MASS February 7, 2016 Superbowl Sunday Path of Life O God of reconciliation, you are rich in kindness and slow to anger. In your mercy, you sent your Son, Jesus, to show us the path of life. As we begin our Lenten journey, give us the courage to walk with Christ. May our fasting, prayer, and almsgiving create a deep hunger for you, O Lord, and perfect the love we have for you and our neighbors. In this acceptable time, grant us clean hearts and fill us with the love of your Holy Spirit so that we may show mercy to all those we meet. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. 2 February 6 7, 2016 Dear friends, Our Challenge On this last Sunday of Ordinary Time until the coming summer, the prophet Isaiah suggests in our first reading that no one confronted with the majesty of God can feel worthy to be God s servant. We have seen and spoken too much evil to bear God s holy word. But God has no one else on whom to depend other than ordinary people such as ourselves. And in our second reading, St. Paul suggests to the early Church in Corinth, Greece, that the power of the gospel enables individuals to make a fresh start in life. They had to look no further than the person of Paul himself to see that truth. Similarly, our gospel lesson reminds us that of all the people Jesus might have chosen for his disciples, he called ordinary workers with ordinary abilities to be his friends. When it comes to being a follower of Christ, a trusting heart is more important than a brilliant mind or an impressive bank balance. In a world of empires and nations, political parties and educational institutions, the greatest achievements in human history are all the work of individuals. No group of human beings could have written the Golden Rule, discovered electricity, or produced the theory of relativity. The mysteries of heaven and earth are unlocked by individuals. In a world where individual names and faces are lost in a blur, we forget that the human family was built up one person at a time and belongs to each person equally. God created the human race as a family of individuals living together in mutual justice and love. Happy Mardi Gras! Have a great week and a great Lenten season ahead! Love and prayers, Father Randy Stewardship of Offering Commitment Cards Please turn in your Commitment Cards in the offertory baskets during Mass or to the Parish Office. 3 February 13-14, 2016 Dear friends, Our Challenge Moses was the great law-giver of Old Testament history. He was responsible for codifying the laws of God for the ancient Israelites. These laws were given as guides for the conscience. They laid down general principles or right and wrong, but the choice remained with the individual believer. In our second reading this weekend from St. Paul s letter to the earliest Church in Rome, he assures us that we are not left alone in our struggle to choose between right and wrong. The word of God is on our lips and in our hearts to help us discern the way that we should go. We have the wisdom of the ages to help us make wise choices here and now. The story of the temptations of Jesus provides us a paradigm for resisting temptation in our own lives. Jesus meets each one of the temptations with words from Scripture. He did not rely on his own moral discernment or strength of will. He drew on the word of God and the strength of his tradition in his battle against evil. For two thousand years theologians have argued about human freedom and the will. Some have said we are more inclined to do wrong than to do right. Others have argued that there is a perfect balance between the inclination to do right and to do wrong. But all theologians have agreed that we feel an urge to do right and are free to either act on it or reject it. We marvel at people who risk their own lives without a moment s hesitation to save someone in peril. Such heroics are only the most dramatic examples of the urge to do right that is in all of us. Cardinal John Henry Newman had this to say about conscience: Conscience is the true vicar of Christ in the soul; a prophet in its information, a monarch in its pre-emptoriness; a priest in its blessings and anathemas, according as we obey or disobey it. Christ bids us listen to the prophet, the monarch, the priest in our soul. Have a great week! Love and prayers, Father Randy THE SACRAMENTS RECONCILIATION Reconciliation is in the Church at 3:30 p.m. on Saturdays, from 7:30-8:00 a.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and on request immediately after the 6:00 a.m. Masses on Monday and Wednesday, or anytime by appointment with either priest.
