2 CYC Notes Hello 4-H friends, families, and guests! I am happy to be back in Iowa and am excited to share my experiences from the National 4-H Healthy Living Summit in Chevy Chase, Maryland. Did you know that healthy living includes nutrition education, physical fitness, wellness, and emotional wellbeing? If you would like to know more about how you can get involved with healthy living come chat with me! As we progress further into the 4-H year busy times are coming quickly! Make sure to take time to read the newsletter, like our Facebook page, or visit our website for all upcoming events and Wayne County 4-H information. I am excited to watch the Wayne County 4-H Program grow with new members and new clubs. If there is an event or workshop you would like to see happen, please reach out! 5 Animal Science Roundup June 26-28, 2018 Iowa State University Campus All youth in 8th-12th grades are invited to apply to attend this three day conference all about animal science. Species that you may choose from: Beef, Swine, Sheep, Horse, Poultry, Meat Goat. Hands on learning from the top scientists in the country. Activities include: Dissection, ration formulation, meats, reproduction, selection, careers, competitions and more. For more information and to apply go to: All applications are due March 15 and participants will be notified by April 1. Iowa 4-H Youth Conference Every June, almost 900 teenagers converge on the campus of Iowa State University for 3 days full of speakers, workshops, mixers, dances, a banquet, and community service activities. If you've completed 8th grade, you're eligible to attend. You don't even have to be in 4-H to attend this conference! Regular registration for a fee of $180 closes on June 1 with late registration for $200 available until June 11. Click here for the financial aid application, due April 25 to the Iowa 4-H Foundation. 6 2018 Options for Quality Assurance Certification Quality Assurance Certification is required to exhibit livestock at the Wayne County Fair & Iowa State Fair for youth grades 4-12 exhibiting in the following departments: Beef, Sheep, Swine, Poultry, Rabbit, Dairy Cattle, Meat Goat, Dairy Goat Option #1: FSQA Training Grades 4-12 Format: Face-to-face training with hands -on activities offered across Iowa Cost: Free Certification Good for 1 Year Wayne County Event: Saturday, March 10 from 10 AM-12 PM at Wayne County Fairgrounds, Corydon R.S.V.P Required to Attend: Tuesday, March 6th For a list of events statewide: Option #2: Online Training Youth for the Quality Care of Animals (YQCA) Grades 4-12 Format: Interactive, self-guided online training (approximately hours) Cost: $12 per 4-H Youth Certification Good for 1 Year Training available now at Log in using your Iowa 4-H Online credentials. Your participation is automatically recorded in 4-H Online Shooting Sports Youth Camp June 8-11, 2018: Picture Rocks Camp in Monticello, IA Explore the Safety and Education in Shooting Sports (SESS) program by trying new skills, meeting new friends and making connections with County Shooting Sports Clubs. 7 Save the Date: CAMP WILD June 11-13, 2018 Take a ride on the "WILD side and mark your calendars to attend Camp Wild, June 11-13, 2018 at Camp Clover Woods near Madrid, Iowa. Camp Wild is offered for youth completing grades 5, 6, and 7 in Spring Experience adventure and excitement during three days filled with 4-H camp traditions and favorite activities, including nature hikes, challenge course, creek walk, rock wall, archery, swimming, camp songs, crafts, and campfires. Bring a friend with you, and make new ones while you are there too! Camp will run from Monday, June 11 at 11 a.m. until our closing ceremony, starting at 3:15 p.m. on Wednesday, June 13. Registration Deadline will be May 15, Register before May 1, 2018 to secure your spot, and receive our $200 registration early bird price. Registration costs $220 after May 1 and before May 15. No registrations will be accepted after May 15, Click here to register today! Make sure to check with your County Extension Office, as many have financial assistance for 4-H members attending camp! 8 4-H Summer Program Assistant Position Opening Wayne County Extension is going to be hiring a summer program assistant for day camps and county fair help. The job description and ad will be posted on our extension web page on March 19, If interested please check for complete details. Goat and Sheep Weigh-In Sunday, May 6th at the Wayne County Fairgrounds from 8:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. All Iowa State Fair and/or Ak-Sar-Ben meat goats and sheep the State Fair identification process will include the animal s weight, retinal image scan and ear tag numbers (official tattoo for does). The County Youth Coordinator will be entering this information following weigh-in. The cost for a retinal scan is $5.00 per animal.
