Other ways to donate, support, or volunteer You can donate to Local First Lexington by mailing a check to the address listed in our profile. In kind donations of print material, promotional material, or technology would also be very useful. We also need volunteers to at community engagement events like the Night Market, Farmers Market, and other festivals that we will be attending. 2
Statements & Search Criteria Statements Mission Statement Local First Lexington was created to ignite an awareness of the value that independent local businesses add to our economy and culture. Our mission is to educate the public of greater Lexington about the positive effects: economic, civic, environmental, and cultural - of patronizing local independent businesses. Background Statement Local First Lexington began in 2008 as an alliance of locally owned business. Since then, Local First Lexington has established the practices of printing annual member business directories, hosting member mixers, and finding opportunities to engage the community. The organization is now taking a harder look at what we can do to find and activate the community members who already share our values. By doing so, we hope to spread the awareness of the practice of buying local to a greater segment of the population. Impact Statement Top 3 accomplishments of 2015:1) Facilitated outstanding networking events for member businesses.2) Created useful business directory and map for distribution during the Breeders Cup.3) Replaced interim Director with a new long term Director. Top 5 goals for 2016:1) Implement new membership level for individuals. This program is called the "Localist" program, and will be used to further engage the community in "buy local" activities and campaigns.2) Attend as many community festivals and markets as possible in order to educate the public, grow the "Localist" program, and represent the interest of member businesses.3) Develop "Buy Local" workshops to further educate member businesses, "Localists", board members, and volunteers about how they can become more impactful on the local economy.4) Acquire an intern to help develop and run programs.5) Launch our new website and member management system. Needs Statement 1) We will be attending a lot of events that require us to have a tent/booth. It is important to stand out at these events in order to get people interested in your booth and message. We have tentative plans/dreams to acquire a branded tent, and a backlit wooden CNC wall that will mount a TV playing a video of "Buy Local" Factoids, information about Local First Lexington, and information about member businesses. This will attract attention from far away, and enable people to learn about LFL by watching the screen if they out of earshot. The estimated cost of these materials is $2,000. 2) We need volunteers to help run the booths at community engagement events. Our board members and Director can only do so many of these events.3) Our biggest expense of the year is redoing our website to correct some technology problems that were costing us money. We need $3,000 to offset the cost of the web development and design, which was all done by locals. 3
CEO/Executive Director Statement I began working with Local First Lexington in vember of I am thrilled to be able to contribute to an organization whose values and goals were already in alignment with my goals and values. I am the type of person who takes a lot of pride in the independent businesses in Lexington, and enjoy introducing my friends to these places. I studied Sociology at Georgetown College and have understood for a long time that the movement toward localization is an important movement for local economies, as well as for the environment. In a time where online shopping is incredibly convenient, affordable, and diversified, it is even more important to reconnect people to the values of belonging to a place and supporting that place by shopping local. As someone who has done business development for The Weekly Juicery, I see a huge opportunity for the "Buy Local" movement in Lexington. People are currently very open to our message. w it is our job to engage them. Aside from the economic benefits of buying local, I am highly motivated by an ancillary benefit of buying local. It is my belief, whether we would admit it or not, that our values tend to follow our money more than our money follows our values. As such, choosing to repeatedly spend money at a local business brings people into a direct relationship with other members of our community, and generally fosters friendship and support. Feeling a sense of friendship about your community and it's businesses tends to contribute to a sense of feeling at home, and people tend to take better care of themselves and their communities if they feel like they belong to a place and it's people. Buying local is not the only factor that contributes to this sense of community, but in my experience it is certainly a part of what has turned Lexington into my home. Without both supporting local businesses and being supported by them, I would not feel as secure or as motivated to give back and serve. My only hope is that this "Buy Local" campaign can help facilitate that sense of community for others. Board Chair Statement Local First Lexington is ready to shift the culture and grow the economy of Central Kentucky. Join us in our quest to educate our community about the importance of making local purchasing decisions. Together we can sustain and expand our options for vibrant and original local experiences! Service Categories Primary Organization Category Public & Societal Benefit / Alliances & Advocacy Secondary Organization Category Mutual & Membership Benefit / Professional Societies & Associations Tertiary Organization Category Community Improvement, Capacity Building / Chambers of Commerce & Business Leagues Geographic Areas Served Areas Kentucky Kentucky Local First Lexington operates inside of Fayette County, but will allow businesses in neighboring counties to participate in activities if they desire to. 4
Impact Impact Goals Our goal is to generate wide spread interest in shopping at local independent businesses rather than national chains or online. By focussing our efforts on creating a membership base in the community, we are collecting participants who we can continue to educate and engage from year to year as the local economy grows and changes. If we our job, people will consider it a part of their identity to be someone who values shopping local. Hopefully that value will never go away. Strategies Our strategy for making this happen is to develop the "Localist" program as a means to activate community members to participate in the local economy. Capabilities We have all the resources necessary in order to meet these goals. We are completing a new membership management system that will allow individuals to register online, and are already capable of tabling at community engagement events. The only resource we still need to develop is a training program to help our volunteers and members to become more impactful. Indicators We will know if we are making progress in two ways: 1) If the number of "Localist" and member businesses are growing.2) If the "Localist" actually go out and participate in our "buy local" activities and campaigns. We want to have 1,000 Localist registered by the end of summer Progress So far we have established the platform through which to launch our Localist program. We have not begun selling these memberships yet, but are on track to be successful. Selling these memberships should generate the revenue needed to allow us to expand our programming and create more opportunities for community engagement. 5
Programs Programs Business Member Description Category Population Served Program Short Term Success Program Long term Success Business members must be locally owned businesses. In return for their membership and a small annual fee, they receive entry into our print directory, online directory, invitations to 4 member mixers a year, and invitations to monthly coffee meet-ups. They also have exclusive participation in our "buy local" challenges and activities. Community Development, General/Other Community Economic Development Adults, Adults, Adolescents Only (13-19 years) Short term success of this program can be measured in the number of new members we acquire. For example, if we acquire 15 new members that is approximately $1,500 that will go towards funding this program. Long-term success of this program is of utmost importance because it is where we receive most of our funding. Without this program, we would not exist. Localist Description The Localist program is an opportunity for individuals to support Local First Lexington while receiving information about how they can stay up-todate with exciting new events and activities hosted by independent businesses. Budget 3000 Category Population Served Community Development, General/Other Community Economic Development Adults, Adolescents Only (13-19 years), Aging, Elderly, Senior Citizens 6
