2 October 31-November 1, 2015 Dear friends, Our Challenge In our first reading this weekend John is given a vision of what will happen in the world s last terrible days. He sees that a great tribulation will come. It will be a final assault by the evil and demonic powers, as well as a final destruction of the earth. There will also be a great triumph of the faithful, those who have washed their robes and made them white through the blood of the Lamb. We are told in our second reading from John s first letter that human troubles can lead to despair, and people often turn to some form of escapism. The people of Jesus Christ need not resort to such options. In Christ we have the assurance of God s everlasting love. Hardships and persecutions have always come to God s faithful. But in the Christian community we have unique resources of hope and promise. The Beatitudes of Jesus are much-beloved and well-known. They point to the true source of happiness. Still, many people who have treasured them through the ages may never have realized how radically counter-cultural they are. Happiness in the kingdom of God is found in places and in ways quite different from the world s assumptions and values. Jesus coming into the world caused a profound transvaluation of things. He turned the world of values upside-down. He challenged the traditional measures of success. He said that those who suffer violence are actually the winners over those who inflict violence. Those who show mercy are greater than those who seek revenge. Those who serve are greater than those who rule. We hear a lot of talk about traditional values. But much of what passes for traditional values is actually a reflection of worldly values, such as success, pleasure, wealth, and pride. Christ calls his followers to a different way, the way of self-giving love and service to the world. The pull of the world is strong, and the temptation to have it all is ever with us. We are bombarded on every hand by images of the successful person. The successful person is well-educated and well-heeled. The successful person is well-known and wellrespected. There is nothing wrong with these marks of worldly success, but do they really define the successful human being? A successful human being is a person whose life is centered in love for God and for all people - - saints and sinners. Have a great week! Love and prayers, Father Randy PARISH STAFF Parish Office: Fr. Randy M. Cuevas ext 3023 Pastor rcuevas@staloysiusparish.com Fr. 5 BISHOP S ANNUAL APPEAL Through the BAA, You Glorify God and Serve Others Thirty years ago, Bishop Stanley Ott established the Bishop s Annual Appeal with a far-reaching vision to expand ministry and increase Catholic influence in the greater capital area. Today, we honor a commitment shared by thousands of generous parishioners whose gifts allow us to celebrate thirty years of support for essential programs and projects throughout the Diocese of Baton Rouge. To all those who have made that vision a reality, thank you. It is a privilege to advance that legacy of faithfulness and, if you ve already taken advantage of the opportunity to make your valued contribution this year, please know we re very grateful for your gift. If you ve not yet made your commitment, you ll be invited to do so at St Aloysius Parish. Along with your fellow Catholic worshipers, you can take part in a Commitment Weekend celebration to be held every Mass the weekend of November 7 and 8. Offertory envelopes will be available for your convenience. To honor the call of Jesus Christ and to commemorate three decades of significant ministry support, we Glorify God and Serve Others, as we Celebrate and Continue Thirty Years of Vital Ministry in the Diocese of Baton Rouge. We think of the Bishop Tracy Center, Catholic Life TV, the Sanctuary for Life, and so many other ministry efforts, and rejoice in God s blessing and your generosity. For additional information concerning the impact of your gracious gifts, please visit baabr.org and read about the great work you make possible through the BAA.
