Fireside Schedule The Fireside will be closed on the following Sundays: May 20, May 27, June 3, June 10, June 17. Fireside will reopen for Sundays on June 24. GREAT DECISIONS SERIES: U.S. GLOBAL ENGAGEMENT AND THE MILITARY A Great Decisions discussion will be held in the Auditorium on Thursday, May 24, at 3:30 p.m., dealing with U.S. Global Engagement and the Military. Since the end of World War II in 1945, the U.S. has positioned itself as the leader of the international order, the country responsible for global safety and economic security. The U.S. economy has been seen as the strongest in the world. Its democratic and free market values have been described as a model, worthy of global emulation, and its power and preeminence have been underwritten by the possession of the world s most powerful military. Today, a fundamental rebalancing of the global order is under way. In the face of major shifts in the distribution of power and clear challenges to its supremacy, the U.S. s global leadership is in doubt. Economic shifts, the erosion of the democratic/free market model, and the rebalancing of power -- including military power among nations pose major dilemmas for U.S. policy makers and the public. A Great Decisions video will review ongoing changes in the geopolitical, economic, social, political, and military environment that are contributing to potential rebalancing. Following the video, resident Jean Reed will facilitate a discussion of issues raised in the video, and what might declining U.S. soft power (diplomacy) and foreign aid and increasing hard power (military size and strength) mean for the global balance of power and the protection of U.S. interests. Please join us! MEMORIAL DAY OBSERVANCE On Wednesday, May 30, in the Auditorium at 3:00 p.m., we will be remembering all Veterans and deceased Resident Veterans of Goodwin House Bailey s Crossroads who passed away in the last year.

GHBC RESIDENT WIRELESS NETWORK UPDATE It has been a little over a month since we turned on the new wireless network at GHBC. There have been many different devices successfully connected. (Smart TVs, DVD players, Smart phones, Apple TVs, Amazon Firesticks, Amazon Echoes and Dots, caption phones, tablets, Kindles, and of course Mac and Windows computers). Many of you connected yourself. Many had help from family or other residents. Several were surprised how easy it was. Many have contacted GHI Information Technology for help. A few GHI IT even had trouble with. One computer was just too old to work with the new technology. As I am composing this, with the exception of the old computer, we have successfully connected everything we have tried. If you still have a device that accesses the internet using the GHBC_Resident wireless network. we need you to switch. If it is a computer or smart phone, you should be able to do it yourself. If it is something else, you will likely need our help. Please contact the GHI IT Help Desk at ext and leave a message so we can put you on our list to help you get set up. As soon as we don t have anyone on our list, and it is very short now we will start shutting the old access points off so if you have not already switched over we need you to call Ext.7252 so we can get you on the list and help you out. The deadline for the next issue of West Winds is Tuesday, May 15. Submit all articles by 12 noon via at westwinds@goodwinhouse.org

If you have any interest in abandoned and little known airports, you may already be aware of the, now nonexistent, Crossroads Airport, later known as the Washington-Virginia Airport, located in Bailey s Crossroads. In 1941, E.C. Germain submitted an application to locate an airport here under the name of Crossroads Airport. It was planned to be 150 acres. In 1942 a license was granted. However, the wartime shortages of construction materials meant that the opening of the airport would have to wait until the end of WWII. The Bern brothers bought the land in In 1947 an application to build and operate the airport was granted. It was up and running by the end of the year offering fuel, repairs, hangers, tie-downs, charters and a flight school welcoming ex- GIs to the flying world. One of the trainees recalled that two initial solo flights were required...one on the long runway and one over the drive-in theater screen. The runway was so narrow that landing in the grass on the side was acceptable. Most of the turf surrounding the two runways was rough, with rabbit holes. Power lines and encroaching buildings soon led to substandard approaches. Nevertheless, its incredibly convenient location led to its becoming one of the most active airports in the DC area. Demonstrations of various aircrafts were performed for officials from the Pentagon. By 1960, well over 100 aircraft were based at this airport. In 1966, the state provided $22,000 to relocate the east/west runway as planes could barely clear Route 7 when landing. (One plane accidently landed in the Toys R Us parking lot!)
