No ordinary guide, David Williams helps you to discover both history and nature as you explore the many wonderful neighborhoods of our city. NOTE: This club meeting will be a joint meeting with the Rotary Club of University District. 05/17/2018: Social at Pono Ranch and Syttende Mai Parade! Rather than meet on Tuesday for a social, the club will be celebrating Syttende Mai on Thursday, May 17th! Join your fellow Rotarians in celebrating Ballard's Nordic heritage at 5:00 pm for happy hour at Pono Ranch under the Ballard Bridge, 4502 Shilshole Ave NW. Afterwards, we'll walk over to Ballard Avenue to view the end of the parade. The parade itself starts at 6:00 pm. The parade route begins at 24th Ave NW and NW 62nd and winds its way ultimately to Ballard Ave, ending at Lone St. For the full parade map, see If we're lucky, we might catch Doug Warne in his fancy parade convertible! ;) 05/22/2018: Eric Nelson and the Nordic Museum; Students of the Month Eric Nelson of the Nordic Museum will be updating us on the features of the new museum. The May Students of the Month will also be honored. 05/29/2018: Bye, no meeting This date is the 5th Tuesday of the month, consequently, there is no meeting. Not to mention it follows a holiday weekend, so relax and enjoy a long holiday if you can! Club Business/Announcements Club Meeting on April 24th President Chris Davis opened the meeting at 12 noon. Pledge of Allegiance: Daniel Foe Thought of the Day and the 4-Way Test: Britt Olson s Thought of the Day was from an ee cummings poem appropriate for the glorious spring day. Visiting Rotarian: Visiting Rotarian and incoming Assistant Governor Howard Cohen introduced his guest Curtis, who explained a bit about his education non-profit, which places summer interns with local workplaces. ANNOUNCEMENTS Volunteering at the Nordic Museum Rotarian volunteers will help with the museum grand opening May 5-6, and for special events throughout the year. Be watching for the many volunteer opportunities at the museum throughout each month. Joint club lunch meeting The May 8th lunch meeting will be a joint meeting with University District Rotarians per tradition, they can t use their regular meeting place, the Seattle Yacht Club, the week of Opening Day. Program ideas? Incoming Program Chair Kathleen Davis provided cards at each table for notes on program preferences and speaker contacts. Contact Kathleen with your ideas for programs in the Rotary Year. Food Bank Volunteers Needed & Car Wash Coupons Available

2 Food Bank Volunteers Needed & Car Wash Coupons Available Bev circulated a sign-up sheet for Foodbank Monday volunteers. Contact Bev if you missed signing up. She also has Brown Bear car wash coupons great for gifts, and a great club fundraiser. Scholarships Update Scholarships this year will go to four BHS students two recognized for outstanding community service and two for academic excellence. Scholars will be selected by BHS and will be honored before graduation. Two additional scholarships will go the students at Seattle Central College s Maritime Academy to be selected by faculty. Recipients will also be honored at a lunch meeting. Great spots to visit in Seattle President Chris challenged members for ideas on where to take a couple visitors around our area. Suggestions included hikes, The Great Wheel, the Space Needle, The Gates Foundation and the zoo. Raffle: There were two lucky raffle winners, Britt Olson and AG-Elect Howard Cohen. Each walked away with some home-made cinnamon rolls and a bag of fresh ground coffee. Britt chose the Nordic Spirit coffee, which supports the Nordic Museum Foundation, while Mr Cohen chose the Fisherman's Blend coffee, which supports the Seattle Fishermen's Memorial. You can buy both blends of coffee yourself at Cafe Appassionato near Fishermen's Terminal! April Students of the Month President Chris then turned the meeting over to Principal Keven Wynkoop for introductions of Students of the Month. Principal Wynkoop said these students had a special emphasis on service.

3 Keven had high praise for Children s Hospital where student Sofia Albert is a volunteer. Sofia loves her work at Children s and is headed to Gonzaga U, where she will pursue a degree in physiology and a career in physical therapy. She also does ballet five days a week. Student Ryan Zeffer volunteers behind the scenes at basketball games, operating the scoreboard and on weekends at Snoqualmie teaching physically challenged skiers through Outdoors for All. Ryan is headed for UW next year, where he has a chemistry internship. Club Program: Eric Muhs and Community Radio KBFG 107.3

4 Principal Wynkoop moved on to introduce speaker Eric Muhs (Mr. Moose ) a great teacher of business, who uses a hands-on approach to tools and technology. Eric came to talk about the low-power FM community radio station KBFG Eric s wife was a Rotary Scholar. For her, being a Rotary Scholar was a transformative experience. She wanted to join his presentation at Ballard, but she is now a professor at Seattle U, and had a presentation of her own to do. The BFG in KBFG stands for Ballard, Fremont, Greenwood, and founders had to acquire the rights to those call letters from a station in the mid-west. KBFG is a brand new 501(c) 3, all-volunteer non-commercial station with room for Rotary programs. Its 10-watt power reaches an audience of 100K. It also streams on the internet. The antenna is located atop the Norse Home on Phinney Ridge. Some of their most successful programming has been live basketball, announced by our very own Billy Rodgers. Eric feels radio is a fabulous medium for developing student voice, covering local events, and connecting with local music. KBFG now has a studio, a 6 x8 facility near Swedish and Mighty O. They d like to see a studio in every school (Salmon Bay, Hamilton, Whitman, Ballard, Lincoln) and are looking for underwriters, grant writers, real estate professionals, internet and computing experts, gear, etc. Kathleen Linscott recommended checking out the KBFG website ( for more about the local events (like Spilled Ink at the Ballard Library) and locally produced music. Thanks to the club members who volunteered for club service at the meeting: Thought of the Day: Britt Olson Scribe: Marilee Fuller Ticket seller: Bev Washburn Greeter: Kathleen Linscott Cashier: James Raptis Raffle: Kathleen Linscott

From left, guest Rotarian Bobbi Miles, Steve Stansfield, Ed Robinson, and Chris Davis. Great work!! Tiny House Action! Before we build our own tiny house this summer, we are invited and encouraged to hone our tiny house building skills by volunteering for the following: Rotary Volunteers are needed to paint tiny houses on May 12th at Whittier Heights Women s Tiny House Encampment. Address: th NW, Seattle. Time: 9 AM until finished. This is a tiny house encampment specifically built by women and for women who are homeless. Tiny House Painting Work Party on Saturday, May 26th from 9 AM until finished. Address: 1714 E. Yesler Way (corner of 18th and Yesler). This

7 work party is of particular interest, because a photographer from Rotary International will be at the site to photograph Rotarians in Action. RI is specifically interested in tiny houses and what our district and clubs are doing. Birthdays and Anniversaries Congratulations to our members with a birthday in May! - Kathleen Linscott - John Deasy - Ed Robinson Congratulations to our members with their club anniversary in May. We are so happy you are a part of our club! - Pete Scott (30 years) - Paul Sivesind (8 years)
