1 4-H Friday Update October 11, 2013 WSU Grant-Adams Area Extension Hello Everyone, Friday Update Archives Grant-Adams Area 4-H Calendar 4-H Publications & Projects Catalog Interactive Records & Forms Youth Livestock Producers 4-H Volunteer Hours Database E-Learning for 4-H Volunteers Frequently Requested Forms, Publications & Information A sincere thank you to each of the returning leaders that came to the leader s training meeting this week. You each touch the lives of many. Thank you. Christy is submitting a review of her thoughts plus the questions that were discussed. Please respond to the questions as she has directed. For those of you how could not attend one of the above evenings, we are going to have a LAST CALL Leader s meeting October 29 th at the Extension Office beginning at 5:30 PM. You MUST attend in order to pick up your enrollment packets. If special arrangements need to be made for individual training (allow 90 minutes) call the Extension office (M-TH) to make an appointment. If at all possible, please make the October 29 th meeting as is will be big time saver for the office. Thank you for respecting our time. Is anyone interested in ceramics or porcelain?? Pouring molds, painting, or just having fun?? We are looking for a group of adult or teen leaders that would like to learn and are willing to work with kids so they can learn how to pour molds and enjoy the art of ceramics and porcelain. Christmas ornament molds will be our first lesson. Please contact the Extension Office this week if you are interested. I would like to work with the group to pick a date that will work for them and the instructor. Have a great week, Diane Correction to last week's Friday Update: Amelia Howe placed 4 th in Figure 8 Western Games at State Fair. Congratulations! Equine Members and Leaders Please note that PNW574, 4-H Horse Contest Guide, has been replaced by the Pacific Northwest 4-H Horse Contest Guide (This 2012 contest guide is in effect through September 2015)

2 Reflections and Program Planning Greetings! For those of you whom I have not met, I am Christine Price, County Director and Family and Consumer Science Educator for our Grant-Adams Area Extension programming. Over the past few months I have been engaged in conversations with parents, 4-H volunteers and various other community members. Each of these conversations has circled around the topic of how we can do better with our 4-H Youth Development program. (just to reassure you there are no major problems or issues this is just a normal program planning exercise). As WSU has worked through the budget challenges of the past few years, there was a new staffing plan proposed for our 4-H Youth Development staff. The basic principal is that instead of one 4-H faculty in each county we will have faculty located strategically across the state. Each of these positions will oversee 2-4 program coordinators. The faculty positions will still have the ultimate responsibility for our youth program. They will also provide supervision, training and direction for the program coordinators. Grant County will retain their Youth Development faculty position and we have been able to add the program coordinator position. The Grant County Commissioners are supporting this position. Jeannie Kiehn will be serving in this role. We are fortunate to have someone with Jeannie s knowledge, skills and experience in this position. Opportunities often come without the ability for much planning..such was the case with this opportunity. So, this is still a little bit of a work in progress, but generally speaking, Jeannie will be the go to person for most events and activities. Diane will be working on some bigger picture pieces seeking program funding, writing up program activities and results, etc. Jeannie will also provide leadership to our Master Gardener volunteers. Many of the organizational requirements are the same for both volunteer groups. In an effort to provide some direction and foundation to the programming for the coming 4-H program year I posed the following questions to our volunteers who attended the 4-H Leader Council meeting and Re-Enrollment meetings this past week. Please take a few minutes to review these questions, share with other leaders, parents and youth in your club, and then send your responses back to Jeannie, You have until Nov. 8 th to return comments. Here are the questions: 1. What is important to our Grant-Adams Area 4-H Volunteers? What do we value in our 4-H Programs? (This question really addresses the issue of why we volunteer to share knowledge with youth, support our communities, continue traditions we enjoyed as youth.what else?) 2. What 4-H program Activities do we value as learning experiences for our youth? (some have already said Super Saturday, KYG, Teen Rally, Quiz Bowls, Judging Contests, Sarah Smith/beef bucks end of year program, and Horse-training and schooling shows.what else?) 3. How can we best showcase our WSU 4-H programs to county commissioners, local businesses, our neighbors and other supporters? (A couple suggestions so far get on the county commissioners regular agenda and have our youth share how 4-H has been important to them; let the ifiber ONE News system know about 4-H events-this communication channel is getting more popular for people to watch) 4. There were rumblings during the Grant County Fair that 4-H was going to be moved out of their exhibit space.i have reason to believe that 4-H will not be moved out, but we may be asked to share the space with another department. So the question is, How can we best utilize our exhibit building space to showcase the 4-H still life exhibits and other project activities? And, if we have to share, with whom would we choose? (Master Gardeners has been one suggestion) 5. And the final thought If we needed to what current activity could be dropped.or temporarily put on hold? (one suggestion was Camp at Sun Lakes/Banks Lake or any other Grant Co. Location) Again, We, the leadership team for our Grant-Adams Area 4-H Youth Development program, are seeking your input on these questions.and anything else you may want to share with us. Comments on these items will be accepted until Nov. 8 th. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank You for your time and service to our 4-H program.

3 Put the Child First. WSU Extension is remains committed in its efforts to prevent the abuse and exploitation of children and vulnerable adults. In our continuing efforts to assure a safe environment for all program participants, Washington State University Extension is requiring child protection training for all faculty, staff and volunteers working with youth and vulnerable adults. Volunteers and Leaders are required to complete an online 20 minute presentation called Put the Child First. This training is mandatory. To register for Put the Child First go to: Fill in the information requested and press Submit Request. You will receive an automatic with log-in information to view the presentation. Your registration for the training will be kept in the system as proof of your participation. Website: See the Example of the registration screen below. In the "County" dropdown box select Grant; In the Volunteer Program dropdown box select 4-H.

4 All WSU Extension Volunteers must log on to each month to report hours they worked for any WSU Extension program. The Volunteer Hours Reporting System is a system for recording the data that the Washington State Department of Labor and Industries requires for WSU to ensure volunteers are indeed working on behalf of the university. Additionally, volunteer hours are a powerful reporting tool for WSU Extension to demonstrate the broad-based support for our programming by citizens across Washington State. Why Do Volunteers Need to Report Hours in This System? We at WSU Extension could not have an educational impact in local communities without the work done by volunteers. For this we thank you very much! So why do we ask you to do even more for us and report the details of your work? Well, both WSU and the State of Washington look after the well-being of volunteers by requiring workers compensation insurance for every volunteer. This pays for medical treatment in the event that you are injured while working as a volunteer. Washington State law requires that all volunteers working in support of WSU programs are covered by worker compensation insurance. The Washington State Department of Labor and Industry uses the dates and number of hours that volunteers work to determine the amount of insurance that must be purchased to adequately cover our volunteers. To be in compliance with State Law, WSU Extension has developed an online tool to facilitate collection and analysis of volunteer contributions. Discover the 4-H Mall The 4-H Mall - your source for official 4-H supplies & apparel - has just released the H Catalog, which is easier to use, features actual 4-H'ers, and showcases many new products! As a registered 4-H volunteer or family member, we're offering you an exclusive discount. Visit and enter code ACCESS at checkout to receive 15% off your order* of $50 or more!
