities for its members. Thank You for allowing me to be your President this year. Best Regards to All, Faye McNaull

6 ! Winners! Ashley Leak & Kathy Trotter NCTONS Connections Scholarships Advanced Practice Nurses and Nurse Scientists Connecting to Improve Patient Outcomes I recently attended the Connections: Advancing Care through Science Conference in Phoenix, Arizona through the support of a TONS Congress Scholarship. This was the first year that a conference was designed for advanced practice nurses and nurse scientists, and it focused on practice changes, as well as the improvement of patient outcomes from a translational science lens. Six hundred attendees participated in dynamic discussions about improving cancer care for the patient and caregivers. One noteworthy session that I wanted to share was on Publication Strategies for Building Your Research Portfolio. Anne Katz, PhD, RN, and editor of the Oncology Nursing Forum, presented on ways to insure that the message (findings), audience (targeted group), and journal (how often they publish) are congruent. Our TONS member, Deborah Mayer, PhD, RN, AOCN, FAAN is Editor of Clinical Journal of Oncology Nursing and is another great resource for those interested in writing. Some key points from Katz's presentation:! Do not limit yourself to submitting to nursing and oncology journals only! Online journals are not always quicker and better. Open access journals are costly. Be cautious.! Query the editor (For example: "Dear Dr. Katz, My colleagues and I just completed a study on X. We are interested in submitting to ONF. Would this be of interest to ONF? Thanks for considering.")! Follow the instructions for authors, note deadlines for when items are due, expect revisions, and seek non-expert opinion Are you considering submitting a paper to a journal? If so, consider what Dr. Katz s suggestions. Hope you are able to attend the next ONS Connections meeting in 2013! I was able to make new collaborations with nurses who have interests similar to mine and if you attend, you will too! Sincerely, Ashley Leak PhD, RN-BC, OCN
7 Dear Triangle ONS Chapter Scholarship Committee: Many thanks to the TONS chapter for supporting me to attend the inaugural ONS Advancing Care Through Science conference! It was a high quality, scientific conference which particularly inspired me to learn about others translating evidence into practice and sharing clinical innovations. I was also able to network with oncology nurses both in general events and sessions and at the Special Interest Group (SIG) meeting of about 25 attendees interested specifically in survivorship. Finally, I was able to offer a podium presentation on Saturday called Evaluation of a breast cancer survivorship clinic: Patient program evaluation and financial analysis. This summarized my work looking at survivors impressions of a shared medical appointment model for their follow up medical care, with over 98% being pleased with the attention and style of the model. Financially, it showed a positive impact on the cancer center since it opened up the medical oncologist for newly diagnosed patients, and provided community awareness about a quality program. Specific sessions I attended focused primarily on breast cancer issues. Topics such as the cultural differences in women s perceptions of their cognitive changes post chemotherapy, and the benefit of a 12-session program specifically for breast cancer survivors to handle their issues and concerns plus a focus on preventive lifestyle changes were interesting sessions. The post treatment sessions reinforced the facilitative style of the group visit model I use in clinic, but also gave me some more ideas on content for sessions. And who knew you could conduct research to monitor patient s taking their oral medication by supplying them with a special pill bottle lid that records each time the lid is opened? Adherence to medication regime has always been an issue for patients and their clinicians, and not surprisingly, it was found that gradually, over time, adherence falls, presumably as the fear of cancer recurrence fades and impact of financial issues grows. There were not a lot of satellite events to report about. The exhibit hall was bright and large. Raffles were available from ONS as well as books (I bought one). I attended an encouraging session in the writer s lounge that was held by the editors of CJON and Oncology Nurses Forum. They discussed how to offer a manuscript, and offered a mentoring program for those who may want to give writing a try. They were particularly encouraging of nurses who have good clinical ideas, but simply have not gotten the word out via publication. Thank you again for support to attend the conference. I found it informative and a good opportunity to network with Advanced Practice Providers, translational scientists like myself, as well as researchers. Sincerely, Kathy Trotter, DNP, CNM, FNP
