2 February 26, 2017 Our Challenge Dear friends, There are times when we feel forsaken and forgotten by God. But a loving mother would sooner abandon her newborn child than God could forsake or forget us. He always cares for his own beloved sons and daughters. The world sees only natural law and human agency behind the overall scheme of things. But God is at work in the depth of things, bringing about his eternal purposes. We Christians have the joyous task of sharing in God s hidden care for the whole creation. We would all live with a lot less fear and a lot more joy if we took these words of Jesus to heart. We are not left to struggle alone against an uncaring world and indifferent society. God is at work in the shadows keeping watch over his own. The Church tells us that there are two ways that God provides for His children. An abundance of grace happens in those very rare occasions when God enters our lives in a miraculous way. Natural or daily grace shows how God blesses us day in and day out, through the laws of nature and with the help from others. The levels of fear and anxiety seem to be rising all about us and throughout the world. Threats of every kind proliferate..economic, environmental, political, international, and interpersonal. Safe places seem few and far between. Among us, the unemployed fear being evicted from their homes. Among us are employers being forced to decide which workers will be laid off. Among us are cancer patients whose families can t afford further treatment. Among us are those who live in neighborhoods where violence is a daily occurrence. Among us are those anxious about the welfare of the military family member deployed in a foreign combat zone. Among us are children who are worried about where their parents are. Our self-concern can blind us to God s boundless goodness and His call to open our minds to new possibilities of sharing our blessings in service and love with others who are anxious about their lives. Polar opposites characteristically resist each other, whether they are personalities, points of view, or power struggles. We see examples of this internationally, locally, and within ourselves. Often, however, it need not be a matter of either or. Sometimes opposites need to find an appropriate balance, so that the value of each is kept. For example, the life of faith involves both trusting and acting. Have a good week! Love and prayers, Father Randy Baby Bottle Campaign a Big Success A big thank you goes out to all of you who participated in the Baby Bottle Campaign this year. It was a huge success. We collected over $7700 to date (still a few bottles left out there to be returned). This money will help the Pregnancy Problem Center in their life saving mission. A special thanks goes out to the Knights of Columbus and the Dignity of Life Committee members of St. Aloysius for handing out and collecting the bottles. But most of all we want to thank the parishioners of St. Aloysius for their generosity. PARISH STAFF Parish Office: Fr. Randy M. Cuevas ext 3023 Pastor rcuevas@staloysiusparish.com Fr. 3 March 5, 2017 Our Challenge Dear friends, Out of God s new creation humankind was given the breath of life and a garden in Eden. There was a tree of the knowledge of good and evil. There was a serpent to entice the first pair, but their eyes were opened and they began to see God s will. Sin came into the world through one man and death through sin. But those who received the abundance of grace in Christ found new life. One man s disobedience caused many sins, but one man s obedience made things right. Jesus fasted forty days and nights and was tempted by the devil. Three times he appealed to Jesus to use his powers in dramatic ways to increase his fame. But Jesus resisted these attractive temptations on the basis of Scripture and eventually the devil left him, and angels came and ministered to him. The uniqueness of Jesus in world history is beyond question. Two thousand years after his earthly presence he remains an unparalleled figure, and not just in the minds of the multitudes of his faithful followers. Even those who deny the reality of God will often acknowledge the historical contributions of Jesus. By almost any standards, he was one of the most inspired and praiseworthy figures in human history. All temptations are not the same. All temptations do not come to us in the same way. But temptation comes to us all. To be tempted is natural and is not a sin. Jesus himself was tempted. Mark Twain said: There are several good protections against temptations, but the surest is cowardice. George Bernard Shaw wrote: I never resist temptation because I have found that things that are bad for me do not tempt me. The conquest of temptation builds character and strength. In Jesus Christ we serve a Lord who has conquered the world. The concerns of our day to day activities keep us preoccupied through most of our lives. But our Lord calls us not just to come to him, but to go to the broken and needy for whom he died. May the Lord call us away from our repetitive activities and help us to see those who live in darkness and are waiting for the light. Have a good week! Love and prayers, Father Randy Prayer: Our Deepest Longing HEALING HEARTS & HOMES: The Diocese of Baton Rouge is participating in the One Book One Church series again this Lent. 6 The Thomas Family Harrison, Jackson, AJ, Terrel & Jay We decided to make the Hand in Hand Campaign, an additional obligation to our monthly tithing because we don't want to deny our experience to anyone. We are Jay and Terrel Thomas and we came to St. Aloysius through what some might consider to be "by chance". We were members living out of parish because Terrel had attended St. Aloysius while at LSU and liked the family focused atmosphere. We were living in a partially renovated barn on Jay's dad's property at the edge of town, Terrel had just passed the bar exam while 8 months pregnant, and Jay had been practicing law on his own for all of about a year. Like many young couples, we struggled financially, so when Terrel got an offer to practice law at LWCC, we jumped on it, but didn't have any daycare lined up. We nervously called St. Aloysius Daycare, since we were members, but didn't expect to get in because the only tithing we had ever done was tossing a few bucks into the offering plate on Sundays. To our surprise they took us, no questions asked. Ms. Bonnie couldn't wait to meet us. It was at that time that we decided to make tithing a regular part of our budget. Soon we were able into the parish and began to experience the closeness, strength, and stability that St. Aloysius's church community offers. Our closest friends and neighbors are the folks we got to know through fellowship at St. Aloysius Church and School. This community is a family to us and has helped us through many struggles, including completely losing our home in Hurricane Gustav, the sudden loss of Jay's mother at the same time, and the help and guidance we've received from our church family in raising our three sons. We have contributed to the SAS Building Fund for over ten years. Father Gerald Burns said something that really stuck in our hearts. He said that when he became pastor of St. Aloysius, it was an aging parish, but he had hoped and prayed that a new wave would take over the parish; one where children were publically embraced and welcomed, instead of just tolerated. It was with these words that we remembered the day we called the daycare center, only it was us that were embraced and welcomed. After prayer and reflection, we realized that it wasn't chance that brought us here...it was our Lord and the vision that He gave to the members of St. Aloysius who came before us. So, we decided to make the the Hand in Hand Campaign, an additional obligation to our monthly tithing because we don't want to deny our experience to anyone. We want to embrace and welcome even those who think they may have gotten here...by chance. February 26 and March 5, th Sunday in Ordinary Time and 1st Sunday of Lent
