4 ST. JOHN S UNDERGRADUATE SCHOLARSHIPS Catholic Student Scholarship Tying faith and education together is important at St. John s, and we strive to enrich the experiences of those who seek both. As one of three Vincentian universities in the country, we re committed to preparing our Roman Catholic students for ethical leadership so that they bring our heritage of service to the public sphere. This scholarship offers a limited number of awards to first-time college-bound Catholics to assist them in achieving their next level of success. So take a look at yourself. JOHN S UNDERGRADUATE SCHOLARSHIPS Ozanam Scholars Program This bold program provides a select group of scholars with an innovative learning experience that focuses on academic scholarship and research, Vincentian service, and global citizenship. Working closely with dedicated faculty, Ozanam Scholars investigate and solve real-world problems, inspiring change throughout their college careers. These motivated students study abroad their sophomore year; complete an independent study junior year and a capstone project senior year; fulfill service and program requirements all four years; and earn a social justice minor. This program is open to students of all faiths. The experience begins freshman year, with each student receiving an annually renewable scholarship of up to $10,000 per year for four years of undergraduate study. JOHN S Ozanam Application Ozanam Scholars Application Program Description Part of the Vincentian Institute for Social Action (VISA), the Ozanam Scholars Program is rooted in the themes of academic scholarship, Vincentian leadership, and global citizenship. As members of the program, students have the opportunity to grow academically and elevate their contributions to society through solutions-based research. Students are expected to think critically about applications of social justice both within and outside their academic major and to address their issues through required course work and research, community service, and travel. Grade Requirements: Overall B average and a combined score of 1000 on the SAT (math and critical reading only) or an ACT composite score of 22. 13 ST. JOHN S CATHOLIC SCHOLARS PROGRAM Catholic Scholars Program Faith and Leadership in Action I choose St. John s... For Academics For Faith For Life Catholic Scholars take part in a four-year developmental program that translates faith into action. Students apply for membership as they apply for acceptance to St. John s University. Selected scholars commit themselves to faithbased leadership training, service and prayer, and forming a deeper understanding of what it means to be a scholar and leader inspired by the Catholic tradition. They join a community of committed students who, together with faculty and campus ministers, engage in monthly meetings, lectures, course work, and prayer experiences that deepen their integration of faith and reason. Catholic Scholars assume important leadership roles within the community of faith and service at St. John s University in preparation for becoming faith-inspired leaders for life. 14 Catholic Scholars Program Application The goal of the Catholic Scholars Program scholarship is to enable students to identify clear actions that they can take to promote faith-based leadership and to offer them a foundation that helps them influence society in their life s work. Program Elements As a Catholic Scholar, students: Engage in monthly meetings, formations and activities that offer leadership experiences. Attend Sunday night student Mass and several daily Masses per week on campus. Assume responsibilities for leading faith-based programming on campus, including service to the Church that includes liturgical ministry, music ministry, altar serving, and extraordinary minister of Holy Communion. Membership in the Vincentian Initiative to Advance Leadership (VITAL) or the Catholic Student Community (CSC) and serve as program leaders for selected activities. Participate as an active member of one of the Campus Ministry student groups, including: St. Vincent de Paul Society, Habitat for Humanity, Sinai Praise Dance Ministry, Students for Global Justice, Students for Life, Ladies in God s Hands Together (L.IG.H.T.), Men in God s Hands Together (M.I.G.H.T.), or leadership in devotional prayer such as Monday Night Rosary and Eucharistic Adoration and Holy Hour. Shared theology and Discover New York courses with cohort. Participate in an optional study abroad cohort that immerses students in the Catholic and Vincentian tradition.
