12 MEMORANDUM Date: February 1, 2013 To: CC: River Valley Workforce Investment Board Jobs Committee From: Renee Thompson Re: On-the-Job Training (OJT) Employer outreach efforts are in full swing through our collaboration with the Alliance for Illinois Manufacturing (AIM). Partnerships have been ignited with the local Chambers of Commerce and Economic Development groups which have yielded 10 job opportunities with the following local employers: J. Renee Elgin H. A. Phillips & Co. DeKalb Bison Gear & Engineering Corp St. Charles J.C. Schultz FlagSource Enterprises, Inc. Batavia Elgin Chamber of Commerce Elgin In addition, our participant talent pool was notified of other job opportunities outside of Kane, Kendall and DeKalb through employer partnerships developed by AIM. Kane County is pleased to announce that candidate referrals to jobs have totaled 26 through January with one successful placement occurring in DeKalb (see attached profile). Our clients have taken notice of our intensive focus on employment and feel it has enhanced their job search process and provided an advantage in their pursuit of employment opportunities. We will continue to keep you apprised of our progress under the On-the-Job Training Initiative. In the meantime, please don t hesitate to let me know if you have any questions. Thank you!
13 On-the-Job Training Initiative Placement Profile David, DeKalb Resident Dislocated Worker Employer: H.A. Philips & Co. in DeKalb Hire Date: January 28, 2013 Position: Materials Assistant David was a union excavator/machine operator for 20 years until his layoff in June Since his layoff, David has had difficulty obtaining gainful employment in today s competitive job market with his current skill set despite his outgoing personality and strong work ethic. Though David is familiar with a shop environment, most of his experience has been with outdoor work sites on heavy equipment and therefore, he has not been qualified to find work in the area of manufacturing the industry he feels most aligns with his skill set. Through the OJT program, H.A. Phillips has hired David and will receive $6,760 to offset the training costs required to supply David with the necessary industry skills to be successful as a Materials Assistant. David will be trained to read blueprints, size materials, operate saws and torches, and sandblast materials. With his positive attitude and attention to detail, David will certainly have a positive future in a new industry with H.A. Phillips. Since 1928, H. A. Phillips & Co. has designed and manufactured ammonia refrigeration controls for industrial refrigeration applications worldwide. H.A. Phillips & Co. is a single-source manufacturer and supplier of modulating control solutions for industrial refrigeration systems. Their product lines include float valves, electronic and pressure regulating valves, ASME code pressure vessels, recirculation systems and accessory components. They are very excited about the newly established relationship with the WIA Program and expect to continue to draw from the program s pipeline of job-seekers to meet their hiring needs throughout the remainder of this calendar year.
