1 October 29, 2017 Parish Bulletin Issue 36 Volume XLIX 2025 Stuart Avenue Baton Rouge, Louisiana (225) Fax (225) Website: Sunday, October 29, 2017, 30th Sunday in Ordinary Time When the Pharisees heard that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together, and one of them, a scholar of the law tested him by asking, "Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest?" He said to him, "You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment. The second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. The whole law and the prophets depend on these two commandments." MT 22:34-40 All Saints Day - Wednesday, November 1st Holy Day of Obligation St. Aloysius Masses 6:00 a.m., 8:00 a.m., 12:00 noon and 6:00 p.m. October 29, th Sunday of Ordinary Time

2 October 29, 2017 Our Challenge Dear friends, Moses wants God to be his guide through the wilderness and to give him exact orders. Moses received no such orders. God promises only God s presence. Even in this Sunday s story from the Book of Exodus where God is palpably present, God is hidden. This story speaks a truth that God is merciful and gracious, but God is not knowable. Our New Testament passage reflects that the earliest Christians in Thessalonika, Greece, experienced joy despite their troubles. It was appropriate for these Christians to look forward to Christ s Second Coming because Paul had assured them that Christ would deliver them from the wrath to come. They would not suffer the judgment that the wicked would experience at the end of time. In our passage from Matthew s gospel, Jesus is speaking of a self-sacrificing love. Jesus is asking us to turn to others in their need and to give away something of ourselves without thinking of what we will receive in return. Jesus does not separate the love of God from the love of our neighbor. When we see the word love used by Jesus, he is speaking of a love that transcends emotion. He is speaking of commitment. Our feelings are nebulous. They go up and down like a roller coaster. If we base our love on feelings, we are doomed. However, if we are able to make a commitment to love beyond any feelings we might have, this is the love Jesus is describing. In order to love our neighbor as ourselves we first have to love God. In expressing the two commandments of the Law, Jesus knew that it would be impossible to love others if we first did not love God, because one flows from the other. The type of love Jesus talks about does not come naturally. It is the kind of love that comes from God and then is put into action. It takes practice and commitment. It is a deliberate act of the will and has nothing to do with emotion or how we might feel toward another. It is an expression of the love that we have for God which we show in a self-sacrificing manner by helping others in need. Have a good week! ST. ALOYSIUS CHURCH BEREAVEMENT MASS AND LUNCHEON All who have a deceased family member or loved one who was buried from St. Aloysius Parish since last All Saints Day are invited to Mass and Luncheon. 4 Good News! Thanks to your generosity and the Parish s vision our Parish Pastoral Services Center will soon be up and running and at your service! As the building is nearing completion, the T-Modular buildings across from the Parish Administration will be removed from the property, and our computer and telephone systems are transitioned, some interruption of indeterminate length in our internet, , and phone communications can be expected for the remainder of October. As our clergy, religious, pastoral staff, and administrative personnel are in the process of moving offices, it may be difficult to find them between the multiple buildings on the campus in which they are currently located and the new Pastoral Services Center in which they will soon all be located. Thank you in advance for your patience and perseverance during our transition and in seeking timely replies to s and voice mail messages. For sacramental emergencies, voice mail messages left on our emergency phone are being monitored closely: Your Support of the BAA Meets Needs Throughout the Diocese A picture of your commitment to the Lord Jesus Christ and your regard for others, parishioners from St. Aloysius Parish have prayerfully made the Bishop s Annual Appeal a priority, and that support is a great encouragement to your fellow parishioners, neighbors and friends. Our ability to address formidable challenges is possible because we serve as part of the great kingdom of God. I say to you, if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, Move from here to there, and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you (Mt 17:20b). Moved by Faith, please pray about your participation in the BAA this year. Last week, Bishop Muench mailed a packet that includes helpful information concerning this year s campaign. In it, we celebrate your generosity during a challenging year for the diocese, and ask how God might bless our Catholic community going forward. Please be a part of that effort by choosing to contribute to the Bishop s Annual Appeal today. If you didn t receive a packet, please contact the Office of Stewardship at (225) , or stewardship@diobr.org. Online donations may be made at Wholly Fit VOCATIONS Come join Wholly Fit on Monday, Wednesday, and Fridays at 8:30 a.m. in the Parish Hall. Twenty-five minutes of cardio are followed by twenty minutes of toning with hand weights and maintenance moves that promote muscle strength. Pay by the month cost is $25 and for those who cannot commit to three days per week, the cost is $2 per session. Please contact Donna Gerstner at or gerstner3691@gmail.com if interested. St. Martin de Porres Feast Day November 3 St. Martin de Porres was born in Lima, Peru on December 9, Martin was the illegitimate son to a Spanish gentlemen and a freed slave from Panama, of African or possibly Native American descent. At a young age, Martin's father abandoned him, his mother and his younger sister, leaving Martin to grow up in deep poverty. After spending just two years in primary school, Martin was placed with a barber/surgeon where he would learn to cut hair and the medical arts. As Martin grew older, he experienced a great deal of ridicule for being of mixed-race. In Peru, by law, all descendants of African or Indians were not allowed to become full members of religious orders. Martin, who spent long hours in prayer, found his only way into the community he longed for was to ask the Dominicans of Holy Rosary Priory in Lima to accept him as a volunteer who performed the most menial tasks in the monastery. In return, he would be allowed to wear the habit and live within the religious community. When Martin was 15, he asked for admission into the Dominican Convent of the Rosary in Lima and was received as a servant boy and eventually was moved up to the church officer in charge of distributing money to deserving poor. During his time in the Convent, Martin took on his old trades of barbering and healing. He also worked in the kitchen, did laundry and cleaned. After eight more years with the Holy Rosary, Martin was granted the privilege to take his vows as a member of the Third Order of Saint Dominic by the prior Juan de Lorenzana who decided to disregard the law restricting Martin based on race. Martin was assigned to the infirmary where he would remain in charge until his death. Martin was praised for his unconditional care of all people, regardless of race or wealth. He took care of everyone from the Spanish nobles to the African slaves. Martin didn't care if the person was diseased or dirty, he would welcome them into his own home. In January of 1639, when Martin was 60-years-old, he became very ill with chills, fevers and tremors causing him agonizing pain. He would experience almost a year full of illness until he passed away on November 3, October 29, th Sunday of Ordinary Time
