Our Challenge Dear friends: Acts makes Saul to have been the instigator of the persecution of the Church. With Saul s conversion the persecution of the church did not stop.

The First Letter of John, from which our second reading comes, is really a sermon written for a community that defined itself over and against the world around it.

2 Our Challenge Dear friends: Acts makes Saul to have been the instigator of the persecution of the Church. With Saul s conversion the persecution of the church did not stop. It was only with the exit of Saul from the Holy Land, back to his native land of Tarsus, that peace once again returned. The First Letter of John, from which our second reading comes, is really a sermon written for a community that defined itself over and against the world around it. The community to whom John addressed his gospel were children of light and those outside were children of darkness. In John, our sole responsibility to the rest of the branches is love. And, it is worth remembering that branches do not live off their own fruit. The fruit is for someone else, those who need our outpouring of love. The overwhelming thrust of these verses has to do with fruitfulness. The words bear fruit appear six times in these eight verses. Fruit-bearing is not something that the branches do by force of will. The fruit happens organically because the vine is true and the gardener good. Our true values are revealed in the way we set our priorities. Our prayer life gets swallowed up with everyday concerns. We are also tempted by loyalties. But our first loyalty is to live as Christ would want us to. We bear fruit not by squeezing it out of ourselves, but because we are extensions of the vine, pruned by the gardener God, who wants us to be fruitful and to be drawn into the unity of the Father and Son. Those baptized in another Christian tradition are also received by a Profession of Faith and Confirmation at Easter, as well as other points throughout the year. On Sunday April 15, St.

3 The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is a year-round program at St. Aloysius that welcomes people to begin Inquiry at any time. The highlight of the year is the Easter Vigil, when adult Catechumens are baptized after a year of preparation and formation. Those baptized in another Christian tradition are also received by a Profession of Faith and Confirmation at Easter, as well as other points throughout the year. On Sunday April 15, St. Aloysius celebrated the threshold Rites of Acceptance and Welcome for one Catechumen and two Candidates who have been meeting in our Wednesday evening Inquiry Sessions. Each was welcomed by name and received our promise of prayers and support. They are being joined by three more candidates in the coming weeks. Please continue to pray for our catechumen, Andrew Kolb, and our Candidates, Bailey Abendroth, Ethan Harp, David Post, Mackenzie Schild, and Gary Thornhill. And, because the RCIA program continues to grow, we need new Sponsors. Church of Second Chances introduces the Catholic principle of restorative justice by sharing the stories of incarcerated people through interviews, documentaries, presentations by experts, dialogue, and reflection. The module addresses the following themes: Exploring common misconceptions about people in prison and how such misunderstandings have shaped our sense of responsibility Considering the Church s teaching on rehabilitation and restoration Reshaping our lives, communities, and systems to offer us a second chance to embody God s vision of mercy, both for inmates as well as those of on the other side of the prison bars The module consists of eight 2 ½-hour sessions and, depending upon the consensus of those parishioners interested, will be scheduled during May, June, and/ or July. Leslie Chauvin and Diane O Connor have completed fifty hours of training and are prepared to join our current Stephen Ministers Lynn Carville, Laura Lee Owen, Helen Bullock, V.J. Dauterive, Jane Roussel, Jason Summers, Bob Schoen, and Kathy Nikolaus in providing confidential Christian care for people in our parish who are grieving or going through other challenges in their lives. The commitment to care is provided as long as needed. The project began Saturday, April 21 and continues until Saturday, June 2. Workdays are Wednesday and Saturday during this time. You are welcome to work any of the workdays of the project. The scheduled St. Aloysius work dates and anticipated tasks are detailed below. Please consider working one of these scheduled St. Aloysius workdays.
