6 Southeast Current Initiatives The Training Grounds will open at the Racine County Workforce Solutions site this May. The Training Grounds is a coffee shop that will provide work experience opportunities for customers with no or limited work experience. We intend to provide work experience focused on exceptional customer service for individuals from a wide spectrum of programs including: WIOA, DVR, juvenile and adult offenders, transitional job and others. Boot Camps that are offered: CDL, CNC, TeleCom, and Logistics 6

8 Demographics Unemployment Rate (Feb.) 6.2% In Milwaukee County, 10.5% (78,076) of County residents were considered long-term unemployed as were 13.1% (59,680) of City of Milwaukee residents. The unemployment rate in some zip codes in the City of Milwaukee was as high as 28.7% (53206). 8

11 Current Initiatives Midwest Urban Strategies: Employ Milwaukee, Inc. has organized and convenes 11 urban workforce boards from throughout the Midwest to share best practices and collaborate together to address issues that are unique to urban communities. A subset of this consortium (Milwaukee, St. Louis, Detroit) successfully competed for a $3MM American Apprenticeship award. American Apprenticeship: Funding to increase the number of Registered Apprenticeship programs and the number of apprentices in construction, manufacturing, health care, IT, financial services, and hospitality. Uplift MKE: A sector-based intermediary model for recruiting and preparing unemployed and underemployed individuals for employment opportunities in the end-use jobs that are expected to be a part of Milwaukee s downtown boom. Coordinating Council: Employ Milwaukee convenes a broad cross section of community-based organizations, training providers, human service agencies, and government departments to focus on developing the regions human capital. 15 Current Initiatives employment NOW! Program: Our youth program has been completely rebranded to attract 18 to 24 year olds who no longer consider themselves youth. The program has a new name, a new look, and is being marketed on a larger scale. Nontraditional recruitment efforts are being made with employers (for candidates they don t hire) and through staffing agencies, just to name a couple. employment NOW! is designed to have a greater emphasis on the development of participants as employees and as the future workforce. InterviewStream: The WOW Workforce Development Board is currently in the process of implementing InterviewStream with employers. InterviewStream is a tool that will give employers the ability to interview from anywhere at any time, using just a web cam. Job seekers can practice their interviews from the Center or their smart phone and then submit their interview directly to the employer. Case Managers will be able to provide instant feedback to clients to assist them with interview preparation. 15

19 Current Initiatives Amplify IT collaborative IT effort in the Oshkosh, WI area with the goal to amplify the awareness of opportunities surrounding all aspects of I.T. in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Oshkosh manufacturing collaborative workgroup partner with Chamber and community leaders to identify areas of opportunity to increase the awareness of manufacturing careers. Fox Valley Healthcare Alliance - The Fox Valley Healthcare Alliance (FVHCA) is a dynamic partnership between healthcare agencies, educational institutions, workforce development, public health, and other agencies who are all interested in improving the state of the healthcare workforce in a seven county region of northeast Wisconsin. Northeast WI Manufacturing Alliance collaborate with BAWDB on promotion of manufacturing careers in the New North region. Ignite! promote entrepreneurship in the Fond du Lac area. Forward Fond du Lac community-wide initiative to promote career opportunities 19

23 Current Initiatives Bay Area WDB is implementing a major initiative to connect WIOA Youth services to the county-based foster care system to better engage Youth Aging Out of Foster Care with career planning, work experience, and postsecondary training to promote independence, self-sufficiency, and career success. The NEW Manufacturing Alliance recently completed its second group of Get Real Math videos with accompanying lesson plays to present real life math problems in their companies for middle school students. NEWMA continues to develop innovative outreach strategies to engage K-12 students with careers in the manufacturing sector. Bay Area WDB continues to build on 18 years of experience in offender reentry initiatives with the Windows to Work program at the Oshkosh Correctional Institution and the Steps to Success program at the Taycheedah women s prison. 23
24 Demographics Unemployment Rate (Feb.) 6.3% Challenges: The February 2016 unemployment rate in the region ranged from a low of 5.0% (Marathon County) to a high of 9.6% (Adams County). Unemployment in the rural, northern counties of the region is above the state average Job Growth: 7.35 percent, in the region between 2012 and The region will also experience a high number of replacement/retirements over the ten year period due to an aging workforce. 24
