Wow time definitely moves faster than we want it to. May is always a busy month, state testing, signing up for classes for next year, concerts, sporting events, and of course, graduation. For those of you who are parents of seniors, this graduation thing is becoming very real. Your student, the one whom you dressed and sent off to kindergarten, is now finishing up their last days at Berlin High School. While this is a very exciting time, it can also be a very scary time. Our big push, as a school, is to make sure our graduates are College and Career Ready by the time they leave our school. What that means is we work to insure that students have options when they graduate and the ability to choose whether to go to college, a trade school, to the military, or directly into the workforce. We fully realize that college is not the best, or only option, for students, but we want to make sure they have choices and options. We also want students to make informed decisions and to chase their dreams. Those dreams may range from becoming a car mechanic, to a carpenter, to an engineer or a doctor. To all the families who do not currently have a senior, encourage your student to get involved with their school community. Help them explore the options that are available to them after high school. Help them to see that the more they invest in themselves now, the greater the payoff will be when they leave Berlin High School as a high school graduate. 2 Page 2 BERLIN HIGH SCHOOL Athletic Director s As the School year winds down and sports season's start to hit their stride run, it is important to remind your children to take care of themselves by eating and drinking healthy and getting plenty of sleep. The month of May pulls student-athletes in many different directions and taking care of their mental/physical health has to be #1. As quickly as the school year comes to a close, we have to start the sports year. Here are a few key points/dates moving the calendar forward. Before a high school student is allowed to participate in school sports, the student must have a WIAA Physical (or alternate year) card, ImPACT Concussion Test (needed every other year), an Athletic Pledge/Insurance Waiver-Athletic Code Handbook Agreement, and Parent & Athlete Concussion Agreement signed and on file in the Berlin High School office. The last two forms should be completed through eregistration when registering for school. Students must turn in this information before the first day of practice. All forms are available on-line and at the Berlin High School office. Please call the BHS office at if you have any questions about this procedure. There will be a mandatory meeting for all Fall Athletes on Thursday, July 27th at 6 p.m. The school will be offering concussion testing following the meeting from 7-8 p.m. We will also be offering concussion testing on Tuesday, August 1st, from 7:30-10:30 a.m. at the high school. Come join the Parent Meeting with Mr. Mork on Tuesday, May 23, 2017, starting at 6:30 p.m., in Room A101, located off of the High School Commons. A time to discuss positives, concerns, or whatever, with Mr. Mork.

Page 3 Music Departments Present Spring Concerts Music for the Soul Spring Band Concert Monday, May 1, 2017 High School Auditorium 7:00 p.m. Both of the high school jazz ensembles will be performing works from Duke Ellington. Both groups will be showcasing great swing charts from the Ellington and Basie bands. Both concert ensembles will also be performing. We will be featuring classic works from Clifton Williams, John Barnes Chance, and David Maslanka. There will also be a percussion quintet piece that tributes the Anasazi people of the continental southwest. Ice cream sundaes will be available after the concert through the Berlin Music Boosters. The choirs at Berlin High School will present their spring concert Things Are Looking Up! on Monday, May 8 th. The concert portion starts at 7:00 p.m., with a slideshow of the music trip to New York City in April beginning around 6:40 p.m. The concert is free of charge. Following the concert, the Music Boosters will hold their annual Sundaes on Mondays ice cream social fundraiser. A large scoop of ice cream with your choice of assorted toppings will be $2.00 or two scoops for $3.00. All funds go to assist the music department activities such as music trips, equipment, honors activities, and the like. The theme for this concert revolves around things in the sky and beyond. The a cappella group Encore! will perform three songs: Stars featuring tuned water glasses and singing bowls, their contest piece Margot labourez les vignes, and Cells Planets. The Mixed Choir songs include Come Fly With Me, Castle on a Cloud and Blue Moon along with two others. They will do a little dancing for one song and make a rainstorm for another. The Concert Choir will perform five numbers including Music of The Night, The Rainbow Connection and Corner of the Sky. We will honor our graduating seniors and hear them sing the solo line as a group on Light of a Clear Blue Morning. This will be a fairly light concert. After our trip to New York and working so hard on those sacred pieces, I wanted to turn to more secular works that still have plenty of lessons to teach, says director Lisa Utecht. Please come and support our great kids and celebrate our graduating seniors! You will enjoy seeing pictures from our trip to New York and walk away humming a number of familiar tunes!

Page 5 Art Department Annual High School Art Show will take place for the entire month of May at the Berlin Public Library. In addition, there will be a variety of painted stools available for a donation of $40.00 to go towards future scholarships for students pursuing the arts in their higher education. Seniors don't forget to keep checking for scholarships. Scholarships are available on the Berlin Area School District Website, High School, Need to Know, Scholarship Information. Information can also be found in the Student Services office. Scholarship Information

Page 6 BERLIN HIGH SCHOOL Oceanography Students Expand Their Horizon High school Oceanography students have been learning about the world s oceans and its features. Within the past few weeks, students have taken advantage of several methods of learning, including a virtual field trip to experience how underwater research is conducted in a submersible. This experience allowed our students to experience something few human beings ever get the chance to do in real life (and without the risk of getting their feet wet!) Continuing their learning, these students also took a field trip to the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago, IL on April 19 to experience ocean life up close and personal. While that trip makes for a long day, the ability to see a living and healthy coral reef, and learn about how plants and animals live in the oceans is certainly worth that time! In addition to these experiences, these students got the rare opportunity to communicate with crew and scientists onboard the JOIDES Resolution. This international drilling ship is currently sailing in the South China Sea investigating seafloor spreading, a topic the students have learned about in class. Communicating via webcam, the class was given a tour of the ship and the laboratory. Several scientists took time out of their shift to explain the work they are doing, what life is like onboard a research ship for two months, and answer questions. Students will continue learning about the physical and biological aspects of the ocean, including several labs, an Amazing Race inspired activity, and a squid dissection, and will hopefully gain a better understanding of how the world s ocean influence not just coastal communities, but communities far away from the ocean such as Berlin.

Page 7 Raising the Bar The high school track and field program is requesting your help with purchasing a pole vaulting facility. Currently our program is unable to train, or enter, any athletes in the pole vaulting competitions. As a result our boys and girls teams must begin every away meet behind in points to the teams whose athletes place in the event. Also, with a pole vaulting facility we would be able to host major meets like regionals and sectionals. Finally, there is the potential for one of our athletes to earn a college scholarship should she or he be skilled enough in this event. The recent reconstruction of our track and football field has been a real plus for our athletic program, and the community. We would like to help complete our facility with the addition of a pole vaulting area. To help we are hoping you will consider contributing to this effort with a monetary donation. Our goal is to raise $20,000 in order to construct a runway, as well as buy a landing pit, standards, poles and crossbars. Any questions you may have can be addressed by coaches Matt Willett, Joe Stellmacher, Bob Prellwitz, and Kim Dehn. Contribution checks can be made out to Berlin High School, Raising the Bar Campaign. We thank you for your consideration and hope to hear from you soon. Matt Willett Joe Stellmacher Bob Prellwitz and Kim Dehn BHS Track and Field Coaches ( ) Still time to order your yearbook for $60.00! Orders can be placed at Jostens.com or in the High School office. Orders taken until sold out!
