1 Tell us something good FEBRUARY 19, 2018 COMPASSION This week, we have some outstanding submissions from both patients and employees that continue our spotlight on COMPASSION. Take a look at the values listed under Compassion on the T.J. Pledge, and then read these kind words about our fellow T.J. team members. Please keep the notes coming! These messages help to inspire us all to show compassion to our patients, customers and team members every day. see all patients, family members, visitors, coworkers, physicians, and anyone else at T.J. as my customer recognize that each and every interaction I have at T.J. Regional Health matters show kindness and compassion towards my customers at all times be sensitive to the personal and private needs of every customer ALECIA HUDSON & MELISSA WILLIAMS Pavilion Mammography During a recent procedure at the Pavilion, Alecia Hudson and Melissa Williams provided me with exceptional care! Not only did they explain everything that was happening, they continually asked me how I was doing and even held my hand. I cannot express how the simple act of them holding my hand calmed my nerves. Healthcare workers often forget that the things they see every day and consider no big deal are actually a BIG deal to the patient. I am sure Alecia and Melissa have both seen hundreds of these procedures, but they did not treat me like I was just another part of their work day, they genuinely cared for me, which made my experience the best that it could have been. Thank you both for your wonderful care! LAURA SPALDING, Women & Newborn Care After a complicated delivery, I witnessed a nurse provide such compassion to a family that forever changed me. Laura Spalding went above and beyond her duty as a nurse. Not only did she provide excellent care but she exceeded her responsibilty by providing such compassion to the family, and to me she made a difference. Often times there are moments that can be overlooked, but Laura deserves to know what a difference that one day made. OB/GYN, MAMMO & ULTRASOUND TEAMS, BECKY EVANS, DR. MICHAEL SARIDAKIS, AND TRACI ANDERSON On New Year s Day 2018, I found a lump in my left breast. I can still remember the fear and panic that I felt that day. The very next day, I called my OB/GYN s office at the T.J. Health Pavilion, and so began the process of figuring out what the lump was. Thankfully, my story had a happy ending as the lump was benign. I will never be able to thank the team at T.J. enough for being with me on this journey! The staff in mammogram and ultrasound were so kind. Becky in pre-op at the hospital answered all of my questions, and even told me to call her if I thought of anything else I needed. Dr. Saridakis and his surgical team were wonderful, and I can t say enough good about him and nurse Traci in his office. Thank you, T.J.! SHARE YOUR STORIES! We would love to hear how you and your team are showing compassion to include in an upcoming edition of the newsletter. your compassionate examples to bmatthews@tjsamson.org. Names will be drawn for prizes (including those who submit and those who the stories are about)! We look forward to sharing your great examples in upcoming issues. Oh and don't forget these submissions would also make great nominations for our Service Excellence Awards and Daisy Awards!

4 care. In Arizona, a hard drive containing patient information was missing from a desktop computer that was taken out of service. All told, the breaches impacted just 521 patients. But OCR s investigation, launched in 2013, found that Fresenius facilities repeatedly failed to implement policies and procedures to safeguard equipment from theft or encrypt patient information. It marks the first HIPAA settlement of 2018 and comes months after 21st Century Oncology paid $2.3 million for a 2015 data breach. FRESENIUS MEDICAL CARE PAYS $3.5M SETTLEMENT FOR FIVE SEPARATE DATA BREACHES IN 2012 One of the nation's largest dialysis providers has agreed to a $3.5 million settlement with the Office for Civil Rights for five separate data breaches that occurred in Fresenius Medical Care of North America, which operates more than 2,200 dialysis clinics, along with outpatient cardiac and vascular labs and urgent care centers, agreed to the settlement after an OCR investigation revealed the company failed to perform an accurate and thorough risk assessment, which led to five separate data breaches over a five-month period in The breaches, which were reported in 2013, were all linked to some version of theft, according to a resolution agreement (PDF). In Florida and Illinois, desktop computers containing patient information were stolen from two facilities. In Alabama, an unencrypted USB drive was stolen from an employee's The number of breaches, involving a variety of locations and vulnerabilities, highlights why there is no substitute for an enterprise-wide risk analysis for a covered entity, OCR Director Roger Severino said in an announcement. Covered entities must take a thorough look at their internal policies and procedures to ensure they are protecting their patients health information in accordance with the law. Fresenius has been implicated in several other investigations over the past several years including an investigation by the Department of Justice over a premium assistance program and an inquiry from the Kentucky Attorney General regarding potential fraud. In addition to the fine, Fresenius has entered a corrective action plan requiring it to conduct and submit to the Department of Health and Human Services an accurate and through assessment of the potential security risks. The company is also required to review and revise existing security procedures, implement a risk management plan, submit an encryption report and revise policies on device and media controls. Congratulations, Amber Fields! In last week s newsletter, we embedded a prize in an article about Malignant Hyperthermia. The first 50 employees who read the article and responded were rewarded with a ticket to the YMCA fundraiser drawing for a trip to the Caribbean. We are very pleased to announce that Amber Fields, one of our very own T.J. employees, was the YMCA's lucky Grand Prize winner! Congratulations and enjoy your vacation, Amber!
