1 ALUMNI BOOK AWARDS It s time to sign up for our Alumni Book Award committee. We present high school juniors with Dartmouth themed books at their award ceremonies in the spring. We have a presence in Shaker Heights High School, Hudson High School, Western Reserve Academy, Aurora High School, St. Martin de Porras, and St. Edwards High School. Include your favorite high school on this list. For more information, Ted Olson 78 (tolson9166@aol.com). The Dartmouth Alumni Club Book Award Program has two goals: to recognize and reward high school students who have excelled both academically and in their extracurricular activities; and to encourage these talented students to consider Dartmouth. Book award recipients are well- rounded, high- caliber students - - in other words, potential candidates for the next Dartmouth class. Although the book award does not guarantee admission to the College, we encourage award winners to consider Dartmouth. All qualified high school juniors are eligible. A successful nominee must rank in the top 10 percent of their class, demonstrate strong character, have made a positive contribution to the school community, excel in at least one nonacademic area, and be a candidate for entrance to a competitive college or university. FUTURE EVENTS MONTHLY LUNCHES The next east side lunch is TUESDAY, February 11th, at PEARL OF THE ORIENT restaurant (20121 Van Aken Blvd. in Shaker Heights) starting at 11:45. 2 SATURDAY - FEBRUARY 22nd DARTMOUTH ON LOCATION (DOL) The Dartmouth on Location event is set. You should have received a postcard and/or from Hanover about the Dartmouth on Location (DOL) event on Saturday, February 22nd. Details and event registration are available at the link below. Professor Amy Lawrence, the Mary Brinsmead Wheelock Professor in the Humanities, will be our discussion leader. Program noon 1 pm: Registration and Lunch at the House of Blues 1 2 pm: Presentation by Professor Lawrence 2:30 5 pm: Visit the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Pricing Tickets: $45 Classes of : $35

3 SATURDAY MARCH 22 nd 6:00 p.m. - PONG TOURNAMENT Calling all classes. To: The Harbor Inn, on the west bank of the flats, 1219 Main Street, Cleveland. Join in starting at 6:00 p.m. You ll be serving a ping- pong ball, the Harbor in will be serving beer, and the DCNEO will be serving free pizza. THURSDAY APRIL 10 th ACCEPTED STUDENT RECEPTION Meet the accepted students for the class of 2018 at the Cleveland Racquet Club, Chagrin Blvd, Pepper Pike, Ohio from 6:00 7:30 p.m. Mark it on your calendar. We ll send additional details next month. DARTMOUTH COMES TO CLE FRIDAY FEBRUARY 28 th George T.M. Shackelford 77, Senior Deputy Director of the Kimbell Art Museum, Fort Worth, Texas will speak at the Cleveland Museum of Art on Van Gogh: The Face in the Mirror. Van Gogh: The Face in the Mirror - - Friday, February 28, 7:00 PM, Gartner Auditorium, Cleveland Museum of Art. George Shackelford, Dartmouth class of 1977 and Deputy Director of the Kimbell Art Museum, discusses Vincent van Gogh's remarkable self- portraits, relating the artist's paintings and drawings to the history of self- portraiture. Sponsored by the Painting and Drawing Society. Free, reservations recommended. Call the Ticket Center at (216) and please indicate Dartmouth group affiliation when reserving. The Museum is setting aside a block of tickets for the DCNEO. This lecture celebrates the exhibition Van Gogh Repetitions, an unprecedented exploration of pairs or groups of works in which the artist reworked a single theme multiple times. On view to the public Sunday, March 2, 2014 to Monday, May 26, Kelvin and Eleanor Smith Foundation Exhibition Gallery. WEDNESDAY, MARCH 5th Laurel J. Richie 81, President of the WNBA and Dartmouth Trustee will be the keynote speaker at the 2014 Cleveland Leadership Center Annual Meeting. We will pass along further information as it is obtained.

4 DARTMOUTH IN CHINA Many of you are aware that Dartmouth has more students participate in foreign studies programs than any school in the Ivy League. Here s a video of a 16 studying Mandarin in a Language Study Abroad Plus Program in Beijing. I will warn you that studying is not the operative word in the preceding sentence. DARTMOUTH IN SOCHI Dartmouth has 24 athletes participating in the Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia. Click on the link below to meet them and then follow their progress on NBC February 7 23, Dartmouth has participated in every Winter Olympic games dating back to 1924 in Chamonix, France. Dartmouth has sent more athletes to the games than any other Ivy.
