3 Introducing T.J.'s 1557 Coordinator: Casey franklin Do you recognize the guy in the picture? If you do, you might remember that he was The Most Interesting Man In The World. Or at least he was according to a certain beverage company based out of Moctezuma. The reason we have to say he WAS The Most Interesting Man In The World is because that beverage company replaced this charismatic 77-year old spokesman, Jonathan Goldsmith, with a new, 41-year old French spokesman back in 2016, citing the reason that the company wished to attract younger drinkers. They denied that they felt Mr. Goldsmith had aged out of the role, but when you consider their motivation for replacing him, are you compelled to believe that might have been the case, regardless of what the company said? Mr. Goldsmith never did accuse that company of age discrimination, but companies across America need to be conscientious about avoiding any possible indications that discrimination has occurred, and not just when it comes to discrimination based on age. Consider the Office of Civil Rights Section 1557, which is a Federal law that prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, age, or disability in certain health programs or activities. If you ll recall, that was the new law passed in 2010 that required us to initiate certain interventions for non-discrimination purposes, such as the implementation of our language interpretation and translation services. (All the new posters you saw go up with the 15 language taglines, as well as all the new laptops and phone equipment that were brought out was thanks to this rule!) T.J. Regional Health takes that law, and our responsibilities surrounding it, very seriously. It s not just because there are possible legal ramifications in the event that discrimination should occur; it s because all of us, as an organization, should want to have the privilege of saying that we consistently treat all people who seek our care as equals, regardless of the color of their skin, the year they were born, or any other factor that might influence the treatment of an individual in this imperfect world. So what happens if we neglect to do that? What happens if our most honorable intentions fail us and discrimination occurs, or even if it is brought to light that it MAY have occurred? Outside of the disappointment and shame surrounding a situation like this, there really are potential legal consequences in the event that an act of discrimination can be proven. So what do you do? There are guidelines that mandate a specific course of action once discrimination has been alleged: If you, as a T.J. employee, are made aware of a situation where discrimination against a patient has been alleged, you should first inform the patient that you will notify the T.J. Regional Health 1557 Coordinator. (Contact info follows this article.) Share the 1557 Coordinator s contact information with the patient, and let them know we will be in touch with them soon. Be sure that the way you address the patient shows sympathy and concern for their complaint, and assure them that we take such allegations very seriously. Do not in any way indicate to the patient agreement or dissention with their accusation- be polite, but do not feel obligated to register an opinion regarding their complaint. From that point forth, the investigation into the complaint will be managed by the 1557 Coordinator. Coming soon, be on the watch for a Health Stream assignment that goes further into depth as to what discrimination might look like, and what we can all do to prevent it. In the meantime, make fairness and equality your own personal principles when providing for every patient s needs. Each human being on this Earth deserves compassion and fair treatment when seeking medical attention, and we are in perfect positions as healthcare providers and their supporting ancillary teams to deliver those things to any individual who comes to us for the care that they require. If you have any questions about this article, or if you receive a complaint of discrimination, contact: T.J. REGIONAL HEALTH 1557 COORDINATOR CASEY FRANKLIN (270) kjfranklin@tjsamson.org CASEY FRANKLIN, The Most Interesting 1557 Coordinator in the World.

4 Build-A Bed Project Needs Volunteers COMPASSION AMANDA TURNER, BECCA SMITH & DR. WILLIAM CHO T.J. Samson Pediatrics Unit The following recognition of compassion was received from Casey Franklin, Patient Advocate. I received a phone call today from a patient who stated that she and her husband were recently inpatients on our Pediatric unit, which also sometimes accepts adult patients as needed. Both the patient and her husband had been admitted with the flu and severe accompanying symptoms. The patient said, We were SO sick, but the two nurses who cared for us, Amanda and Becca, were just the best nurses I ve ever seen. She noted they were so good to us, and we will never, ever forget them. She also stated that Dr. Cho, one of our Hospitalists who also cared for them, was also really good. Just fantastic! The patient wrapped up my chat with her by saying that she and her husband live near Monroe County and they typically go to Tompkinsville for their medical needs, but after this most recent stay, We will always, always go back to T.J.. This, to me, is the perfect example of the compassion we are promoting here at T.J. Regional Health. The T.J. Pledge calls for us to show kindness and compassion towards our customers at all times, and to be sensitive to the personal and private needs of every customer. This couple was ill and needed care, and they received it in perfect measure here at T.J., even to the extent they felt compelled to call and let us know about it. A thousand thanks to Amanda, Becca, and Dr. Cho for exemplifying our Compassion Pledge with the amazing care you provided to this couple! Caverna School System is looking for volunteers to help build beds for needy children in the area on Saturday, April 28th at Caverna Elementary School. The build-a bed consists of building twin size bed frames, passing out twin mattresses and assembling bedtime baskets: that go with the beds. The baskets contain toothbrushes, toothpaste, blankets/ comforters, nightlights, books, stuffed animals, twin sheets and pajamas. Suggestions for helping with the project include the following: Donate lumber/materials to build the frames Donate mattresses Donate bedding, toothpaste, toothbrushes, nightlights, etc. Donate blankets or quilts Make a tax-deductible monetary donation Volunteer to help build the frames Glynis Karnop with T.J. Laboratory Services has volunteered to be team lead for T.J. Regional Health on this project. If you are interested in helping in any way, please contact Glynis at extension 4162 or Dana Powell at extension SHARE YOUR STORIES! We would love to hear how you and your team are showing compassion to include in an upcoming edition of the newsletter. your compassionate examples to bmatthews@tjsamson.org. Names will be drawn for prizes (including those who submit and those who the stories are about)! We look forward to sharing your great examples in upcoming issues. Oh and don't forget these submissions would also make great nominations for our Service Excellence Awards and Daisy Awards!

5 WELCOME, LINDA BRAGG! Director of Quality at T.J. Please join us in welcoming Linda Bragg, our new Director of Quality. Linda is originally from Bardstown. She received her BSN from the University of Louisville, her MSN from Bellarmine University, and her Doctorate of Nursing Practice from Western Kentucky University. Linda is married to Ray, a native of Glasgow and a retired respiratory therapist. Linda and Ray have two sons and a 5 year old granddaughter. They are expecting another granddaughter in March. She enjoys spending time with her my family, many of whom live in nearby Bardstown. She says, "Any any activities near or on the water (lakes, pools, oceans, etc.), I m there!" When asked what attracted her to the T.J. organization, Linda said, "My husband and his family are from Glasgow, and it is very important to both of us to be close to our families." "One of the most rewarding roles in my nursing career revolves around working with others to provide excellent care to our patients and their families. It was clear to me during multiple interviews that the vision of leaders at T.J. are in sync with my values and beliefs," she also said. Linda is an active member of the Kentucky Nurse s Association (KNA) Government Affairs Committee. On February 6, 2018, approximately 200 nurses across the state attended the legislative sessions in support of priorities that impact nursing practice. Linda shares, "I have a professional and personal interest in improving access and services to those in our state suffering from substance abuse disorders. During the regular session of the KY General Assembly, nurses in Kentucky were recognized and received commendation for having a tremendous positive impact on the quality of health care of the patients we care for in the Commonwealth."
