Everything matters to our patients and families. And we used the same attention to detail when planning amenities for our staff. The new cafeteria is a perfect example.

New features include a deli, more pizza options and a double-sided salad bar. And, after a recent focus group with teen patients, a build-your-own-burrito option is now being added to the new menu.

The new cafeteria opens on Wednesday, June 20 with a limited menu. Full menu options will be available beginning Thursday, June 21.

2 Everything matters to our patients and families. And we used the same attention to detail when planning amenities for our staff. The new cafeteria is a perfect example. Beginning next month, you ll be able to enjoy even more meal options when the cafeteria opens in the lower level of the new main hospital. New features include a deli, more pizza options and a double-sided salad bar. And, after a recent focus group with teen patients, a build-your-own-burrito option is now being added to the new menu. We re giving our customers the ability to tailor menu options to fit their needs and we ll be offering healthy meal choices at each station, explains Kathy Grover, Director of Nutrition Services. With warmer weather just around the corner you can soak up some sunshine and enjoy your lunch outdoors in our new dining courtyard. The Magic Bean, the café in the atrium of the new main hospital, will offer your favorite caffeinated beverages for a quick pick-me-up. And for those of you looking for a healthy indulgence, The Magic Bean will also offer a soft serve yogurt machine with rotating flavors, hard serve frozen yogurt and churned Velvet ice cream, another delicious option that is also low in fat and sugar. Here are some highlights of the new cafeteria 1. We re making it easier to stick to a healthy diet by stocking the cafeteria with a variety of fresh veggie options. An expanded salad bar will include a rotating choice of theme salads such as Caesar, spinach and oriental salads. new cafeteria is equipped with the same pizza oven as California Pizza Kitchen for a fresh hearth2. 3 Our Busy Season When our patient volume grows, we jump into action. For many families, spring brings not only warmer weather but also allergies, colds and other common illnesses. These are also the times when Nationwide Children s most often reaches a patient volume that is close to capacity. An increase in our patient census can mean challenges involving resources, bed availability and patient placement. But even during periods when our resources are stretched, our goal remains the same: ensuring a safe staffing level that provides every patient with the highest quality of care. How do we respond? We tackle high patient volume with a One Team approach. We use a proactive contingency plan to address peaks in patient volume. Nationwide Children s staff keep a close eye on indicators that might raise our patient volume, including diagnosis types, emergency department volume, historical data and the daily number of patients. Our staffing plans take into consideration the needs of every patient. When a patient s needs exceed the planned workload for our direct care staff, we identify additional nurses who can provide direct patient care. Support departments also increase their staffing, including services like nutrition and environmental services. Thank you. The past few months have been incredibly busy. But our amazing staff has stepped up and continued to provide safe, quality care to our patients and their families. You ve looked out for both our patients and one another and you ve ensured that we all hold ourselves to being Zero Heroes. Study Looks at Use of Nitric Oxide in Premature Infants According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one in every eight babies born in the U.S. is premature. At Nationwide Children s, keeping premature infants healthy is part of what we do every day. An increase in patient volume keeps Kelli Jacoby, RN, on her toes. To help prevent complications caused by prematurity, some doctors use inhaled nitric oxide (ino) to treat premature infants. However, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) have concluded that there is no evidence to support the routine use of ino in premature infants who require respiratory support. In a study published in Pediatrics, researchers at Nationwide Children s found that though there is little evidence to support its use, many premature infants throughout the United States still receive ino during their stay in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Nationwide Children s faculty and members of the Ohio Perinatal Research Network completed a retrospective study using data from the Child Health Corporation of America s Pediatric Health Information Database. Researchers studied data from 22,699 premature infants admitted to NICUs in 37 different U.S. children s hospitals over three-and-a-half-years. Researchers found large variations in the use of ino to treat premature infants. Variations ranged from the age of the infant when ino treatment began to the average length of treatment. Despite years of data unable to support its off-label use, ino treatment in preterm infants remains common in U.S. children s hospital NICUs, said Michael R. Stenger, MD, Nationwide Children s neonatologist and lead study author. This study shows there is a need for further development of evidence-based standards of care to avoid unnecessary and costly treatment

Sophia Schumm, daughter of neonatology nurse Billie Jo Schumm, is one of the Patient Champions who will inspire runners and walkers of the Nationwide Children s Hospital Columbus Marathon and ½ Marathon in October. One of Our Own Patient Champions Billie Jo Schumm has plenty of experience with sick babies she is a neonatology nurse here at Nationwide Children s. So when her daughter Sophia was born a month early with five little holes in her heart, Billie Jo knew that her baby was in good hands at Nationwide Children s. Sophia s journey makes her a perfect fit to represent Nationwide Children s as a Patient Champion during the Nationwide Children s Hospital Columbus Marathon & ½ Marathon this year. The marathon on October 21 will mark exactly one year from Sophia s open heart surgery performed at Nationwide Children s, when doctors told Billie Jo that Sophia s heart was running a marathon to keep her body going.
