2 ETCETERA... Dear Sisters and Brothers, I was glad to be at the auction on Friday night and saw for myself what a spectacular gathering it was. A parishioner visited with me at the auction and commented, Forget about how much money we make tonight, the opportunity to be with other parishioners, to visit, and to catch up is in and of itself so heart-warming. I couldn t agree with him more, for, if you know me, you know I firmly believe in the importance of gathering to celebrate our life together. Events like Coffee and Donuts, St. Aloysius Day, the Mardi Gras Viewing Party, Holy Smoke, Stewardship of Ministry Appreciation Dinner, etc. are quite important to the life of the parish. And while the auction and the fair are the main fundraising events for the parish, their social aspect is equally the underlying raison d etre. I want to express our appreciation to Becky and Steve Maher for organizing Holy Smoke, and to Jaci and Ryan Juneau for coordinating the auction. We re blessed to have such dedicated and gifted parishioners! Don t forget the Parish Fair Fiesta coming up soon, on November. We staff also had our annual social gathering last Sunday at the rectory. The gathering was an opportunity for the staff to meet one another s spouse and to spend time together outside of work. Fr. Ron Rolheiser, a columnist in The Catholic Commentator, wrote, The Eucharist is the body of Christ, a continuation of the Incarnation, and, like Jesus birth, is meant to bring the divine into concrete, everyday life Everything is meant to be in relationship. The Eucharist honors that The Eucharist invites us to gather as family. For a variety of reasons, we have been slow to take this aspect of the Eucharist seriously Our reluctance to accept this is evident in the simple criticism that is made of people who go to church principally because of its social aspect [but while] one of the reasons we go to church is pray, we go there too for the same reason we go to the family table every evening, just to be there with each other. Church documents refer to the Eucharist both as a sacrifice and a meal. Overemphasizing one over the other, we risk missing the richness of the Eucharist. We must be careful to hold the balance so that we can walk in the way of holiness with both legs, instead of limping around with only one! Someone came up this week and asked if I was sick a couple of weeks ago, because a priest from another parish was celebrating Mass. The reason was simply that Fr. Sanjay was out of town! Don t be alarmed this weekend when you don t see me celebrate Mass! I am just in Natchitoches to officiate a wedding! I was at Manresa last week with a number of priests for our annual retreat. The retreat director was Father Philip Chircop, a popular Jesuit who has preached at some parishes in the diocese. He was insightful and wellread, offering some interesting sayings. I found his definition of prayer, for example, interesting: Prayer is to relax in the reality of being loved. How simple and beautiful! Cont d on Page 3 PARISH STAFF Parish Office: Fr. Than N. 3 In the preliminary document issued this week, the synod in Rome wrote: Realizing the need, therefore, for spiritual discernment with regard to cohabitation, civil marriages and divorced and remarried persons, it is the task of the Church to recognize those seeds of the Word that have spread beyond its visible and sacramental boundaries. Following the expansive gaze of Christ, whose light illuminates every man (cf. Jn 1,9; cf. Gaudium et Spes, 22), the Church turns respectfully to those who participate in her life in an incomplete and imperfect way, appreciating the positive values they contain rather than their limitations and shortcomings. This simple paragraph offers a lot to reflect on. PRAYING FOR VOCATIONS THE 31 CLUB Are you concerned about the shortage of priests and religious in the Catholic Church? Do you pray regularly and with your family for an increase in vocations to the priesthood and religious life? The St. Aloysius Parish Vocations Committee is renewing the 31 Club to promote more prayers for vocations. The 31 Club consists of a group of 31 people and families who commit to pray for vocations one day a month. You pick or are assigned one day of the month and on that day each month you pray for vocations. You may, for example, attend mass and offer it and your Holy Communion for vocations or you may pray the rosary, or you may pray for vocations in front of the Blessed Sacrament. To sign-up for the 31 Club contact Nanette Gremillion at or nangrem@cox.net. If you are already a member of the club that was formed several years ago, call Nanette to renew your commitment. When we have more than 31 members we will start a second club and those who have picked the same day of the month will be introduced to each other so they can get to know one another and hopefully become prayer partners. 7 BEREAVEMENT MINISTRY Needs Food Team Co-Chairs The Bereavement Food Team is in need of two new food team co-chairs. The ministry provides food to the family of the deceased following a funeral at St. Aloysius. The food team co-chairs will contact the volunteers on their food team and coordinate the delivery of the food. Each co-chair may be called on to coordinate food following a funeral once every couple of months. If you have any questions or are interested in volunteering as a food team co-chair, contact Nancy Keaton at keatonnancy@gmail.com or BISHOP S ANNUAL APPEAL Centered on the Concerns of Others Through the BAA, You Honor Christ and Meet Others Needs On behalf of the essential ministries your gifts support, and the many thousands whose needs they help to meet, please accept the sincere gratitude of our spiritual shepherd Bishop Robert W. Muench for your generous contributions to the Bishop s Annual Appeal. Your contributions model the love of Christ and offer hope to those most in need. Participation in the ministry of the BAA is a message of shared concern and a commitment to address the needs of others. Bear one another s burdens, and so you will fulfill the law of Christ. (Galatians 6:2) Your personal gift is helping to lift burdens individuals and families have been carrying. Thank you for choosing to help bear that load. And, if you are among those who have planned to give, but haven t done so already, please join your fellow parishioners and support the Bishop s Annual Appeal. Consider the concerns of others, for God knows our needs. By now, parishioners should have received a mailed invitation from Bishop Muench inviting them to participate in the Bishop s Annual Appeal. Our parish has a long history of generously supporting the BAA, and we invite you to consider a personal commitment again this year. If you did not receive a copy of this year s appeal by mail, please contact the Office of Stewardship at or stewardship@diobr.org. For an in depth look at the ministries or programs supported through the BAA, visit baabr.org.
