1 GARIBALDI MUSEUM MARITIME HISTORY Garibaldi Museum News WINTER 2013 INSIDE THIS ISSUE: What s New in the New Year The Garibaldi Museum is preparing for a great 2013 season beginning with a special early opening during the week of Spring Break (March & March 28-April 1). Join us Saturday, March 23rd and Saturday, March 30th for refreshments and special activities including a scavenger hunt with prizes. Come and see what s new at your only local maritime museum! Inside, volunteers have contributed many hours on building projects, painting, and helping redesign the gift shop. Thanks to local artist Dan Arnold, the outside mural is restored and more beautiful than ever (read more on page 5). In addition to physical updates to the museum, manager Anna Rzuczek is working hard to schedule a wide variety of fun, educational, and cultural events for the whole family. Look for more information in the following pages and remember - many events are provided FREE of charge as part of the museum s mission to serve the community. 2 P AGE 2 Scholarships Available The Garibaldi Museum Memorial Fund sponsors six scholarships; one to a Tillamook Bay Community College student and five to seniors in Tillamook County schools, public or private. The purpose of all scholarships is to raise interest in Captain Robert Gray and Pacific Northwest Trade in the late 18 th century. Tillamook Bay Community College Student $1,000 Scholarship Opportunity: Applications are available on line at scholarship.htm. Notice of award will be made in May to one Tillamook Bay Community College student for tuition, books or fees at the Tillamook Bay Community College, whose Power Point presentation illustrates the best telling of the story of Captain Robert Gray and the trade in the Pacific Northwest. Tillamook County High School Senior Scholarship Opportunities: The Memorial fund will award four $750 scholarships and one $1,000 scholarship. Application are available in the Tillamook County, Oregon high schools. Notice of awards are made mid May to five seniors, from Tillamook County high schools whose essays illustrate the best understanding of any number of issues about Caption Robert Gray and trade on the Pacific Rim. Essays should be a minimum of 500 words. Mark Your Calendar March 9th & 10th - Come to Garibaldi for the Crab Races and bring the kids to the Garibaldi Museum for a chance to win a special prize in our crab coloring contest. The contest is open to kids seven and under with paid admission. 23rd & 30th - Spring Break Scavenger Hunts! Both kids and adults can take the challenge. Complimentary refreshments will be available. April 6th - Artist presentation and wine tasting. Sample Oregon wines while enjoying the work of local artists Ty & Tamara Mautner of Stillwater Fish Prints. May 4th - United Paws will host a pet adoption event in the community room. Do you have room in your home and heart to adopt or foster a homeless pet? Tillamook Passage" is not only a book of nonstop adventure, it is a book with significant relevance to anyone who is interested in Northwest history and coastal Indian culture. - Daily Astorian Coast Weekend 30th - Reception for 2013 Garibaldi Museum Memorial Scholarship winners. Since 1999, the museum s Captain Gray Memorial Fund has given thousands in scholarships to local high school graduates who are pursuing higher education. 3 P AGE 3 Quilt Raffle to Raise Funds for Museum Watch for your chance to win a beautifully crafted quilt in a raffle to raise funds for the museum. If you d like to sponsor the quilt for just $25, contact the museum at All sponsors will be publicly recognized. Tickets will go on sale soon! Thank You for Joining Us Visitors had a hauntingly good time at the Garibaldi Museum Halloween Celebration on Sunday, October 28th. The museum s own Anna Rzuczek appeared out of the past in authentic 18th century garb and welcomed visitors with a variety of activities and treats. The Museum then hosted an Open House on Friday, November 23rd & Saturday, November 24th. The annual event was well attended. Visitors enjoyed refreshments, a gift raffle, and special discounts in the gift shop. Not only was it a great opportunity to pick up special gifts for the holidays, but it was a chance for visitors to share with those in need by donating non-perishable food. All food donations went to the Garibaldi Food Pantry. Thank you to everyone who participated in these events that wrapped up the 2012 season. We look forward to providing many fun and engaging events in Volunteers Wanted Trivia: Your talents are needed at the Garibaldi Museum. Even if you re not sure how you might participate, come in and we can find a good fit for your talents and interests. Whether you want to be a regular or occasional volunteer; or you want to commit many hours or just a few doesn t matter. We value whatever time you are able to give. There are many options for volunteering including, but not limited to covering the front desk, grounds maintenance, cleaning, research, clerical, public relations, and presentations. We hope to see you soon! Meeting Room Available The meeting room, with kitchen and restrooms, is available to the public for a fee of $100 per day. Local non-profit organizations may rent the room for $50 per day. Museum Assessment Program is Sailing Forward The Garibaldi Museum, has been officially accepted into the American Association of Museums Museum Assessment Program (MAP) and has begun the selfstudy phase of the program. During this phase, we will be reviewing our mission, planning, educational activities, facilities and collections management, and administration and governance with a focus on professional standards and best practices. Watch for more updates as we proceed with this important work. The Garibaldi Museum has partnered with the school as a project site. On April 19th, students will travel to the museum to help with projects both inside and out. Students will work alongside staff and volunteers to better their community, make positive connections, and reap the rewards of helping others. 5 G ARIBALDI MUSEUM NEWS P AGE 5 Local Artist Completes Mural Restoration Coastal weather has taken its toll on the mural gracing the front of the museum. Local artist, Dan Arnold worked many hours to bring life back to the mural. He then added a layer of sealant to help protect the artwork and building against the elements. Tillamook County has a wonderful maritime museum, rich in the history of Captain Robert Gray, 18 th century sailing, the story of Garibaldi, Oregon, and much more. Enhance the maritime heritage of the Pacific Northwest by focusing on Captain Robert Gray and the historic vessels, the Lady Washington and Columbia Rediviva; Encourage studies in the construction, sailing, navigation, and other related maritime and oceanic activities; Recognize the literature, art, music, and dance related to the age of sailing; Provide services to communities throughout the Pacific Northwest geographical region through community educational programs for all ages, in order to develop knowledge and understanding of the cultural and historical aspects of shipbuilding, sailing, navigation and other related activities.
