Employee of the Month The weekly newsletter for employees and friends of McLaren Bay Region February 13, 2018 Vol. 35, Issue 6 StatLine After transferring from McLaren Central, Marta has grown to love her McLaren Bay Region Family. Marta Gron has worked for McLaren Bay Region for 1 and half years, as a Patient Access Rep. Her job entails registering patients, making sure patients get put in beds, going into rooms and speaking with patients, and registering lab work. I do a lot of registration and speaking with Marta Gron Patient Access Rep 1, Patient Access different people, Marta said. My goal is to become a nurse, says Marta. Marta originally started her education at Central Michigan University and decided to switch to Delta College after discovering that she wanted to become a nurse and that Central Michigan didn t have a nursing program. Marta began working for McLaren Central while attending Central Michigan and transferred to McLaren Bay Region when she switched to Delta College to pursue her nursing career. Marta s favorite part about working at McLaren Bay Region is the people. I love everyone I work with and I enjoy being able to meet different people every day, said Marta. There is always something new and Marta enjoys the new challenges that every day brings. 2 StatLine February 13, 2018 American Heart Association Donates Red Hats Volunteers for the American Heart Association are celebrating American Heart Month by knitting red hats for newborns. The Little Hats, Big Hearts project raises awareness of heart disease, the number one killer of Americans, and congenital heart defects, the most common type of birth defect in the country and the leading killer of infants with birth defects. Volunteers from across Michigan have knitted nearly 4000 hats that will be given to all babies born at 23 of the State s hospitals during the month of February. McLaren Bay Region has received 75 red hats and our volunteers spent more than 100 hours knitting them. All hats have been washed, sorted and individually packaged with health information for moms and babies. The Children s Heart Foundation is a national sponsor of the project. While all babies at participating hospitals receive a Little Hat, some of those infants have very special hearts. Congenital heart defects are structural problems with the heart present at birth. They result when a mishap occurs during heart development soon after conception and often before the mother is aware that she is pregnant. 3 StatLine February 13, 2018 Highest Quality Echos Achieved! McLaren Bay Region recently completed a randomized audit for our echocardiography lab. It was requested by ICAL, the accrediting body that ensures the highest quality of echos are performed. We are pleased to announce we passed with flying colors. This is in thanks to the outstanding work completed everyday by our echo techs and reading physicians. The Echo Lab at McLaren Bay Region performs roughly 550 echos, 100 TEEs, and 60 stress echos per month. Thank you again for placing McLaren Bay Region at the forefront of Cardiac Medicine! A special Thank You to Jamie McCrary and Dr. Masri for the hard work put in to complete the audit! Dave Steele Announced as Nursing Supervisor As announced by Bridget Cashin, Dave Steele has been named Nursing Supervisor. Dave has worked at McLaren Bay Region for over 18 years. He has a wealth of knowledge and experience in the Emergency Department, as Staff Nurse, Coordinator and Nurse Manager. He has an Associate s Degree in Nursing from Delta College and is currently pursuing a Bachelor s of Science Degree at University of Michigan. In addition, Dave has participated in a number of Lean and Kaizen events throughout his years at MBR and has been involved in many community service initiatives. Her ability to do this with every patient translates into awesome patient flow in the ER, happy patients and families, increased satisfaction scores, and provides the ER with the ability to actually move patients up into our hospital. She has the most positive, friendly, helpful attitude you are going to find. She is an asset to the bed control / admitting department. She is fantastic at her job, and there is significant positivity when she is present. She is always easy to work with and is approachable. You know things will run smoothly when she is running bed placement, and we appreciate all her hard work. Marta was born and raised in Poland until she was 7 years old. She still has many family members in Poland and enjoys seeing and speaking to them. My family and I try to visit my family in Poland once a year. When I am unable to visit, I enjoy talking to them through Facebook video chat, said Marta. In her free time Marta likes to go swimming and catch up on her sleep. Recreational Therapy month My ability is stronger than my disability Recreational therapy is defined by the American Therapeutic Recreation Association (ATRA) as a health care and human service discipline that delivers treatment services designed to restore, remediate and/ or rehabilitate functional capabilities for individuals with injuries, chronic illnesses or other types of disabling conditions. In addition, recreational therapists plan, direct, deliver and evaluate recreation-based interventions for individuals with illnesses and/or disabling conditions. Recreational therapists, also called CTRS s (Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialists), offer patients an array of programs aimed at restoring, remediating and rehabilitating a person s level of functioning and independence by engaging in purposeful recreation/ leisure. RT s may work with one client to restore their motor functioning and another to build confidence. Recreational therapists go the extra mile to plan their activities based on their clients specific interests. Some examples of intervention modalities include creative arts, table top leisure and adaptive horticulture. They offer adaptive equipment such as card holders to allow people the ability to participate in leisure activities. Therapeutic Recreation Awareness Week has been promoted by the Canadian Therapeutic Recreation Association (CTRA) since its inception in In 2012, the American Therapeutic Recreation Association (ATRA) proclaimed February as Therapeutic Recreation Month, marking the first time in history that Therapeutic Recreation Awareness Month was celebrated internationally by the Canadian Therapeutic Recreation Association, the American Therapeutic Recreation Rose Smith, Recreational Therapist Jean Colby, Volunteer Kelly, Service Dog Association and the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification. Professional recognition is granted by the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC). The most common way to become a certified recreational therapist is by attaining a bachelor s degree in recreational therapy, completing a 14 week minimum internship and successfully completing the NCTRC Certification Exam.
