WEDNESDAY NIGHT MOVIE: MAIGRET Our summer series of reruns of the French TV detective stories will present episode 28 this week, "Maigret versus Mr. Cavre". At the request of a friend of his boss, Maigret is unofficially sent to Belgium to dig out the explanation of the recent suicide of a young man. Maigret has no police authority in Belgium, but using his investigating techniques, he eventually discovers the truth of what happened. The Mr. Cavre of the title (the man in the black hat!) tries to negate Maigret's effort. Wednesday, July 18, 7:15 p.m. in the Auditorium. 1997, 89 minutes, in French with English subtitles. No violence. MID-SUMMER RAFFLE Plans for the 2018 MIDSUMMER RAFFLE, July 28-August 5, are nearing completion. The selection of raffle items has been expanded, and residents are continuing to volunteer for ticket sales during the event. As in past years, all raffle proceeds will go directly to the Goodwin House Foundation for the Fellowship Fund, a confidential program that provides funds so that no resident has to leave a Goodwin House Community. Funds are held in the Foundation earmarked for Fellowship use. The program is individualized to each resident s needs. Successful GHBC raffles held during the past two years have added a significant amount to the Fund. Let s make this the best year ever! COMMUNITY CORNER Well, it s that time of the year again. It seems, no matter what the age group, people look at July and August as months in which to plan vacations. It is true that, in January and February, thoughts of trips South easily come to mind, but right now thoughts of many options for get-away spots occupy some spare time. Lake cottages attract; the sound of ocean waves beckon; thoughts of spending time with family in old familiar places come to mind. If we find our plans revolving around staying at GHBC for the summer, we have some beautiful patios. One, outside of the Board Room, has a nice size grill for residents use. The Bistro Patio has tables with shady green umbrellas providing an enjoyable environment for eating outdoors. After selecting from a wide variety of choices on the Bistro menu, the food is brought to your table just like on a cruise! They may not be the Kew Gardens, but if you stroll out to the Knoll Garden, you can enjoy some beautiful trees, bushes, flowers, and a bunny or two. The benches aren t on wheels but they do provide comfortable seating. You can always take a bottle of wine out to the Atrium Patio and pretend you are in Tuscany. Take a swim in the pool; go bike riding; row a boat (a machine that looks and feels like a boat); and run at the speed of your choice. You can borrow some Nordic Walking poles from the Fitness Center and ski down the halls while yodeling, and pretend you are practicing for the winter Olympics in the Alps. Or, you could stock the empty kitchen cabinet with popcorn and go to a movie in the Media Room, the Auditorium, or your own living room/den. Who needs a get-away? Dottie Moser, Resident

My name is Justina Kumar, and I recently graduated from George Mason University with a Bachelor's Degree in Health Administration. I am currently an intern at Goodwin House Bailey s Crossroads working with your Executive Director, Justin Carwile. I am having an amazing time and learning a huge amount of new things every day. One thing that stood out to me here is, how residents appreciate the staff members that help them out daily. To complete my internship here at Goodwin House, I have designed the You Got Caught Caring program. My project focuses on how we appreciate the staff who help residents. We want them to know that their hard work is paying off, and that we enjoy the time they take to go above and beyond. Please fill out a comment form on an employee that comes to your attention that stood out to you while caring for you and that you appreciate! An employee that goes above and beyond. You may keep your comments anonymous by leaving Name of Person submitting notice blank. There will be two locations where the comment forms and white/gray drop boxes will be, one in the main Resident Business Office and second one in the Resident mailroom. Please have all forms submitted by Thursday, August 2. I will compile a list based on your comments and would like to distribute my findings to staff and residents. The positive attitude the staff has towards the resident deserves to be recognized, so let s acknowledge them and their hard work. Thank You, Justina.
