They were even able to use straws of different sizes and see if the leaf went the same distance using a smaller straw. A huge thanks to McDonald s for donating the straws! 4

5 BRILLION MIDDLE SCHOOL Seventh Grade Trip to Camp U-Nah-Li-Yah A breath of luscious clean air cleared the lungs of all. The gorgeous pines towered high above the campsite, and the excited noises of tweens walking into their cabins filled the campsite as us seventh graders got to Camp U-Nah-Li-Yah in northern Wisconsin for a three day, 2 night visit. I was nervous about walking in, Canyon Fox, a seventh grader, claimed. It s a lot different than I thought, He stated that his expectations were low, but he had a lot of fun! Some activities he liked were Capture the Flag and canoeing. The place was big, exclaimed Rachel Pope, an excited member of the camp. I liked the climbing wall. I made it to the top twice! One thing that she will remember for a long time is canoeing with all of her classmates and friends. She was also glad she didn t have to kiss the moose! After every meal we had amazing entertainment performed by the Gizmo winners. Predator and Prey was a pretty interesting game, with classmates running in fright to get away from the predators chasing them. We all regret getting on that bus to go back, but it sure was an amazing, once in a lifetime experience for everyone. 6 BRILLION SCHOOL DISTRICT Pumpkin Decorating Contest Sixth Grade held their second annual pumpkin decorating contest this week. All entries had to exemplify an aspect of a book each student was reading. So, contestants could choose to focus on bringing a character to life, portraying a scene from the book, replicating the cover, or explaining the theme of the story. With each entry, students gave a booktalk on their book, and explained how the pumpkin was designed and decorated. The pumpkins were put on display, and then fifth through eighth grade students were invited to vote. Winners were: Alex Castillejos (Pax), Kaitlin Tisler (Flipped), and Alana Doege and Madelynn Breit (Rain, Reign). Voted most artistic, and receiving the most votes overall, was Jaden Bastian (The Tiger Rising). Voted most creative was Tiffany Zinkel (Miss Peregrine s Home For Peculiar Children). And, the honorable mention pumpkins were made by Laci Sabel (Pax), Sophia Galoff (Prisoners of War), Brianna Rieth (Moo). 6

11 BRILLION MIDDLE SCHOOL The Pumpkins are Calling! As temperatures sink, leaves loose their grip, and the wind becomes brisk, it can only mean one thing. Halloween is on its way, and pumpkins are about to be carved. The kindergarteners have picked the cream of the pumpkin crop for this years grinning jacko-lanterns. Seventh graders buddied up to help bring their partners plans to life by carving up unique and wonderful creations. When the orange dust settled and the guts and seeds were cleaned up, the kindergarteners and their buddies shared some of the season s magic by reading some festive books. All had a spooky good time during this year s activities. Thank you kindergarteners for allowing the seventh graders to be part of your fun-filled day! 11

12 BRILLION MIDDLE SCHOOL Citizen Scientists In science this year, 8th graders have joined ranks as Citizen Scientists with the Water Action Volunteers to study the health of our local Spring Creek. 8th graders will visit the creek about once a month to conduct various water samples and then report the data back to the state. This data will be used to help monitor the water conditions at the creek and perhaps help develop a plan to improve our local creek! BRILLION HIGH SCHOOL FBLA Fall Leadership Lab On October 17, five FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America) members attended the Fall Leadership Lab in Appleton, Wisconsin. There, they connected with other FBLA members and grew their leadership skills by attending breakout sessions and listening to the keynote speaker. 13 BRILLION HIGH SCHOOL FACS Success! (Family and Consumer Sciences) By Amy Graminske, FACS Teacher, Brillion High School Greetings from the FACS department! I am excited to begin my third year at Brillion after taking over for Judy Christianson, who retired after 42 years. With Judy s support, I am carrying on what she began by teaching fundamental life skills to our young people. While in college, I learned the importance of identifying perennial problems that lead us to the objectives and purposes of what, and why we teach. Today s families are very busy and many life skills are not the primary focus in the home. Some students come in, literally not knowing the difference between a potato peeler and a beater attachment, and most have no idea how to sew a button on a shirt. What about the more important skills such as the fundamental knowledge and skills for life relationships or raising a child? These are the things we focus on in FACS, along with 21st century skills, because these skills affect our careers, family life, health and relationships. One of our success stories is Brooke Quinzer. Brooke has taken 5 FACS classes over the last two years. As a junior, Brooke took textiles and was required to construct a hot pad to demonstrate her sewing machine skills. After sewing the inner pattern, she had to tuck the edges under and sew the thicker material around the edge to finish off the project. If I remember correctly, she broke 8 sewing machine needles and finally gave up, turning it in with the pins still intact for whatever reduced grade she could get. Yet, she worked through it, never truly gave up and, in the end, finished the class successfully. Brooke returned in her senior year for Clothing class where she designed and constructed several dresses for her daughter, pj pants for her brother, a hot pad gift set, and a designer purse constructed of old jean scraps, personalized with embroidery. Now graduated, Brooke is creating masterpieces and selling them to anxious buyers. Brooke is just one of many success stories. Students come through these classes, gaining the much needed skills, knowledge and tools necessary for success in the real world. Tristian Bastian with his completed block quilt. 14 BRILLION HIGH SCHOOL (From left to right: Alex Abts, Isaac Koehler, Haillee Fritsch, Avery Wenzel, Marissa Heraly, Boden Brooks, and Ariel Heraly.) Community Blood Drive On Thursday, at the Community Blood Center s annual high school conference in Appleton, BHS Student Council was awarded special recognition for last year s outstanding improvement in the number of blood units donated. Seven of our 2016/17 student council representatives attended the event to accept the award. Each year, student council coordinates two blood drives that are hosted at the high school. For each event, students work together to recruit donors, set up the donation site, and make sure everything runs smoothly throughout the day. At both of last year s drives, our student s leadership helped us to nearly double the goals we had set, earning us the Community Blood Center s award for most improvement from the previous year. We are proud to celebrate this achievement with them! Students Draft Countries in Global Studies Students in the 9th grade Global Studies class participated in the third annual BHS Country Draft to determine which country each student will focus on throughout the yearlong course. The draft order for the 88 participants was determined by the results of several activities, including geography trivia and relay competitions. The draft was held in the Endries Performing Arts Center, where each student had fifteen seconds to stake their claim. Seniors Evan Rice and Cole Lester announced the draft, and results were live-tweeted. Students will learn about their drafted country this year by looking at how larger concepts, such as economic systems and human rights, apply to that nation. The work will culminate in the international potluck in May, where students will showcase what they have learned about the country and its culture. 14

15 BRILLION HIGH SCHOOL Project Unify Project Unify has had a busy month in October; this year it is our goal to participate in more community events, and also have an opportunity to volunteer in our community. First this month, Project Unify GOT BUSTED, for supporting Special Olympics Wisconsin in Run with the Cops that was held October 5 on the UW Oshkosh campus. Run With The Cops brings law enforcement, Special Olympics Athletes and the community together for a fun-filled evening 5k. A special thank you to the Brillion Police Department for your donation to the runners for this event! Secondly, our volunteer opportunity happened on Oct. 29 at Polly s Pumpkin Patch, a local family owned business that attracts families from all over the Fox Valley area. Polly s Pumpkin Patch is known for their corn maze, pumpkins and a variety of games and activities the whole family can enjoy. We spent time picking pumpkins, washing pumpkins and picking up corn husks. We are hoping to unify not only our school, but also the community. 15
