Tuesday, January 13, 2015 Port Townsend High School Daily Bulletin THIS WEEK S SCHEDULE: Monday - Friday 6 period day No blocks and no Wednesday early release. GENERAL INFORMATION There is no early release this Wednesday, January 14. This means that we will be running a 6 period day all week long. And because there are no block days, everyone needs to stay on campus for lunch. RESCHEDULED!!! Financial Aid Night Thursday, January 15, 5:30 pm in the PTHS library. Learn about financing post-high school education! All students and their families are encouraged to attend. A Financial Aid Officer from Peninsula College will explain the FAFSA and the process involved in applying for federal aid. Applying for the scholarships using the WashBoard will also be explained. Interested in joining the Sailing Team? Please put your name and on the list at Jan s window in the Main Office. Last weekend to see THE NERD. Shows are Friday and Saturday at 7:00 pm in the auditorium. Come laugh yourself silly at this fund-raiser for the drama students trip to Ashland, Oregon and the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in June. Students pay only $5.00. Support the arts at PTHS! Winterfest Dance is being moved to January 31st to accommodate student athletes who are at sport tournaments on the 24th. The school is having problems with receiving s via the school website. If you need to your teachers, counselors, or any school staff, do not access their link through our school website. You should staff through your own browser (yahoo, gmail, whatever you use). We are working on the issue and hope to have it resolved soon. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is a day of remembrance for the great things Martin Luther King, Jr. has done. There are paper chains in the commons representing different races coming together as one. Each link represents a hand, and our chain reminds us that Dr. King joined hands with people of all colors when he marched for freedom. Since MLK spoke about service to others, there are also paper door hangers on each teacher s doorknob that remind us of what we are doing to be

2 of service to others. Don t forget to remember Martin Luther King, Jr. and all his accomplishments within our nation. Is your legal name showing up correctly in Skyward? If not, please stop by and see Jan in the Main Office. The High School Mountain Biking Season is about to begin. Both girls and boys are encouraged to join the Olympic Mountain Biking team. Practices are Wednesday and Sunday afternoons, and loaner bikes are available if you do not have one. Contact Team Manager Valerie Tweiten at (608) Interested in swimming? Join the Port Townsend Swim Team at any time. The team is co-ed, and practices are held at the Mountain View pool. The Jobs Corps provides campus housing, education and job placement at no cost to participants, ages A Job Corps representative will meet with interested Junior and Seniors on January 21, 7th period in the library. A complete listing of all current scholarships available are listing under the Counseling tab. American Legion Marvin G. Shields Memorial Post #26 Scholarship - This is a local scholarship for graduating senior students in East Jefferson County. The scholarship is available to students who are seeking a college degree and also to students who are seeking vocational training/certification. The members of the American Legion Marvin G. Shields Memorial Post #26 have three $1,000 scholarships available to help students pursue post-secondary education. An American Legion Marvin G. Shields Memorial Post #26 Scholarship packet is available in the counseling office regarding the application process; including eligibility, content of student application packet and the scholarship selection criteria. All applications must be received no later than April 10, 2015 and need to be mailed to American Legion Scholarship, c/o Nancy L. Mc Daniel, PO Box 275, Chimacum, WA

3 Elks Lodge Vocational Grant Award - The Port Townsend Elks Lodge #317 is now accepting applications for the Elks Lodge Vocational Grant Award from any eligible graduating Senior High School student and/or General Education student, who is a U.S. Citizen. The student must be receiving a diploma or certificate during the current program year and planning to pursue an eligible vocational/technical course of study. The grant award may be used for tuition, fees, books, and supplies at a community college or technical school. The grant award will be paid directly to the school the student is attending. The general application instructions for this grant award is available in the counseling office. The application packet needs to be dropped off at the Elks Lodge #317 at 555 Otto Street in Port Townsend, Wa The deadline for the application packet to be at the lodge is no later than the First Friday in March, March 6, Please contact the Elks Lodge at for specific application drop off times. The Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation provides scholarship for students whose parents served in the Marine Corps and were injured or killed in the line of duty or honorably discharged and meet income guidelines. Scholarships last year were awarded to more than 2,000 students. Since 1962, The Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation has never turned away an eligible applicant, having awarded more than 30,00 need-based scholarships valued at more than $80,000,000 to children of Marine and Navy corpsmen. Further information, eligibility requirements and the online application can be found at their website mcsf.org/apply/eligibility. The information regarding eligibility and timelines for the foundation scholarships can be found in the counseling office. The application process is now open online and closes March 3, Washington State Opportunity Scholarship - The Washington State Opportunity Scholarship supports low- and middle- income students pursuing eligible high-demand majors in science, technology, engineering, math (STEM) or health care and encourages recipients to work in Washington state once they complete their degrees. The scholarship sward amount ranges form $2,500-$7,500 depending on class standing. The scholarship is renewable up to five years based on credits completed. There will be over 700 new scholarship recipients selected for The application is now available online at collegesuccessfoundation.org/wa/home. The final deadline for submitting an application is Monday, March 2, 2015 at 5PM pst. Washington State Governor's Scholarship for Foster Youth - The Washington State Governor's Scholarship for Foster Youth is a scholarship program that helps young men and women from foster care continue their education and earn a college degree. Scholarship award amounts range from $2,00-$4,000 depending on the college of attendance with approximately 40 new scholarship receiving an award. The scholarship can be accessed for up to five years to complete an undergraduate study if they continue to meet eligibility requirements. The scholarship application is available online at collegesuccessfoundation.org/wa/home

4 and will be accepting application in January Check the website frequently The Passport to College Promise Scholarship - This scholarship program helps students from foster care prepare for and succeed in college. Through Passports, students receive a scholarship that assists with the cost of attending college, specialized support services from college staff and priority consideration for the State Need Grant and State Work Study program. The application form is available at collegesuccessfoundation.org/wa/home. Further details regarding eligibility criteria can be found at the website or in the counseling office. This application process is currently open with no currently listed closing date. Leadership 1000 Scholarship - The Leadership 1000 Scholarship is a scholarship program funded by individuals, foundations or businesses to provide college scholarships to students who will be attending an eligible four-year college or university in Washington state. A Leadership 1000 Scholarship can be customized around a general set of requirements requested by the donor. Scholarships awarded will range from $2,500- $5,000. The minimum application eligibility criteria is available online at collegesuccessfoundation.org/wa/home and in the counseling office. The online application will be opening during the month of January 2015 and available at the above website address. The webpage will also post the closing date, so please check the website frequently. The Costco Scholarship - The Costco scholarship Fund provides financial assistance to highly qualifies underrepresented minority students who wish to attend Seattle University of the University of Washington. Students are considered for the Costco Scholarship as part of the normal financial aid process at each of the two universities. To learn more about the specific application procedures for the Costco Scholarship please contact the Office of Student Financial Services at the University of Washington or at Seattle University. Additional information is also available on the website of each school. The Costco Scholarship at the U of W is part of the Diversity Scholarship Program. The Seattle University has a specific webpage regarding the Costco Scholarship. The collegesuccessfoundation.org/wa/home also contains much of this information. SPORTS NEWS GIRL POWER! Girls-only weightroom training is from 5:15 pm 6:15 pm in the PTHS weightroom on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Winter Conditioning runs for spring will meet every Monday, Tuesday and Thursday at the Gael Stuart Building at 3 PM. See Ryan Clarke or Mark Streett with questions. All are welcome!
