In North America, the earliest bowyers created these highly functional pieces of hunting equipment from many species of trees as well as some shrub species. To make bows of weaker woods, the primitive bowyer simply made them longer and/or wider or reinforced them with material like sinew or rawhide. Come hear Kent McAdoo, University of Nevada Cooperative Extension, Elko, share his 13 years of experience making primitive bows. He will demonstrate some fundamental primitive bow construction techniques. The presentation takes place March 18 at the Carson City / Storey County UNCE conference room, 6:30 8:00 p.m. 4 Paws Hosts March Fun Match 4 Paws 4-H Carson dog club is making plans for their Annual All Breed Conformation and Obedience Fun Match and fundraiser. 4 Former 4-H er opens Artisans Café Danny Works, former award-winning member of the Arrowhead Livestock 4-H Club and son of leaders Marena and Roger Works shows that being a 4-H er can pay off in business life. He has opened the new Artisans Cafe and Gift Shop inside the Brewery Arts Center with his partner "It's been pretty steady," he said. "After only a few weeks, it's hard to tell how things are going to turn out, but I think we'll be good." The restaurant serves about 50 people per six-hour weekday shift, Works said. "We've got about 14 lawyer offices and a couple of schools in the area," he said. "Everyone's always in a hurry. They can put in a fax order and just run in and pick it up, or they can stay here for a while. The main thing is, they can walk here rather than getting in the car and driving across town." Once the business establishes itself, Works said he hopes to set up a small area where musicians and spoken-word artists can perform. "A little bit of entertainment would be great," he said. "There really aren't too many places that do that around here." While there are no immediate plans to expand its hours, the cafe will stay open with plans to serve patrons during concerts and other select nighttime events, Works said. Previously Danny sold his wraps and other specialties at various 4-H events. Danny was a 4-H er for fifteen years and raised pigs. He is currently a swine leader for Arrowhead Livestock Club. Way to go Danny!

5 Instructor-Leaders Susan and Desiree Rogers recently held Rabbit 101, a hands-on, information-packed workshop. It was held January 3 at Fuji Park Exhibit Hall. Two dozen leaders, parents and youth learned tattoo techniques, health care and some holistic care practices. Rabbit 101 Thank you Susan and Desiree. 8 February 20, 2009 Issue 5 unce.unr.edu/counties/carson-storey/ Get Grip on Primitive Bows and Arrows Wednesday, March 18, 6:30 8:00 p.m. Carson City / Storey County UNCE 2621 Northgate Lane, Suite 12 Call to Register, Have you ever wondered how Native Americans made simple wood bows powerful enough to kill a bison or moose? Speaker Kent McAdoo has been making and shooting traditional/primitive bows for thirteen years and will demonstrate how to make these beautiful and effective weapons. For several thousand years, indigenous cultures throughout the world fashioned simple wood bows and arrows used for hunting and warfare. In North America, as on other continents, the earliest bowyers employed materials at hand to fashion these highly functional weapons that were very powerful and accurate in the hands of a skilled archer. Historic literature is replete with descriptions of the amazing power of these weapons, including tales of animals the size of bison being shot completely through and layers of body armor being pierced, all by arrows flung from wood bows. The variety of materials used by Native Americans indicates that the most important consideration is not what a bow is made of, but how it is built. In truth, many species of trees in North America, as well as some shrub species, have been used for making functional bows. The speaker will review the diversity of species used for bow construction, as well as some fundamental construction principles practiced by North American indigenous cultures.

22 Dear Leaders and Parents of Carson City and Storey County 4-H ers, Survey Results Staff and I wanted to thank you for responding to our 4-H survey. We sent out 150 surveys and received 30 responses for a 20% response rate. We wanted to hear from you to make sure 4-H was working for our youth and our volunteers. And, IT IS! Responses were overwhelmingly positive. Most of the people who responded were parents of 4-H youth, many involved in the program for one to five years although we do have some who have been involved for 10, 14 and 15 years. Wow! That s impressive! Most people have one or two children who participate in 4-H, although a few have more. These children have been involved in 4-H from one year to 15 years, paralleling their parents involvement in most cases. One very impressive piece of information was that 25 people said their club(s) has goals and that the goals are being met. As you know, 4-H is about youth developing life skills with the participation of caring adults, our wonderful leaders. Twenty-six responders stated that their children were mastering a skill; 25 that their children were gaining a feeling of competence; 24 said their children have developed a positive self-concept and knowledge useful throughout life; 21 felt youth had improved self-worth and ability to work as a team; 19 said 4-H developed strong personal values, concern for others and the ability to solve problems; and 17 responded that their children had improved ability to make healthy lifestyle choices and were learning workforce preparedness. When asked if the leaders and resource 4 people were doing a good job of developing life skills in the children 24 people said yes and 1 said no. 4-H is meeting our goals thanks to our leaders and involved parents. Areas that need improvement include more communication shared between clubs and that everyone should be informed and invited to all club events. Some people didn t hear about things until after they had happened. Most people prefer information via , others by mail and a few by phone, although we were all asked to leave a detailed message with time, location, etc. rather than saying Call me about the club. There are many community service projects that clubs want to support and already do support. I will get the list to the Leader s Council. We, both staff and clubs, have to honor everyone s time and not ask people to do too much as everyone is involved in many activities besides 4-H. Twenty-six people felt it was important for youth, parents and leaders to participate in 4-H activities outside their club such as fundraisers, community service and celebrations. Two said this wasn t important for youth and three said it wasn t important for adults.

23 One comment was Some parents are too involved in the activities and should let the kids do the decision making and the work. You can tell when a parent has completed the activity for the kid. As long as mommy and daddy help with all the activities, I don t think the kids learn anything. When asked are you happy with your interaction with the 4-H staff connected to our club/project, 19 responded yes, 0 no, one sometimes and one not always. There were nine people who didn t respond. What works about our staff is they are available, helpful, approachable, Everything, they are exceptional, great attitudes interest, communication and responsive. What could work better? Better communication in a timely manner (this was for staff and leaders); having more staff to divide the work they are sometimes overstretched; less talk from adults; more explanations of state rules and regs; and more time. Some changes responders suggested: offer a cooking class better annual/quarterly calendars age changes for camp no changes; going well more leaders involved in the council making better informed decisions more interest with youth coming up through the ranks and less concern about teens who are disinterested and outgrowing the program more financial support Survey Results...continued more staff to meet the growing needs of the community maybe a grandparent/parent volunteer in the office to help staff another staff person who concentrates on the rules and regs stuff and keeps applications, membership lists, awards lists, deadlines, portfolio and fair entries, Expo and camp entries and accountability issues separate from the staff who perform hands-on training and work with 4-H members during meetings and events. new brighter theme promote the clubs better among other clubs and to the community. need a list of all clubs with their dates, days, times and locations of meetings [This is a regular part of our new e-zine and is on our 4-H web page carson-storey/] recruitment of kids from the schools, youth groups, etc. I would like to see more 4-H clubs get involved in community service projects. Thanks again for the great work you do for our youth! JoAnne Skelly Extension Educator 5

26 Meet Mary Ploppins! Students at Fremont Elementary School practically had a cow Friday, March 20, when Bessie and her 2-weekold calf, owned by Rachel Andersen from Arrowhead Livestock Club, came to visit. Erin Lehman, the school s volunteer coordinator, organized the Cow Plop fundraiser, which turned out to be a cash cow, raking in $7,000. Tickets were sold for $5 apiece, with $500 going to the person whose ticket coincided with the first plop. The second won $200, and a random draw awarded $100. Students spent the week, dubbed Cowabunga Week, learning about farm animals and agriculture. We wanted the kids to have fun and help our school raise money, Lehman said. At the same time, we wanted it to be very educational. We realize that not a lot of kids get the chance to touch a pig or be near a cow. A two-week-old calf was at Fremont Elementary School on Friday, March 20, as part of the Cow Plop fundraiser. 29 Nevada 4-H Capital Days March 1-2, 2009 Special from the Nevada Appeal, Carson Scene, March 15, 2009 More than 40 students from as far away as Clark and White Pine Counties, attended the two-day H Capital Days event March 1-2 in Carson City. During the event the 4-Hers had breakfast with dignitaries, toured government buildings, and debated upcoming legislation. You are doing a wonderful job representing the youth of this state before our legislature, University of Nevada, Reno, Provost Marc Johnson told the 4-Hers during a Legislative Breakfast held in the foyer of the State Library and Archives. Olivia Pishnak, a 16-year-old sophomore from Carson City, was excited to attend her first Capital Days events but nervous to sing the Star Spangled Banner in front of her peers at the breakfast. Students have been tracking the Nevada legislature since it began its 75th session. A mock hearing was an opportunity for students to not only meet legislators but act as legislators as well. 55 Congratulations to Scholarship Recipients! 4 Kelsey Conklin, a senior at Douglas High School, was one of the recipients of the Carson City / Storey County Leaders Council Scholarships. Kelsey will attend UNR in the fall. I am undecided on my major currently because I have many different interests, sports, math, agriculture, medicine, and teaching. My favorite memory has to do with 4-H camp. After my first year as a camp counselor, I went to State Fair, and looked at the scrapbooks entered. One of the girls from my cabin had a page on 4-H camp. On that page she listed her favorite counselors, and I was listed! It felt great to realize I had made an impact, and that she remembered me! Mary Smith, a senior at Carson High School, was a recipient of the Carson City/ Storey County Leaders Council Scholarships. Mary plans to attend Western Community College for two years, and then finish her studies at UNR. She plans to study Animal Sciences and major in Equine Management and Training. My favorite thing about 4-H is the family atmosphere. For me, 4-H is another family. Everyone is always on your side. Thank you CC/SC Leader s Council for helping me reach my goals!

59 8 Carson City/Storey County 4-H Council 2621 Northgate Lane, Suite 15 Carson City, NV H Carson City/Storey County Council Meeting Minutes, May 11, 2009 In attendance: D.D. Monroe, Linda Thompson, Jim Barcellos, Susan Rogers, Judy Smith, Deb Cook, and Rich Knight The minutes of the last meeting were approved. The treasurer s reports: as of our balance is $ A copy of E-Zine was available and Jim asked that any items (photos, articles, announcements) that you want published in E-Zine be made available to Terry by the 15 th of each month. Jim was also going to talk to Teri to see if the council could have their meeting minutes included each month so that all 4-H leaders and members could see what was happening at council meetings. On that note, Geoff thanks the leaders who have started attending council meetings from 4-Paws and Shooting Sports. We encourage all clubs to have a representative at council meetings. A certificate of appreciation to council service was given to D.D. and Linda. Other council members were recognized at the 4-H BBQ in April. Crazy Crafters is a new club led by Sandy Hawkins. Sandy has asked to start small at first with fewer members until they get going. The council welcomes her to the fold. Susan Rogers finally got her check for winning the window decorating contest last fall and the council will try to get more clubs involved before the next contest in October. There is only one more training date available for the clay shoot coming up and it is June 28 th 9:30 a.m. at the Carson City Gun Club. This is an opportunity to earn money for your club or the council by working as a scorekeeper at their shoot. The decision was made to go ahead and commit to Corley Ranch to grow the pumpkins we will sell at the Pumpkin Patch/Harvest Craft Fair. If we commit to buying 250 pumpkins, we can buy them for about $1.75 each. Susan will arrange that with Corley Ranch. The outstanding items for this event are: a cover letter explaining the new combined event to the crafters, (Deb), applications mailed to last years crafters, (Geoff), getting information on to on-line web sites, (Geoff), and verifying that the Indian Taco vendor is still interested, (by letter). We also discussed having our new craft club host the indoor crafters as all hands and clubs are needed outdoors to run the out side activities. The corporate scholarship committee (Judy) was given a new name and web address to call regarding our UNR guidelines regarding soliciting donations. Jim will get in touch with Preston Sides at pricklypear@charter.net. We will proceed from there. For our community outreach activities our super shopper Susan Rogers was able to buy four sleeping bags for only $3.00 each, and Wal-Mart donated a bag of travel size toiletries to be used at camp. The council reviewed the Camp Scholarship Form and revamped it to require the form plus one letter stating the circumstances for the request with a sign off by a club leader who will then get the letter and form to the Council President and Vice President for approval. The date these both need to be in to the club leaders is May 26 th.

64 3 THE SILVER SADDLE RANCH WILD HORSE AND BURRO PROJECT The project from a Mom s perspective. Mary Elizabeth gravitated to stories, books and movies about animals since she was a small child. Specifically, she loved dogs and horses. Even more specifically, she loved anything to do with black stallions. Fast forward to when she turned 15 years old. She had been in the 4-Paws 4-H Dog Club for a number of years when she first volunteered to work at Farm Days at Fuji Park. She came home gushing about a beautiful black B.L.M. horse on exhibit that she got to be around. No doubt about it, she was smitten by Koal and talked about him endlessly to anyone who would listen. One whose ear she caught was Sandy Wallin from the Carson City / Storey County Cooperative Extension Office. Sandy had been part of the first group of girls and mothers who implemented, with Stan Zuber and the B.L.M., the Gift Horse Gang. After the first year and the girls had received their horses, the program was on hiatus. Sandy arranged with Stan for Mary and me to share care of Koal and the burros, Essie and Copper, with two other mother-daughter couples. The timing could not have been more perfect. Mary Elizabeth had a miserable freshman year in high school. She was a target of bullying that became a physical and emotional daily occurrence. Mary Elizabeth also developed some severe medical conditions in her freshman year. At one point during her four years in high school she had to do a semester at home on the home-bound program. Doctor appointments, emergency room visits, hospital visits, and test after test after test was pretty much our routine for four years.

65 4 The one consistently positive thing for her during this time was Koal and the burros. Even on those days when she was sick as a dog, she would haul herself into the corral. Those were the times when the magic happened. She could forget about being sick, and doctors and mean kids at school. She could just be in the moment with the horse and burros. Koal especially could bring a time of peace and quietness into her daily life. Even today, he does a lot to improve her mood and outlook. Since January, Mary and I have been doing the twice daily care of the animals by our selves. This is the third year we have been in the program, and it has been hard to make some friends and family understand how and why we made such a large commitment (at least hours a week) to a horse we don t own. I know that we have received more from this program then we have given. What my daughter got from this wonderful horse in particular is invaluable. The lessons learned went beyond horsemanship to include responsibility, resourcefulness, and perseverance. Koal and the donkeys will leave the Silver Saddle Ranch when Stan retires from the B.L.M. in August and at some point, the city will take over management of the ranch. Mary Elizabeth starts college in August. We are both so grateful to have been given the opportunity to participate in this program and wish to thank both Sandy and Stan for their part in it. It s been a privilege to watch my daughter and a black horse fall in love with each other and while we both dread the day it will end, I don t think that it is over for Mary and Koal. It is my strongest hope that they can find a way to stay in each other s lives as he already has a home in her heart. ]âwç få à{

She needs the information by the 15 th of each month. Geoff will contact the leader of the Krazee Krafters (Sandy Hawkins) to see if her group would be interested in hosting the inside crafters at the next Pumpkin Patch/Craft Fair. The items still pending on the Pumpkin Patch to do list include the following: application cover letter explaining the combined event (Deb), applications sent out to all old and new craft vendors (Geoff and Deb), PSA sent out to different media outlets and venues (Geoff), Judy Fishburn contacting the vendor who made Indian Taco s (Geoff), and contacting any crafters that may be interested in showing in this years craft show (all 4-H members, leaders and parents). Susan reported that our pumpkins would be planted this weekend. The extension office has offered to provide badges and business cards to the council members. The final format on how those will look is being discussed. The council has discussed that we hope to be able to set funds aside to be available each year for scholarship assistance to 4-H Camp just as we do for college scholarships. We agreed that our fund raising efforts are critical to both of those items. Jim has contacted Preston Sides, who is our UNR/4-H resource for fund raising guidelines. He has agreed to meet with our committee and council officers in July. Susan Rogers has asked Rich to find out what items are regularly needed at camp so that she can watch for sales and clearances to purchase them. Again we remind all clubs that we need your attendance at council meetings and this includes all members, leaders and parents. Mark your calendar! 4-H Council Meeting July 13, :30 p.m.

The University of Nevada employs only United States citizens and aliens lawfully authorized to work in the United States. TIPS FOR A GOOD POSTER A good poster will make people STOP, READ, and REMEMBER. Read the rules/guidelines carefully and follow the directions. Do some research about the topic. Go to the Web sites listed in this brochure. Be sure the information that you put on the poster is correct. Think of your poster as a billboard advertisement on this topic. THINK & BE CREATIVE. Come up with a catchy idea or ideas. Start out by drawing or sketching your idea or ideas onto regular paper. Ask adults to critique your ideas and tell you what they think. Use a pencil rst and do ALL the sketching/drawing, but pencil markings must be erased for the nal poster so draw lightly. Use a ruler to lightly draw lines on your paper for the title or theme or slogan (remember to erase pencil marks). Be neat. Try not to smudge the pencil or markers. Be clean. Take breaks and go wash your hands often. Lettering should be 1 to 2 inches tall so it is easy to read from a distance. You can use stencils to help you do neat lettering. Green, red, blue, or black letters look best on white paper. Do not write long sentences, but use short phrases. Be sure that all your words are spelled correctly. Do not run your letters and words all together. Leave space between each word. Do not use di erent colors for each word or letter. This is hard to read. Do not put lots of information on the paper. This is too cluttered. Draw a picture or pictures that help to teach your idea or message. Do not draw really small or put too many drawings on your paper. When you are happy with your drawing, you are ready to start coloring. Color the poster with colored pencils or crayons. Outline your coloring with ne tipped markers. 79 Radon: Radon is a colorless, odorless, and tasteless gas. It is also radioactive, formed by the natural decay of uranium in rock, soil, and water. Low levels of uranium occur widely in the Earth s crust in all 50 states. Radon gas moves through the ground to the surface, and can enter homes and buildings. There is no way of telling how much radon is present unless it is tested. The Surgeon General states that radon is the leading cause of lung cancer for nonsmokers in the U.S. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates that radon causes about 20,000 deaths from lung cancer annually in the U.S. The Goals: The National Safety Council (NSC), in partnership with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, sponsors a National Radon Poster Contest. The goals are to raise awareness about the harmful e ects of elevated levels of indoor radon gas and to increase the number of homes tested for radon. The Contest: All children in states, territories, tribal nations, and Department of Defense (DoD) are encouraged to participate in the radon poster contest. Judging panels will select winners and runner-ups in each state and territory for entry in the national contest. In Nevada, poster entries must be submitted to University of Nevada Cooperative Extension s Nevada Radon Education Program, 5305 Mill St., Reno, NV Contact Megan Long at RADON10 ( ) for more information. National Radon Poster Contest Guidelines and Criteria The Prize: In Nevada, the top 10 winning posters will receive a $25 check. The overall state winner will receive a $50 check. The top three winning entries will then be submitted to the NSC as Nevada s entries for the national contest. The winning national poster will be unveiled at an awards ceremony in Washington, D.C., in January The national winner, a parent, and teacher (or sponsoring organization s representative) will win an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C., to participate in the ceremony. The national winning poster will be reproduced into a nationally distributed poster. Eligibility: Children, ages 9-14, enrolled in a public, private, territorial, tribal, DoD, or home school, or through a sponsoring club (such as an art, computer, or science club, scouting organization, or 4-H club) are eligible. Poster Topics: One of the following radon topics must be depicted in the artwork: 1. What is radon? 2. Where does radon come from? 3. How does radon get into our homes? 4. Radon can cause lung cancer. 5. Test your home for radon. Artwork Requirements: Artwork must be original. Student name must not be on the front of the artwork. Posters should have a title on the front. The topic and title must be on the Artwork Submission Form (available at org/issues/radon). Entries should be on white paper, no larger than 28 x 22, but 14 x 22 is preferred. Materials may include crayon, markers, paint (watercolor, tempera, acrylic), collage, photographs, or computer graphics. Lettering and message should be large enough to reproduce well. All pencil markings should be erased. Copyrighted characters (such as Snoopy), product logos, and trademarked or brand names cannot be used. 100 4 Rabbit 101 Workshop Never Fails to Impress Above: Desiree answers questions about rabbits. 4 H Bouncing Bunnies rabbit club leaders, Desiree and Susan Rogers, held their second Rabbit 101 workshop August 15 at Fuji Park Exhibit Hall. Twenty 4 H ers from Carson City and Fallon attended this educational hands on event. Attendees learned basic information on life span, teeth, heart rate, general health and housing options. Attendees received in depth practical and holistic information on how to successfully transport and care for show rabbits and deal with overstressed rabbits. Sprinkling a bit of real chamomile tea from a tea bag over rabbit food calms bunnies when attending lengthy shows. Feeding bunnies a bit of warm wheat toast with thinly sliced banana mashed on top will help stressed out rabbits when traveling. Above, Below and Right: Desiree teaches Rabbit 101

101 5 Rabbit 101 Workshop (continued) Susan offered an array of information on herbal remedies for bunnies which, when applied with a ration of common sense, should help hold down unnecessary trips to the vet. Did you know rabbits can act depressed? Bunnies that appear mopey can get a lift from a spring dandelion tonic. Either leaves or flowers can reenergize your bunny. Berries help cool bunnies that travel in the heat. Comfrey is good for healing and developing healthy bones and teeth. Aimee Faubus, from L.A. Hearne Feed Company in King City, CA, spoke on the rabbit s digestive process and the need for good nutrition. Following Desiree and Susan s instruction and Aimee s presentation, 4 H ers practiced hands on tattooing, and teeth and nail care. 107 11 Storey County Youth at National 4 H Shooting Sports Match June found Bryce James and mom Terry in Grand Island, Nebraska representing Nevada at the National 4 H Shooting Sports Match. Bryce is a member of Comstock Hot Shots and Carson City Hot Shots. Terry is certified at the state level in Air Pistol, Air Rifle and Shotgun and serves as a leader in both Storey County and Carson City. Although Nevada did not send a full team this year, the James decided it was time for Bryce to stretch his wings and get involved at the national 4 H Shooting Sports level. During the four day event Bryce competed in Small bore Rifle Silhouette, Small bore CMP Team, and Small bore Rifle 3P. Bryce stated the experience, although challenging, was worth the effort due to the high level of sportsmanship and camaraderie he found among his fellow shooters. 4 H ers from all over the country readily shared tips on how to increase his shooting skills. 131 3 Krazee Krafters Club Update Sandy Hawkins, Leader The Krazee Krafters started the H year with several activities. Besides enjoying and running the Cookie Decorating Booth at the 4-H Pumpkin Patch on Oct. 3, they elected officers, completed two crafts and took a field trip to Lattin Farms, Fallon. Senior officers for the new year are: President, Nora Streng; VP, Jeremy Green; Secretary, Katrina Ingersoll; Treasurer, McKenna Mitchell; Photographers, Lydia Cohen and Penelope Eisenhour; and Historians, Tristin Parrish and Mykelti O Brien. Junior officers are: President, Rylan Fancher; VP, Brigette Quintero; Secretary, Courtney Green; Treasurer, Ashley Fitzpatrick; and Photographer, Bryar Fancher. Crafts this month included making vases out of recycled milk cartons. Using glue, different colors and textures of yarn and extras like shells, rocks and jewels, the group made a variety of containers and reported that they are using them as pencil boxes and flower holders. Another cool project consisted of pillar candles, fabric paints and the same extras. The club members created some colorful jazzed up candles that they plan to use as gifts this holiday season. Portfolio preparation is in high gear with extra workshops being held at our leader s home. Getting these done this first year of our club will sure make it easier next year!

134 6 Led by Christian Senda and Cindy Cardenas, twenty students from Carson City joined thousands of other youth around the country Wednesday, October 7, to conduct an experiment in biofuels. Senda and Cardenas are veterans of last year s National Science Experiment Day which studied the effect of hydrogels. With University of Nevada Cooperative Extension staff, Jim Barcellos and Leticia Servin, the students demonstrated the Biofuels Blast experiment using sugar, syrup, warm water and yeast. The demonstration took place in the Carson City / Storey County Cooperative Extension classroom. That same afternoon, Sandy Wallin conducted the Biofuels experiment in Lockwood at Hillside Elementary with the afterschool program there. We had great success with sugar, of course, Karo syrup came in a close second. I left five students with four bottles, the remaining two with dried crushed native locust leaves and dried chopped cheat grass. I heard the weekend after the experiment that both the dried locust leaves and the cheat grass bottles created enough gas to blow up the balloons by the following day. The kids were all elated and said it felt like a real experiment. Who knew cheatgrass would be good for anything? On October 8, the Biofuels Blast experiment was conducted at Hugh Gallagher Elementary in Virginia City with participants from the afterschool program. 4-Hers Ryan Lucky (left), Rylan Fancher (center, leaning on sign), Bryce Bauer (right) and Bryar Fancher (kneeling right) joined the 4-H Afterschool Science group at the National Science Experiment.

143 15 Carson City / Storey County 4-H Council 2621 Northgate Lane, Suite 15 Carson City, NV storey/ 4-H Carson City / Storey County Council Meeting Minutes, October 12, :30 p.m. In attendance: Deb Cook, Heather Fancher, Joylyn Harmer, Sandy Hawkins, Rich Knight, Geoff Landry, Dee Dee Monroe, Susan and Steve Rogers, Kimberly Russell, Judy Smith, Linda Thompson, and Sandy Wallin. The minutes of the last meeting were read and approved. The treasures report is as follows: beginning balance as of was $7, The various expenses during September were $1, (including those for Pumpkin Patch) while revenues were $428.00, leaving an ending balance of $6, Kimberly Russell requested financial assistance to attend the Western National 4-H Roundup in Denver, January 6-10, The council discussed that Nevada had not had representation there for many years. The council awarded Kimberly $ and congratulated her for earning her invitation to attend. Recap of the Pumpkin Patch/Craft Fair: Per Geoff s calculations, attendance was down around 18% from last year. The craft vendors did not do well at all. The gross amount made was $2, and after all expenses were tallied, the net should be about two scholarships ($1,000). There was much discussion at the meeting about continuing to have a pumpkin patch next year. The community is getting overrun with competing pumpkin patches, with more cropping up each fall. We discussed perhaps combining 4-H Week with some of the activities that were available at the Pumpkin Patch to generate interest for 4-H clubs and activities in the community. We also discussed that maybe we need to change our fund raising strategy to go after dollars instead of nickels. Going after corporate funding would be one way of doing that. Heather asked the council if they would be interested in participating the Seeliger PTO sponsored Parent University to be held at the high school on November 14. Sandy W. explained that Jim Barcellos has a booth there and the council asked if clubs could send representation to assist Jim. For more information, contact Jim or Heather. The council received another $ installment for Mr. and Mrs. Sides toward our scholarship fund. We are trying to arrange a time to meet with Preston Sides again before Christmas. He asked that each club put together a wish list for what their club could use, want or dream of getting if they had the funding to achieve it. Please forward that information to Jim who will get it to the committee. Sandy H. and Heather asked the council to think about supporting a 4-H member lock-in for our members. The kids would be locked in at a location over night and watch movies, play games, eat and have fun. A location to have this was not decided at this meeting and more details will need to be worked out. We are waiting for a confirmation from Park & Rec. for the dates of February 5-7, 2010 for our annual fabric and rummage sale at Fuji Park. Nomination of officers for 2009/2010 was a follows: President Heather Fancher Vice-President Sandy Hawkins Treasurer Deb Cook Secretary Judy Smith The elections will be held at the next meeting so we urge all members and parents to attend and participate in choosing your council.

146 Nearly 6,000 infants, children and teens are in protective custody in the state of Nevada. 49% of these kids live in Washoe County and in Nevada's rural counties. They have survived indescribable circumstances and experiences. New clothing is an incredible gift to a child who has never had a thing to call his own. The Reno Rodeo Denim Drive is an annual community event to collect new denim clothing, socks and underwear for abused and neglected infants, children and teens who have been rescued from unsafe homes. NEW! The Reno Rodeo Denim Drive is expanding to Carson City, Churchill, Douglas, Humboldt, Lyon, Pershing and Storey County. Donations will be tracked by county, so every donation (cash or clothing) will directly benefit the children in protective custody in each community. Our goal is to collect enough clothing to provide at least one pair of jeans, one package of socks and one package of underwear to every infant, child and teen in protective custody and foster care. Clothing collected during our annual drive is distributed throughout the year by the Washoe County Department of Social Services and the State Department of Child and Family Services.
