Fair Entries Any items that were not picked up from the 2017 Carroll County 4-H/FFA Fair must be picked up by Friday, September 8 th. Items can be found in the back hallway of the Extension Office. Any items remaining after September 8 th will be discarded. 1
2 Welcome Natalie Gahm! We would like to welcome Natalie Gahm as the newest member of the 4-H Team. Natalie started July 24 th and will be taking on programming responsibilities with Residential Camps, Environmental and STEM programs. Next time you are in the office stop by and introduce yourself. Here is a little more information about Natalie: A native of Woodbine, MD, Natalie Gahm received her B.A. in Communications from Hood College in However, in the years that followed, she discovered that she possessed a passion for the wonderful and wild world of insects, and she ultimately earned her B.S. and M.S. in Entomology from Oklahoma State University in 2015 and 2017, respectively. Natalie is thrilled to be back in her beautiful home state and able to give back to Carroll County as an Agent Associate in 4-H Development with the University of Maryland Extension! Paint Nite with CC 4-H Make plans now to join us on Friday, November 3 rd at 7pm at the Extension Office for our first Paint Nite Fundraiser! We will be painting a Cover Bridge scene. No experience is necessary to come out and paint. The cost to attend is $35 (all materials are provided) and light refreshments will be provided. To register to attend following this link: UME Volunteer Training Would you like to be a University of Maryland Extension Volunteer? Are you helping out at club meetings with projects or activities? Do you have parents in your club who have expressed an interest in being a 4-H volunteer? All adults who are working within our program should go through this training. The next UME training will take place on Thursday, September 7 th at 6pm. Registration is required so please call the Extension Office at if you are interested in the next training. Volunteer Council Meeting The next Carroll County 4-H Volunteer Council Meeting will be held on Monday, September 25 th at 6:30pm at the Extension Office. We would love to see you attend! You will receive updates on the county program, and this is your chance to ask questions, share concerns, and provide feedback to us! Everyone is welcome to attend, including senior 4-H members! If you are a Carroll County 4-H All-Star, be sure to stay for the All-Star meeting immediately following! Scholarships Don t forget that a book filled with a variety of scholarships is available to view at the Extension Office! Make sure to stop in and take a look at these great opportunities. Some new opportunities were just added in late May! 2
3 Project Record Workshops There s no school, so why not come out and join us on September 21 st and 22 nd and October 20 th to work on your project records at the Extension Office from 9am-3pm? We will be available during that time to answer questions and help you work on completing your project records. This is a great opportunity to come out and knock out all of your records in one day! Please note that you can drop in at any time during those days and leave when your records and questions have been answered. If you plan on attending, please RSVP to the Extension Office at by September 19 th for the September workshops and by October 18 th for the October workshop. Project Records Due Project records will be due to the Extension Office on Monday, November 27 th. Please check with your club leader to see when your records are due to them. If you participated in the following areas (ALL MARKET ANIMALS, Rabbit, Poultry, Horse, Photography, Garden, Plants and Flowers) at the 2017 fair, you MUST turn in completed project records to be eligible for the 2018 CC 4-H/FFA Fair. See the attached Tips for Project Records for 2017 for additional information. Please follow this link to Carroll County s Extension website for the correct project record forms: Teen Council Meetings Are you interested in expanding your leadership and service experience? Then the Carroll County 4-H Teen Council might just be for you! If you are 12 years of age or older and have an interest in learning more about this club, please call the Extension Office at to sign up! The Carroll County 4-H Teen Council is holding another Google Hangout online meeting on Sunday, September 10 th from 7:30pm-8:30pm! All 4-H teens are invited to attend this virtual meeting from the comfort of their own home. Connect to learn more about what Teen Council has planned for the remainder of this year, as well as a recap of the recent trip to Baltimore! WHAT: Carroll County 4-H Teen Council Online Meeting WHEN: Sunday, September 10 th, 2017 TIME: 7:30pm-8:30pm LOCATION: Online via Google Hangout WHO: All 4-H teens (age 12-18) are welcome to attend RSVP to let us know you are joining at Once you RSVP, we will send you the link to join the Google Hangout. 4 Maryland 4-H Volunteer Forum Make plans to attend the MD 4-H Volunteers Association Forum on Friday, November 17 th through Sunday, November 19 th. This weekend event is designed to unite volunteers and teens from around Maryland for engaging training and networking opportunities. Whether you come for a day or stay for the weekend, we hope you come to Learn by Doing in order to help the Maryland 4-H Program Make the Best Better! The whole family is welcome to come and learning tracks are provided for youth ages 5-11 in the Clover, Junior, and Intermediate tracks which will easily allow parents to attend the training tracks that span the breadth of 4-H programming from Agriculture and Camp to Clubs and S.T.E.M. activities. There is something for everyone! More information will be available soon. National 4-H Conference If you are a senior 4-H member and would like to possibly be awarded a National Trip, then it s time to start thinking about your Senior Portfolio! Senior Portfolios for National 4-H Conference are due to the Extension Office by Monday, October 2 nd. Just update your portfolio and get it submitted! If you have questions, contact Becky at or bridgewa@umd.edu. Senior Portfolio Workshop The Senior Portfolio Workshop will be held at the Extension Office on Saturday, November 4 th from 9am-2pm. You will have the opportunity to build your 4-H resume. The afternoon session will help you with interviewing skills through mock interviews and give tips on how to dress. All seniors and last year intermediates are welcome to attend. Don t miss out on this opportunity! This is a great time to work on your interview skills for any opportunity. RSVP to the Extension Office by Wednesday, November 2 nd. Please plan on bringing a laptop if available; if not, please let us know. If you have questions, contact Becky at or bridgewa@umd.edu. 4-H Promotional Contest Show off your GREEN while promoting 4-H during National 4-H Week October 1 st through October 8 th happening in various locations. Plan to put your club s activities on display in your favorite window, library, or school! Make sure to call the Extension Office by Friday, September 29 th to let us know where your display is for the promotional contest! If you need promotional flyers, please contact the office. The judging criteria is attached to this issue of the Tribune. Clover Halloween Party Save the date! The Carroll County 4-H Ambassador Team will be hosting the annual 4-H Clover Halloween Party on Saturday, October 21 st from 6pm-8pm at the Extension Office. The program will be open to all 4-H Clovers and will feature games, music, and lots of seasonal treats. Registration is required. More information will be featured in the October Tribune. 4
5 Blah s Beat the Midwinter Blah s will be held on January 27 th, 2018 at the Carroll County Extension Office and Ag Center. Please mark the date on your calendar now and plan on joining us for this informative and fun day! Attached to this issue of the Tribune is a form requesting classes for the Blah s. If you are interested in teaching, please be sure to fill out the form and return it to the Extension Office by November 3 rd. If you want to teach, but don t know what to do, let us know we have lots of ideas! Carroll County 4-H All Stars Attention all Carroll County 4-H All-Stars! Our next meeting will be held on Monday, September 25 th immediately after the Volunteer Council meeting which starts at 6:30pm. At this meeting, we will be forming our nominating committee for new officers and would love to have you serve! We certainly hope to see each of you there! Volunteer Survey The Maryland 4-H Program could not reach the thousands of youth in Maryland or offer the highquality programs it does without the time, energy, and support of each UME 4-H Volunteer. For this, WE THANK YOU!!! To help strengthen and grow the Maryland 4-H Volunteer system, the Maryland 4-H Office and Volunteer Systems and Development Specialist, Jamie Morris, asks that you contribute your thoughts to a volunteer survey designed to identify the needs, wants, and concerns of you and your fellow volunteers. The survey can be located at Diamond Clover Level 6 If you plan on working on your Level 6 project, it is time for you to reach out to the Extension Office and create a team including your club leader, a 4-H Educator and a 4-H All-Star. Start making your plans now for your project! Club Treasurer Books and 990 Postcards Remember to close out all club treasurer books on June 30, Your books should include all information from July 1, 2016 June 30, If you have questions, please call the Extension Office. Club treasurer books and Annual Financial Summary forms are due to the Extension Office by Monday, October 16 th. IRS 990 ELECTRONIC POSTCARDS MUST BE SUBMITTED TO THE IRS BY WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 15 TH! Send a copy of your submitted postcard to Becky at bridgewa@umd.edu. 5
6 Club Leader Updates The Fall Club Leaders Meeting has been scheduled for MONDAY, OCTOBER 30 TH AT 7PM. This is an important meeting to attend, as we plan to go over important information and updates from the state 4-H office that may affect your clubs. All club leaders should make plans to be there. Newspaper Articles When sending in an article/picture to the newspaper, please send it to Becky and we will get it on the Extension Website. Ag Center Building Use When reserving a building with the Ag Center, please follow these steps. 1. Call a 4-H Educator. 2. Give a reason you need the building. If we can accommodate you at the Extension Office, that will be our first option. 3. If an Ag Center facility is still needed, the 4-H Educator will make the reservation for your club. Club News Take a minute to check out what is happening around Carroll County with the latest news from 4-H Clubs! Be sure to submit your club s articles. Articles are found at CC 4-H/FFA Fair Everyone is welcome to participate in Fair Board meetings held at the Extension Office. The next meeting dates are September 6 th and September 27 th, Too many ribbons or trophies? Don t throw them away! Bring them to the Extension Office or to a Fair Board meeting so they can be recycled for next year! So don t throw them out let s recycle! Indoor Building News A BIG THANK YOU to everyone who helped with the Fair Set-Up and Clean-Up in the Red Building! Lots of hands make the work lighter for everyone! By dividing the alphabet for Set-Up and Clean-Up, it gave us great help and allowed us to finish earlier on both days. Also, by using less shelving, less tables and wooden shelves, it made the work more manageable for 4-Hers. If anyone finds that they have accidentally picked up items that do not belong to them, please return them to the Extension Office so we can get them to the members whom they belong. If you received a Grand Champion or special award from a department in the Red Building, please send a thank you note to the award donor. If you need the name and address of the donor of the trophy or award you received, please contact Ms. Sandy Stonesifer at Clothing Exhibitors Please send a thank you to Avenue Tailors and Cleaners at 19 Pennsylvania Avenue, Westminster, MD for the garment bags they donated to cover the entries on display. It s very easy to criticize and complain about things we don t like. As a superintendent, it is nice to get a thank you. Please send a note to the superintendent of the departments you entered to thank them for their hard work and dedication to your project area. Maryland artist, Vivian Davis will lead you stepby-step to recreate an original acrylic painting to take home and hang on your wall! 10 Promotional Display Contest SUPERINTENDENT: Wanda Rawlings 410/ Entry Procedure Club s registration for Promotional Display Contest to be called to the Carroll County Extension Office (4-H) check Tribune for due date Contest National 4-H Club Week October 1-7, 2017 RULES AND REGULATIONS Promotional Display Contest 1. Each club may enter only one class window display, bulletin board display, or table-top display. 2. Clubs may display booths or banners entered at the Carroll Co. 4H & FFA Fair as their entry in the Promotional Display Contest. 3. Club representative, when registering their entry, will also advise of location of their display. If display is within a building, also include times building is open so that display can be judged H members are responsible for setting up the display. Parents and volunteers may assist but not assume total responsibility for setting up the display. 5. All displays must include the Affirmative Action statement (4-H Is Open to All) or the display will not be considered for premiums. The Affirmative Action statement is available at the 4-H Office. 6. Displays must be in place no later than Monday, October 3, and remain in place until Monday October Displays will be judged on the following basis: a. Effective Title (short, personal, an action verb) 10 points; b. Promotes 4-H (how to get involved) 30 points; c. Attracts Attention (has stopping power) 10 points; d. Holds Interest (encourages study) 10 points: e. General Appearance (simple, has balance, use of color) 10 points; f. Workmanship (neat, well-constructed) 10 points; g. Effective Location (area of maximum visibility for youth and parents) 10 points h. Total possible points There will be one Champion and one Reserve Champion for each category. An overall Grand Champion may be selected from Champion Window Display, Champion Bulletin Board Display, and Champion Tabletop Display. 9.
