1 JEKYLL ISLAND ARTS ASSOCIATION Goodyear Cottage, Historic District Jekyll Island, Georgia May 2018 Newsletter MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Bonnie Householder Even before we relocated full time to Jekyll Island, May has always been one of my favorite months here the weather is generally great not too hot, buggy, muggy or crowded on the beaches, the turtles are nesting, and hurricane season has not yet started. That s the upside the downside is, by now, most of our winter guests have already left Jekyll for their homes in the northern climes. Jekyll Island Arts Association misses each of you, and we look forward to your return in the fall or winter we ll be waiting and watching for you you add greatly to our organization and many others on Jekyll, and it s not the same without you. So far in 2018, we had a successful Arts Festival, three evening programs, (with another on the way in May), classes have started and finished, and your board is breathing a sigh of relief that there is nothing big planned (other than exhibits, of course) in the next few months. There are some housekeeping things to do at Goodyear and we ll work on them through the summer. The story on the front page of the latest Golden Islander reports FOHJI is having one last show of the Fiore sculpture and painting exhibit on the second floor of Mistletoe, where it has been for years. As JIAA representative on this team of people deciding what to do with the items, it has been my pleasure to work with and learn from this great group of folks. I ve only been a part of the group for two years, but it needs to be relocated so renovations can be done at Mistletoe, and this team has considered a myriad of options. There will hopefully be a few pieces which will be meaningful to Jekyll Island and will be used on a rotating basis. Stay tuned. The Board does not meet during the summer months, but we will remain busy. Elsewhere in the newsletter, you will find help wanted ads to help our over-stretched board members. Read through the open positions and see if there is one that piques your interest. Signing up to help is a wonderful way to dip your toes in the water to see how the JIAA operates. Have a glorious summer, and we ll see you in the Fall. 2 Page 2 JIAA Newsletter FACILITIES REPORT Craig Patterson As many of you know, after a review and discussion of the loan offered to us by the Small Business Administration, the JIAA Board voted to decline the offer of the loan. The main concern was that, by accepting the loan the board was taking on a 30-year obligation. At that meeting the Pottery Guild provided information regarding the current state of the equipment in the pot shop. As of that report, all the equipment was working but not working up to the full capabilities that the equipment had prior to hurricanes Matthew and Irma. The feeling expressed by the guild was that they could work with the equipment in its current state but that failures were anticipated, but hopefully repairable in the short term. In the long term new equipment will be needed as the cost of repairs start to out weigh the cost of replacing the units. It was expressed that sometime after the upcoming hurricane season that at least two new kilns should be purchased to replace the two oldest units. Since this meeting was held, the prediction of failures has been born out, repairs have had to be made, to a couple of the kilns, to keep them operational. Tom Muse has been taking care of the repairs and we owe him our thanks. Two projects have been initiated relating to past flooding in the pot shop, one is for a backup generator for the sump pump and the other is an emergency plan for the pot shop that would be used in the event of another threat of a hurricane. A generator is on order with installation to hopefully take place in June. The emergency plan is currently being developed by the pottery guild. The plan calls for members to be called, in the event of a pending storm, to disassemble equipment and move as much as possible to high ground. Also, members have been asked to take care of their cubbies, especially if the members are not here during the summer/ hurricane season. The paving project should be either done or in process by the time you read this , but then again, I find myself making more and more false predictions. The floors in Goodyear will be refinished in August, this will necessitate Goodyear being closed to visitors from August 10 th through to August 31 st. NEWS FROM THE GOODYEAR SHOP Deb Patterson Management days at the Goodyear Shop are Monday and Thursday. On those days tags are run and filed in folders, artwork is placed, shelves are dusted and sales are recorded. Any questions regarding shop procedures can be directed to my dljpatterson2000@yahoo.com. If you have questions regarding payment, the gallery, gallery shows or sales please them to: jekyllartists@gmail.com, and they will be forwarded to the appropriate individual. Thanks to all.
