Campus Middle School General Information School Year SUMMER READING Studies have been done which show that summer reading programs enhance student achievement! Please click here for the CMS summer reading list for all grades. ORIENTATION DAY FOR SIXTH and NEW SEVENTH and EIGHTH GRADERS Sixth Grade and New Student Orientation will be held on Friday, August 16, New this year, bus transportation will be provided for sixth grade students only. At 8:45 a.m., the students will be escorted to the Gym to meet their Campus Crew Buddies for a morning of team-building activities until noon. During this time, parents are welcome to purchase team-requested supplies from the CMS School Store. The store will be open from 8:45 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Orientation Day. At 9:00 a.m., new 7 th and 8 th grade students are to meet in the Cafeteria to pick up their class schedules. Students and their parents are then invited to visit the students classrooms to meet their team of teachers. Campus Ambassadors will be available to take parents on building tours. Students should be done by 9:45 a.m. STUDENT SCHEDULES Student schedules can be picked up on Friday, August 16, 2013 in the cafeteria at the following times: 6th grade 8:30 a.m. New 7 th and 8 th grade students 9:00 a.m. Returning 7 th and 8 th grade students 1 p.m. - 6 p.m. FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL - AUGUST 19 School Hours: 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. All 6 th, 7 th and 8 th grade students begin school on Monday, August 19, at 8:00 a.m. This will be a full day of school for all CMS students. Students will only need paper and a pen or pencil on the first day. Each student will receive information concerning team supply requirements when they pick up their schedules. We encourage students to purchase school supplies through our Parent-Teacher Organization s school store. SCHOOL CALENDAR Please click here to view and print our school calendar. Page 1

ACTIVITY FEE Why pay the optional $10 activity fee? Great Question! Many people do not know how this money is used and how it benefits our students. The optional activity fee provides support to ALL student activities, from athletics to extracurricular clubs and events. In some cases, this money is the only form of funding for a student club. Campus has many clubs and activities in which students may join and become involved. We appreciate your support! ATHLETIC PARTICIPATION Athletics and activities are described in the Student Handbook, which will be distributed during the first week of school. Additionally, each sport s season will be published in the Mustang Messenger, the CMS monthly newsletter. Students should also listen to daily announcements for information about the first day of practice. Students will receive emergency cards and fee information on the first day of practice. Physical forms with doctors signatures are not required in order for students to participate in any sport at Campus. ATTENDANCE Your child s regular attendance is essential for success! If it is necessary for a student to be absent, parents should follow the guidelines in the Student/Parent Handbook. Please call the attendance line at to report the absence. Calling before 9:00 a.m. is preferred. When your student returns to school, please send a note, which includes a parent/guardian signature explaining the absence. The note needs to be delivered by the student to the Main Office. This note is an important part of your child s attendance record. BACK-TO-SCHOOL NIGHTS Back-to-School Nights will be held on three separate evenings. Please mark your calendars with the following dates: BUS TRANSPORTATION Sixth Grade August 21, :00 7:30 p.m. Seventh Grade August 22, :00 7:30 p.m. Eighth Grade August 28, :00 7:30 p.m. In August, the Transportation Department will mail a bus schedule to your home unless you are within walking distance of the school. Bus pick-up times and bus stops will be indicated on this schedule. If you have any questions about bus transportation, please call The after-school activity bus will run Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday afternoons, leaving CMS at 4:10 p.m. Supervision of students does not extend beyond 4:15 p.m., so please be sure your child is picked up by that time. Students must have a pass from a staff member to ride an activity bus. All students must show their school I.D. card in order to ride any middle school bus. Page 2

LOCKERS (Hall) Students will receive an assigned hall locker at check-in. Lockers are pre-assigned after enrollment numbers are finalized and before check-in begins. Arriving at check-in before the assigned time will not affect locker assignment. Once a locker is assigned, the student is responsible for contents inside his/her locker. LOCKS (Hall) As in previous years and for security purposes, student locks must be purchased at Campus Middle School. These locks will be available for purchase at check-in and can be used every year while a student is at CMS. However, students must bring their previously purchased CMS lock to check-in and show it to the staff at the Locker Assignment table. No locker assignment will be given until a lock is purchased or a valid previously purchased CMS lock is shown to the Deans Office staff. Parents are asked to emphasize to their child that sharing a locker combination with other students reduces locker security. LOCKERS (Gym) Students will be assigned a gym locker for P.E. when classes start; thus, students will need a combination lock for their gym locker. Locks must be purchased through CMS and can be purchased during check-in or from their P.E. teacher when class starts. LUNCH/BREAKFAST Lunch periods are 30 minutes long and are scheduled by grade level (6 th, 7 th and 8 th ) between 10:25 a.m. and 12:50 p.m. Students may bring a sack lunch from home or buy a lunch in our cafeteria. A full lunch is $2.70 and includes milk and/or juice. Breakfast is $1.50 and is served at 7:30 a.m. Computerized meal credits may be purchased at check-in. Please click here for more information about CCSD Food Services. FITNESS FESTIVAL Please join us on Saturday, September 7, 2013 for the First American State Bank s Fitness Festival! The festivities will kick off at 7:30 a.m. in Crescent Park (Belleview and DTC Boulevard) with registration and a silent auction. The 5k run/walk will be followed by the best after party in the nation, which includes free food and beverages from local restaurants! Family and community participation is encouraged as a means of showing support for our young people. Please click here for registration information. MAGAZINE SALES Our magazine sale is a significant fundraiser for CMS. If you, family, or friends would like to renew subscriptions, order new magazines, or purchase magazines as gifts, please wait until the CMS magazine sale! Your subscriptions do not cost you more; the publisher simply provides a large percentage of the profits to the school. Please click here for more PTO information. Page 3

NEW STUDENT SUMMER REGISTRATION DATES New students to the district who will attend CMS and have NOT registered for classes are asked to come on either August 8 or August 12 at 9:00 a.m. to complete summer registration and testing. During this time, students will meet with counselors, select elective classes, and complete placement testing. Parents can anticipate two hours to complete the process, but more or less time may be required depending on how quickly each student takes to complete his or her test. Parents are asked to bring their School Assignment Form that they received upon enrollment at District Admissions and their child s most recent report card with them. PARENT TEACHER ORGANIZATION (PTO) Parents are automatically members of the CMS Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) and are encouraged to become actively involved. The purpose of the CMS PTO is as follows: to promote the welfare of the children of CMS; to promote effective communication and understanding among the parents, teachers and school staff; to promote parent-teacher cooperation in the education of children; and to promote support of the school and the Cherry Creek School District Community. PTO members support CMS through the CMS School Store and the Back-To-School Supply Sale, the annual Magazine Sale, teacher and staff appreciation, and through many other activities and roles. Volunteer opportunities are explained on the Directory Information Form included in this packet. PTO meetings are held monthly at CMS. Please watch for PTO Meeting announcements in TWAC (This Week at Campus), a weekly blast sent to you from the PTO. Please click here for more PTO information. POWERSCHOOL PowerSchool is a web-based Student Information System (SIS), which provides real-time information to school administrators, teachers, parents, and students. Parents can check their child s attendance and grade history by logging in to PowerSchool via the internet; using their unique parent User ID and Password. They can also view the school bulletin, fee balance information (when available), and read notes and comments from teachers. User ID and passwords will be distributed at check-in for 6th graders and new students to CCSD. Note: Please contact the school if you have questions or concerns regarding internet accessibility. We will be happy to assist you! SCHOOL INSURANCE (VOLUNTARY) Student Accident Coverage is available to all middle school students. Please click here for more information on the voluntary student accident insurance. (As in the past, parents will mail enrollment forms and premium payments directly to the insuring company.) Nothing is more important than a child s health. It can play a big part in their ability to learn and the Cherry Creek School District wants to see a healthy child in every seat. Please click here for more information on CHP+ health insurance. SCHOOL PICTURES Pictures for all three grade levels will be taken during check-in. Please click here for the picture order form and pricing. Checks should be made out to Van Gogh and paid to the photographer when the student s picture is taken. Even if students do not order a picture package, a picture needs to be taken during check-in for the Student ID. Please be sure that picture attire conforms to dress code. Page 4

SCHOOL SUPPLIES/CMS STORE Students will receive complete lists of required supplies (calculator details, notebook sizes and types, etc.) when they pick up their schedule. This year, families can purchase supply bundles at check-in. The ordered bundles will be available to pickup, along with class schedules, on August 16. The CMS PTO sponsors a "Back-to-School Supply Sale", at which time your student will be able to buy most of his/her needed supplies. Friday, August 16 8:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. (6 th Grade & New Students) 1:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. (All Students) * Locker Access ends at 6:30 p.m. Monday, August 19 7:15 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. (All Students) Make your Back-to-School shopping easy and purchase your supplies at great prices while supporting CMS! STUDENT/PARENT HANDBOOK During the first week of school, students will receive a handbook with school rules and procedures. Social Studies teachers will read and review the handbook with students. We request that parents also read the rules/procedures and sign and return the signature page from the handbook. The signatures confirm that both parents and students fully understand all expectations. Students must return the signed signature page to their homeroom teacher by Friday, August 30. We have found that this homework assignment helps students understand the school s expectations and the school year progresses more smoothly. STUDENT I.D. CARDS Students will receive their I.D. Cards at check-in. Cards must be presented in order to ride school buses and check out books, magazines or on-line information from the library. It is important that students keep their I.D. card with them while at school for these purposes. Lost cards can be reissued for a $5 fee. Page 5
