1 The #1 Stop For Your Employment Needs! NEWSLETTER The Mobile One-Stop Assists New Spring 2017 A publication of the One-Stop Job Market Partners Association. Edited by Department of Labor, Licensing & Regulation staff in Salisbury, Maryland. INSIDE THIS ISSUE: Mobile One-Stop 1 Job Market Quarterly Activities 2 Customers Served Charts 3 Customers Served Tables 4-5 Ocean City Job Fair 6 Welcome New Staff 7 Shore Transit 8 Telamon 9 M4 Reactor 10 Maryland Apprenticeship 11 Maryland Business Works 12 Labor Force, Demographic and Jobs Overview Customer Satisfaction Surveys 18 Business With Off-Site Hiring Event By: Robert Hendricks The Mobile One-Stop participated in two offsite hiring events with the newly built Royal Farms, one in Berlin on Oct 6, 2016 and one in Salisbury on March 27, There were about 16 applicants in Berlin and 23 in Salisbury. After filling out the on-line applications on the mobile, they then went directly into the new store for an interview. Many were offered a job immediately after their interview! The Salisbury event was unique in that it was a collaboration effort between the Lower Shore Workforce Alliance and the Upper Shore Workforce Investment Board. While our mobile was delayed in getting the roof repaired, we reached out to the Upper Shore for assistance. They readily sent down their mobile and were met at the event to assist. We like to think of the two neighboring Workforce Investment Boards working together as a Shore Thing. 7 One-Stop Quarterly Review DLLR Welcomes New Staff Francisco Vega started as a Job Service Specialist with the Division of Workforce Development in November of He resides on the beautiful Eastern Shore of Maryland with his wife, daughter, and their English bulldog. They live on a small farmette just steps away from the Indian Creek which flows into the Choptank River. Francisco has over 11 years of experience and a degree in Business Administration with a passion for customer service and business ventures. His background in business and customer service creates an exceptional experience for his clients and adds a wealth of knowledge to the organization. His role in Business Services presented the opportunity to create the new e-flyer Jobs of the Week with the expectation of filling much needed positions. This is a win-win for both the employer and future employees. In his spare time, he is an avid outdoorsman. He enjoys boating, fishing, kayaking, skeet shooting, or simply taking his family for a day on the beach. His favorite time is spending Sundays with his family watching football and cooking on the grill. GO RAVENS!!! This is a sample of the e-flyer Jobs of the Week. Stop by the MWE Resource Lab to pick up a copy. Page 7

8 Shore Transit Continues Fleet Upgrades Submitted by: Brad Bellacicco, Director, Shore Transit Division Shore Transit Division of the Tri-County Council continues its efforts to both modernize its fleet of buses and provide environmentally responsible service. Early this year our first five, new, medium-sized buses arrived. They are gasoline- fueled, 36 feet long and seat 28 people plus two wheel chair tie-down spaces. Currently, Shore Transit is converting the buses to also operate on propane. The buses are traveling to Wilmington, Delaware for the one week conversion under a contract with Sharp Energy. To support our growing, green-fueled fleet of 19 vehicles, last week two additional thousand gallon propane tanks were added to the Shore Transit fuel station. Shore Transit is the only Maryland locally operated public transportation system to use dual-fuel vehicles. For more information on Shore Transit services, visit Page 8

10 M4Reactor Starts Dislocated Worker Program Submitted by: Kevin Justice M4Reactor, the shore s only community makerspace is expanding their programming to provide technical job skills training for the unemployed. There have already been 2 classes run including an Introduction to CNC Machining and 3D CAD/3D Printing. Both of these courses included two days of intensive soft skills training where students learned effective resume and interviewing techniques and strategies to get and keep a job. Of the first two courses that included 13 students, one has had 2 job offers and started working at one, 4 others have had part time work, and one has been doing contracting work and has been promised a job offer. M4Reactor is currently in development on other courses. M4Reactor has partnered with Wor-Wic and Quality Staffing Services for these specific courses. QSS has handled individual screening and prequalification plus working with students for job placement after their training. Wor-Wic is managing course operations and has worked to get M4Reactor s courses certified by the MD Department of Education. There are roughly 4,000 unemployed individuals just in Wicomico County. At the same time there are roughly 4,000 job openings. We know there are more reasons than just training to bridge this gap but M4Reactor s goal is to reduce unemployment by providing technical training not available anywhere else, said Kevin Justice, Executive Director of M4Reactor. M4Reactor has a wide array of programs and services with the underlying goal of teaching people how to make things. From membership to their Crafts to Craftsmanship Education Series and Summer of Steam programs for youth, there s something for everyone. To learn more about M4Reactor, check out their website at M4Reactor.org or contact Kevin Justice at (443) Make sure to reach out if you are interested in how your organization can partner with us to bring these services to your members.
