2 Letter to our readers Dear Residents, This is an extra-special newsletter celebrating the 125th anniversary of your library. I am very grateful to Information Services Manager, Ellen Drucker- Albert, and Cold Spring Harbor Library trustee & Town of Huntington Historian, Robert Hughes, for their research. A community-wide party is planned for Saturday, July 16 at 7:00 p.m. We hope you add this event to your calendar and join the celebration. Invitations were mailed in early June, but you may pick one up at the library, or visit and purchase tickets online. The librarians have planned an exciting 8-week program for all ages based on the internationally-themed statewide summer reading clubs. There will be art workshops, a concert, films, book discussions, even belly dancing and pretzel making. On Thursday, July 14, Juliet Eilperin will talk about her new book, Demon Fish (see page 5 for more details). On Saturday, July 16 at 1:00 p.m., the cast from Go, Dog. Go! will be here to entertain the children (see page 3 for more details). Also, this summer we are proud to show the work of a premier American Impressionist painter, Stokely Webster ( ). All of these programs clearly demonstrate our commitment to Expanding Your Horizons. Hope to see you soon, Helen M. Crosson You Are Cordially Invited to a Festive Evening in Olde Cold Spring Harbor Saturday, July 16, 2011 from 7:00 10:00 p.m. At the Library, 95 Harbor Road Menu of Traditional Summer Favorites & Cocktails Auction * Raffle Baskets * Musical Entertainment For more party information and ticket reservations, visit us at & click on the fireworks icon. The rent was donated by the owner, W.R.T. Jones, a direct descendant of Major Thomas Jones, of Jones Beach fame, and our first librarian was the miller s wife. By 1896, we had moved to the intersection of Main Street and Shore Road, into the small building that is now the barber shop. The acting librarian oversaw a collection of 949 volumes that were housed in a small rear room. In 1899, The Cold Spring Harbor Village Improvement Society was formed and initiated a building fund for a permanent home. Fundraising events included donations ranging from 10 to $1,000, including donations in 1912 by Louis Comfort Tiffany and Mr. & Mrs. Robert de Forest. Mr. de Forest was president of the Metropolitan Museum of Art from 1913 to 1931, and both he and his wife were instrumental in that institution s development. Mr. de Forest also served as a trustee of the Cold Spring Harbor Village Improvement Society, on the library s behalf, in 1913, 1919, and during the 1920s. Expanding Your Horizons Since 1886 In 1913, a new brick building, designed by Julian Peabody, the architect of Huntington s 1910 Town Hall, was erected on the corner of Main Street and Shore Road, for $7,000. By then, the library had a collection of 2,530 books, and it remained there for almost 75 years. From 1921 to 1925, the financier and philanthropist, Otto Hermann Kahn, who called Oheka Castle home, served as a trustee of the library. In 1986, having outgrown this space, the trustees sold the building to the Society for the Preservation of Long Island Antiquities, and moved to a space located in the old East Side School building at 75 Goose Hill Road in In 2000, the library trustees once again embarked on a building campaign. From 7,000 square feet, we expanded into a 26,700 square foot community centerpiece, opening in August 2006 with all the services and features expected in the 21st century - meeting rooms, computers, Wi-Fi, librarians, and, of course, books! Written by Ellen Drucker-Albert, Information Services Manager, with contributions from Robert C. Hughes, Cold Spring Harbor Library trustee & Town of Huntington Historian
